Re: EBF White Collar boxing semi pro whats it all about?
I have been to a few unlicensed shows under the IBA banner in and around the South East.
90% of the fights were mismatches. Ex-pro's knocking over "imports" in front of their mates.
Not for me.

Interestingly enough, the ABA are mulling over the possibility of introducing a masters division next season thus giving folk a chance of boxing as amateurs, albeit at a level where it's strictly controlled. I suspect this means you wouldn't be able to box seniors, only in the masters division. The ABA said an announcement is expected in August.

Ah, thats good to hear! Boxing of all sports has shown that age isn't that much of a barrier if you are fit and have ability - 34 years old is no kind of cut off point anyway - if they are going to make cut off points why not 45? (if at all) The Scottish promoter Alex Morrison won a Scottish ABA super heavyweight title at the age of 44!Boxingmad wrote:Interestingly enough, the ABA are mulling over the possibility of introducing a masters division next season thus giving folk a chance of boxing as amateurs, albeit at a level where it's strictly controlled. I disagree with your attitude on this - so what if some of the lads think they are mega stars - it isnt doing anyone any harm - my disagreement with the EBF at present is the consistency of the rules and regs throughout all of its shows:the truth wrote:exactley smigga, well said, bunch of pretenders telling ppl they re pros the maj of emSmigga wrote:I don't want to get in a debate about it mate, It's your livelyhood and good luck to you. Strict weigh in checks
Strict medical rules
If the above 2 are strictly enforced which at the moment is open for debate - then I see no reason why 2 consenting adults if they want a fight - and the rules are adhered to then lets get it on.
Its better than using weapons and sh*t like that - I have seen a couple of feuds settled through the EBF and I think its a good thing - but they really do need to tighten up on the rules before something horrible happens - I dread that day!!!

Spud , only just come onto here as i was out at the aba's yesterday so didnt come online , so in with regards to you saying weigh ins being done is bollox , i have always done weigh ins on my show , and always will . i cant answer for the ebf as i have no dealing with them , but i know the wcbc , who are getting quite bid down on the south coast area , do weigh ins the day before like the pros , they seem a real good outfit , maybe worth you checking them out and a few others maybe rather than just assuming that white collar promotors dont do weigh ins because youve been to some ebf shows that havent , incidently which ebf are you talking about ? , English Boxing federation or European Boxing federation ? only ask as ive never been to an english but the european (basically the midlands right up to manchester and newcastle) , i have put guys on their cards as opponents and always found them to be put together well with proper weigh ins and insurance etc , although some of the judging on their main event fights can be a bit dubious .
regardless of anyones views on white collar , i like to think i do it as legit as poss , with weigh ins , closely matched (on paper ) bouts , of course that doesnt always mean that there close in the ring as it only takes one good punch to score a ko , i do a ranking system so that people can get title fights , and not fight someone whos not close enough ranked for them , a beginner will only ever fight a fellow beginner , with a record no better than 0-2 , i keep records of all fights , medicals , weights , etc , i use 14oz gloves for super middle weight and upwards , 12 oz for everyone else , and i offer good pay , possibly the best in the country as far as ticket deals , and competitive on pay for away fighters .
sometimes things go wrong that make it not such a good show or whatever , but im doing it , as a boxing fan , so in my opinion i do things how most people think they should be done , agreed theres no brain scans , but i think steps are being taken for the bigger promotors to start doing them , and then maybe it will pass on to the rest of us .
we can make things as safe as possible but the scans need to come eventually as it only takes one concussive punch to do some damage no matter how safe we do things.

Damian,
Like many others on here I love boxing - if I was honest I love seeing a good scrap and will go almost anywhere to see one - although only the other week saw a particular vicious one between 2 women who were literally tearing each others hair out
However lets be serious here - Yep all the various White Collar bodies have a future - absolutely definitely!! - I say this because virtually every single show that is put on up and down the country is making money or at the very least is breaking even - the venues are full and whether people like it or not thats more than can be said for a lot of professional shows - most "fight" fans want to see a fight - they want to see 2 people get in a ring and leather each other - thats basically the top and bottom of things.
However - even though I am stating "White Collar" or whatever else you want to call it has a future - in my honest opinion its treading a very very dangerous line - something hideous is going to happen - because there is DEFINITELY NOT any consistency throughout the various bodies concerning "weigh ins" and medicals - I am sorry Damian - but somewhere someone along the line is going to get hurt and then someone is going to be ruined financially because they will be sued and then regulation on white collar will be forced through as a matter of law.
Damian - the longer the various "white collar" bodies splinter and dream up the names of their various governing bodies which number more than professional boxer - the more regulation is going to be difficult to introduce - until something terrible happens - everyone will continue to be in denial and then BANG - the "do gooder" brigade will come out and state "told you so" and then the crys of stop boxing will increase further.
Whilst I think this world we live in has gone politcally correct and health safety mad and it drives me nuts - I honestly believe there has to be consistency with regards to safety in all areas of boxing whether that be professional, semi professional, white colllar etc etc etc.

agreed mate , if the aba or the board or someone said , look were going to govern this , all white collar promotors have to be aligned to us and make sure safety is paramount etc etc , id be all for it , as long is didnt cause me to cease trading , so to speak . but unfortunately theres a lot in the white collar scene who want to be the top dog hence all the various organisations .Spud wrote:Damian,

Being in the white collar scene really opens your eyes to how murky the world of boxing is , im sure theres some really dodgy characters in the pros , but in white collar it would only be the one with the most clout in the underground world that would prevail as the main authority unless the main bodies embraced it rather than frowned upon it , but we all know thats not going to happen , theyd rather let someone get hurt and like you said , have the anti boxing brigade in force than try to help it become a safer place , im sure many promotors , myself included could do a sufficent job in the pros to be profitable , IF things were done slightly differently , but the fact remains that those things are in place for a reason , mainly to protect fighters from things such as injury or being ripped off , so this means white collar organisations would always exist , if it was criminalised then it would be worse as it would mean bouts taking place underground , then it really would be like snatch , nobody wants that , so the big bodies no they either should embrace us or not bother us at all .
Its a shame as theres probably some fighters and promotors that could be assets to the board , but like i said things like that will just never ever happen . Id be all for change , if it helped me rather than hindered me .
Re: EBF White Collar boxing semi pro whats it all about?
I know this is a bit late in the thread, I searched something and saw it and was thoroughly intrigued reading the posts. One thing i would suggest though, with regards to white collar is that the weigh in should be done on the morning or night before. The reason i say this is because without head guards, then the brain is susceptible to a little more damage. granted, headguards don't do a great deal but i think it would be safer if this was done and ensures no one is dehydrated as that is when injury occurs.

I'm not taking the piss here but I think booze has a fair roll to play in making the 'White coller' shows more attractive, to the paying punter I mean! how many of the 'boxers' friends would go and watch their mate if he was on a pro show that you couldn't drink at? not as many I'd guess! York hall is a perfect example of what I'm talking about, the stupid screen they put infront of the bar area to stop people watching whilst they have a swift pint!! the pro game would 100% benefit from allowing booze to be consumed during fights at your seat. IMHO.
Re: EBF White Collar boxing semi pro whats it all about?
Totally agree I missed the only k.o of the night at one York Hall show. It was a nice bonus at the recent wembley Arena bill though. And when it comes to leisure centres is there some law? Because I've never had a beer at a leisure centre watching boxing.frankgreaves wrote:I'm not taking the piss here but I think booze has a fair roll to play in making the 'White coller' shows more attractive, to the paying punter I mean! how many of the 'boxers' friends would go and watch their mate if he was on a pro show that you couldn't drink at? not as many I'd guess! Its a recent thing that people have been allowed to drink in the arena, i dont even know if it is officially allowed. The O2 let people for the DeGale-Groves show and there was a much better atmosphere than almost any MEN show!yid14 wrote:Totally agree I missed the only k.o of the night at one York Hall show. thing about headguards from my own readings is that theyl stop the instant impact a little for a big punch but for the continous amounts of punches over a fight they dont make a huge difference .kamicazze wrote:I know this is a bit late in the thread, I searched something and saw it and was thoroughly intrigued reading the posts. a semi pro/white collar boxer has far less impact on is brain than a pro i general as pro's fight over a longer distance , take more punches and drain down to make weight , wheras on a show like mine it only 3 round ( 4 for title fights) only 2mins long , theyre not going to be taking the same level of punches that a pro takes (as lets face it theyre pro because thats what theyre good at doing , theyre more accurate and maybe hit harder and faster )
Re: EBF White Collar boxing semi pro whats it all about?
Thats a fair point. It was just a point that maybe in the likelihood you get someone draining to make weight then they have sufficient time to rehydratedamianhucker1 wrote:thing about headguards from my own readings is that theyl stop the instant impact a little for a big punch but for the continous amounts of punches over a fight they dont make a huge difference .kamicazze wrote:I know this is a bit late in the thread, I searched something and saw it and was thoroughly intrigued reading the posts. Interesting thread!
I've actually got my first fight on a white collar show, here in Cardiff on the 11th November. I'm 37 and this is my only chance to do something that I've wanted to do all my life but for one reason or another been unable too.
I'll be wearing a headguard and 16oz gloves over three 2 minute rounds, and I cant bloody wait !!

Looks like he came back on the white collar/unlicensed circuit.
Last year a similar article came out in these parts, at least this piece actually states it's inlicensed.

Defo unlicensed as he won an EBF title, a poor one at that.
BBC dropped the ball here. They should have pointed out it wasn't proper pro boxing.
It's like if we created a football league and got 11 70-year-olds to turn out and they won the league, we could say they are the oldest football champions. It wouldn't mean they have any credibility.

Puzzles me this steve ward story , i know his promotor so can only credit it as good promotional work but how on earth is he in the guiness book of records as the oldest competitive boxer , he holds the english ebf cruiserweight title , my cruiserweight champion would smash him but his promotor would never put it on my show nor would i want it to be an ebf show , hes supposedly challenging for the ebf british title vs sarg in october , i really cant se him winning , i even volounteered to fight steve myself on a show i did jointly with 2 other promotors in mansfield when id not been promoting long as they were struggling to match him up , i turned up on the day to find another guy had pulled out so they just threw the 2 lads together instead
