Gavin Rees v Derry Mathews Oct 1st
Gavin Rees v Derry Mathews Oct 1st
Ive got my ringside tickets! Should be a cracking fight, hope Gavin can win this one at Newport centre. How do people think this one will pan out?
Re: Gavin Rees v Derry Mathews Oct 1st
Gavin Rees is a very good strong little fighter who has proved his ability time and time again, was ringside for his last good win against Andrew Murray in Cardiff.
I think that with hometown advantage again he will prove to be slightly more determined than Matthews and get home again by clear unanimous decision.

I see a points win for Rees on this one.

Re: Gavin Rees v Derry Mathews Oct 1st
If Derry can survive through the first 5 rds i think he's got a helluva chance. Gavin Rees always seems to drop completely off his game second half of the fight through til rd 11/12 and Derry definitely has the power and skill levels to punish that. Still cant figure out wether it's a stamina issue with Rees or a concentration one.
Head says Rees on a very tight decision
Heart Says Derry stoppage anywhere between 6 & 9.
going for the bottom one obviously!!!

if Mbaye couldnt stop him and he soaked up a lot from Kotelnik I cant see derry doing itfuntime wrote:If Derry can survive through the first 5 rds i think he's got a helluva chance. Yeah, I think it's a fight that will go to a decision. To my shame, I haven't really seen enough of Mathews to decide a winner, but it would be hard to overcome Rees' energy and work rate.
Re: Gavin Rees v Derry Mathews Oct 1st
Spitting image of the Murray fight for me. Rees builds up a decent points lead. Then pretty even over the last 6 Rees UD.
Re: Gavin Rees v Derry Mathews Oct 1st
mathews ud
Re: Gavin Rees v Derry Mathews Oct 1st
I really like the styles and attitudes of both guys so either way i'll be happy with the winner of this

i dont see wot derrys done since coming back to make any1 think he can even live with rees. he beat choi over 3 rounds ffs, would prob have got stopped if it had gone another 2. beat a novice fighter last time.
I know it sounds harsh cos it took bottle coming back and he seems a sound bloke, posting on here n'all, but lets look at the facts.
whilst look who rees has been fighting. Watson, Murray.. winning the prize fighter at LW vs some good names as well.

Re: Gavin Rees v Derry Mathews Oct 1st
If Derry survives the early onslaught i think he could take Rees the distance but i'd still favour Rees to win. Could be a belter.
Re: Gavin Rees v Derry Mathews Oct 1st
Can't believe them odds, having a bit of 4/1 on derry.
Re: Gavin Rees v Derry Mathews Oct 1st
Love watching Rees - quality boxer.
Re: Gavin Rees v Derry Mathews Oct 1st
Mathews deserves huge credit for the way he's turned his career around, but as has been mentioned earlier, this is a whole different proposition. Rees wins by wide points or stoppage for me.
Re: Gavin Rees v Derry Mathews Oct 1st
can't help thinking it should be someone like mitchell, crolla or murray fighting for this title.
rees seems to be a liability in terms of injuries and pulling out of fights, whereas mathews - regardless of an exciting 3-round win over choi - seems always at risk of being KO'd (whether by head or body shot).
pros to both men, i'll be first to give them credit if they put on a good show. but i'm just not sure this is the best of europe.

I can't see Matthews coping with Rees strength or power. Rees by stoppage.

thanks for your support fellow welshmanCardiff-Lad1 wrote:Well i've stupidly bet with my 'always back an underdog' method (which i stupidly didn't when Selby smashed Smith) and have £40 on Derry @ 4/1.
I've written it off already as no one really seems to think he'll win but i've always liked Derry and he seems much better at this weight so we'll see.......![]()

It's amazing to think Rees has still only suffered that 1 loss to Kotelnik. It seems like such a long time ago.
Re: Gavin Rees v Derry Mathews Oct 1st
I've got a lot of time and respect for Derry, i've met him and watched him train. He puts alot of hard work in and i really do hope he wins this fights.
But, I think Rees will be too strong for him and surely he has learnt from his last 2 fights where he was dead on his feet after 6 rounds. If the same happens again to Rees i'll be shocked.
Great fight and 2 fighters i really enjoy watching so fair play to them for taking on the fight

All I am going to say is - come on Derry!!!!
Re: Gavin Rees v Derry Mathews Oct 1st
what does it say when home fans are backing against the home fighter and Derry is taking an army of scousers down with him even tho its derby day!the rock wrote:thanks for your support fellow welshmanCardiff-Lad1 wrote:Well i've stupidly bet with my 'always back an underdog' method (which i stupidly didn't when Selby smashed Smith) and have £40 on Derry @ 4/1.

Rees by stoppage....he's levels above Matthews and his body punching will prove decisive.

Re: Gavin Rees v Derry Mathews Oct 1st
Matthews shouldn't be underestimated. I give him a chance and the 4/1 is way overpriced IMO. I'll be having some of that. I'll never forget the boxing lesson he gave Steve Foster Jnr. If Derry's confidence is back he's got a chance. For those who think it's a blow out for Rees; tell me this: is John Watson that much better than Derry? Because he hurt Rees and was right in the fight until Rees landed that great short right hand.
Re: Gavin Rees v Derry Mathews Oct 1st
i agree with all you say. not long ago mathews was stopped by scott lawton, and has seemed in danger of folding since the first fight with choi. a true measure of where ghe is now can possibly be seen in that fight with buckland, in prize fighter...stevieb_8006 wrote:i dont see wot derrys done since coming back to make any1 think he can even live with rees. he beat choi over 3 rounds ffs, would prob have got stopped if it had gone another 2. beat a novice fighter last time.

that said, a strange/interesting style and size matchup. hopefully it heats up into a terrific title match. we know mathews did have class, a few years ago. hopefully his tank is full and he can stand up to rees' fierce attacks. he was able to shake choi in the rematch and hopefully he can make an impact on rees, making the fight interesting and competitive.
