Gerry Cooney vs. Earnie Shavers (fantasy matchup)

Post by Grimm »

Who would win this matchup, 2 fighters that alot of people considered the hardest hitters of all time.

Both one handed punchers with glass chins, whoever wins would definitely win by knockout.

Prime v prime I see Earnie taking Cooney out early. Interestingly their primes weren't all that far apart either, Shavers being most effective in his mid-thirties in around 1977-79 and Cooney being at his best around 1980-82. I don't know how close the fight ever was to being made, Gerry was mopping up the remnants of the 1970's HW bunch in 1980 and 81, but Earnie wasn't quite as past it as Lyle and Norton so maybe was considered too dangerous.

Good matchup.

I would go for Gerry Cooney, but I can't say with complete confidence.

It's a true 'fence sitters' fight!!!! :TU:

It would seem to me that Shavers would have had about the same luck Foreman had. He put Ken Norton Away pretty easy. Ron Lyle got to him thopugh so did Jerry Quarry , overall I'd give Shavers the insided track on getting to Cooney before Cooney got to him.
