Paul Weir nearly got his shot in Las Vegas against Michael Carbajal. I see Burns standing as much as chance agaiunst Broner as Weir did against Carbajal. Good on him for going to America to fight him though.

I don't think there is any comparison between Paul Weir and Ricky Burns apart from them being Scottish and WBO title holders. In terms of ability in the ring, Ricky is streets ahead of him!
By the same token, I believe Carbajal was far better than Broner is at this stage of his career.

Is calling Burns a domestic/euro operator really that outlandish considering he's been beaten conclusively at both levels?GAV wrote:So winning a world title against the guy rated #1 or #2 in your division is an easy way to a title. Yep that makes perfect sense. So does now being rated #2 or #3 in the world yourself but just being a domestic operator.charlieb wrote:For me, Burns is a domestic operator, Euro at best. You couldn't have asked for an easier route to world honours than Martinez
Martinez was seen as someone that Burns had no chance against by the majority. It was all "fair play to Ricky for taking his last chance at a world title, but he won't win" Well look how that theory worked out!!
While they are terrific fighters, I for one would have more respect for people like Calzaghe if they had been more prepared to go after the bigger challeneges out there. I am a huge JC fan, but he will never be forgiven for not going to Germany, smashing up Sven Ottke. It would have made everyone see that Ottke was not #1 and would of also wiped away that L=0 column that the judges in Germany were so reluctant to take from Ottke's record.
Does holding a world title automatically make you world class when the man you took the belt from hadn't actually faced a world class opponent himself? I don't think it does, personally. I think superfeather's a bit of a no man's land sandwiched between 2 much deeper divisions. Martinez looked positively awful against Cook right up until he caught him with that uppercut. I gave Burns a good chance of outworking him at the time and I think he did himself proud.
Beating Martinez is a massive achievement, but it's still a case of levels for me, someone like Luevano would've beaten Martinez, Burns and Broner comfortably and there's a level or 2 above him, luckily not at superfeather right now.

To call Ricky a domestic operator i a insult, then you contradict yourself by saying beating Martinez was good. Honestly mate your fornicating clueless sorry.charlieb wrote:Is calling Burns a domestic/euro operator really that outlandish considering he's been beaten conclusively at both levels?GAV wrote:So winning a world title against the guy rated #1 or #2 in your division is an easy way to a title. I'm not sold on Broner.
He looked good against Jason Litzau, yes, but let's not forget he looked dreadful in his fight before that (vs. Ponce De Leon).
None of the other wins on his record especially noteworthy.
In terms of merit, Burns should be the favorite here, but he will have to be on absolute top form on beat Broner in Cincinnati.

No contradiction, I didn't say Martinez was good, I said beating him was a massive achievement, for Burns.billy nelson wrote:To call Ricky a domestic operator i a insult, then you contradict yourself by saying beating Martinez was good. Re: Am Finding It Pretty Hard To See Burns Beating Broner!
i'm not sure I've seen it that way Billy, Broners speed when he lets his hands go has been mightily impressive, whereas Ricky to me has been more efficient and shown a great engine, but there's no doubt you know your fighter a lot lot better than I ever could.billy nelson wrote:Apart from the left hook of Broners Rickys quicker throwns more shots and a better selection of punches imogoldenears wrote:If Ricky wins this it will really be a creditworthy victory. It's a massive challenge in every way, I don't see him having the speed to cope with Broner but I hope he proves me wrong. i think Martinez was an incredible victory and he will need to be at least on that level to have a chance in this one IMHO
But I've seen Ricky a number of times and seen Broner in action a few and it seems like the toughest fight out there at the moment, not only in that Broner has an enormous amount of momentum on his side, and Ricky's last 3 opponents haven't been on this level. I'm one of those who thinks the Martinez victory WAS a fantastic achievement and didn't believe he had any chance on the night, but ended up jumping around the room the longer the fight went on. I hope he does the same again - he's a top lad.
good luck to both of you.

I really see Burns beating him, Broner isn't fundamentally that special he's quick and hits hard but his chin comes up when he throws and under pressure he isn't as good. Burns should keep the pressure on behind a strong jab and then let go with combinations. Definetly a winnable fight for Ricky
