Bredis Prescott, Robbed!
Re: Bredis Prescott, Robbed!
I had Prescott by 2. People onhere keep saying that some of the closer rounds could have gone either way, but Prescott threw all the heavier punches and scored a knockdown. I had McCloskey needing a knockout by as early as round 8. McCloskey showed alot of heart but should never have got the decision, I'm affraid it was another bad night for British boxing, shame it came a night after the farce in Mayfair.
Re: Bredis Prescott, Robbed!
My take too, pal. I had Prescott up by one and thought he just about deserved it following a strong final round. No robbery though IMO.GLOBALBOX wrote:I had Prescott by 1 pt but the first was not a kd and therefore in reality I would have scored the fight a draw, don't think in anyway it was a robbery, whilst
accepting Prescott looked decent in spells, there were plenty of times the commentator was crediting him with connecting when in fact you could clearly see some
of them caught gloves or actually missed.
No robbery for me it was a very close fight, a fight of two halfs without doubt.

I had Prescott winning, but wouldnt call it a robbery..Id be very surprised if McCloskey wins a world title on that showing..
Re: Bredis Prescott, Robbed!
i've never been impressed by mccloskey - he looked well out of shape in comparison to prescott, and some difference from the condition frampton was in before him. he's nowhere near world level, and shouldn't really be given another shot at a title. but the irish will follow anyone passionately, regardless of how talented the fighter is. mccloskey will make a lot more money than boxers his standard should, so fair play to him for that. as for the decision, we all had it a draw, or close win for prescott. home crowd sways it though, mccloskey was getting roars for near misses never mind hits.
Re: Bredis Prescott, Robbed!
and if the fight had been another 20 seconds, mccloskey would have been on his back. he almost collapsed at the final bell and had to be held up. prescott can't complain too much though, he had ample chance to finish it and didn't

Re: Bredis Prescott, Robbed!
the commentary was farcical all the way through, whilst Prescott was dominating early on, you'd have thought he was giving some sort of Mayweather style masterclass the way they were talking rather than just missing less than he did against Mitchell.
He did get behind his jab more than we've seen him do in the past, but McCloskey's low hands and lack of movement made him an easier target as much as anything compared to Kevin who gave a great example of in and out boxing. The energy sapping wayward wild swings were still there last night, he just connected with some of them and they didn't mention the several he missed with
As Ian said, McCloskey showed a great chin, taking some flush shots, and great engine to come on as the aggressor in the later rounds in complete contrast to Prescott who had no snap in his punches from about round 6 on. Even in the 12th when Prescott was clearly just throwing anything he could, it was cumulative and exhaustion on McCloskey's part that had him in trouble rather than Prescott hitting anywhere like as hard as he can in early parts of the fight
It was an enjoyable and absorbing fight and felt very close at the end, McCloskey showed he has some attributes of a decent level boxer, but his conditioning looked awful - as has been mentioned, you just had to look at Frampton in comparison, and if the lad did end up in a rematch with Khan, he'd be absolutely destroyed if he went in in that sort of shape.
Like Frankie, he might not have that natural athletic look about him, but it doesnt look like he lives the life that gets you into that rarified class of elite fighters even if you have talent and heart.

Re: Bredis Prescott, Robbed!
I wanted Paul to win and I'm sure he'll realise (if he hasn't already) that the home crowd edged him that fight and not his own efforts.
His work was largely ineffective and he was running on empty in the last minute, unable to raise his glove to the crowd.
As said, all the effective punches were landed by Prescott, who rocked McCloskey a bunch of times throughout the action. I don't recall seeing Breidis troubled by any punch coming his way whatsoever. Sure he was tiring at the end... and?
Pressing forward and grinning, with a vociferous crowd behind you seems to win you fights it would seem nowadays, despite wearing a mask of blood and being rocked many many times. E.g. Jamie Cox.
Not the worst decision, but certainly not the right decision.

Seriously, boxing here is beyond a joke. It happens everywhere, but recent years have made German judges look neutral and competent.

Re: Bredis Prescott, Robbed!
People that say "if a KD was counted then a judge must score it" obviously dont know the rules of boxing.
Thats not what the rules say.
I was blind sided from the punch/clothes line and therefore didnt see it clearly and havent see a replay yet either.
Therefore I took the refs word for it and ruled it a legit KD in my scoring.
However, if I was a judge and saw it wasnt a legit KD then I would ignore it.
I had McCloskey shading that round up until then but with the KD punch I gave the round to Prescott 10-8 because that was the mos significant piece of action in the round and would have been enough to swing the round back in favour of Prescott.
But if I saw it wasnt a legit punch I'd have scored the round 10-9 to McCloskey.
So just in the first round you can see there could have been a swing of 3 points. No wonder there was differing opinions on the scoring.
A close fight that could have gone either way.

Re: Bredis Prescott, Robbed!
See now this is what pisses me off about people like YOU.
'It could have gone either way'. Are you freaking serious? A draw maybe but in no shape or form did McCloskey win that fight, no chance, draw yes, win? Absolutely not.
The fight was close, McCloskey simply didn't do enough in there to get the nod. Every noticeable and hurtful shot were delivered by Prescott.
This fight was a robbery, why? Because Prescott lost. A draw = controversial but up for argument. A win for McCloskey = Robbery.
Some of you guys really need to watch Boxing without the sound off, you will see things alot differently I can assure of that.
Rant over.

You seem a rational intelligent guy!
So you think the fight could have been a draw but if there was a variation of another single point in favour of McCloskey then it was a robbery!
I getcha!

Re: Bredis Prescott, Robbed!
Scoring an otherwise competitive round 10-9 for the boxer that was ruled down by the referee---regardless of the legitimacy of the knockdown---contravenes the set of rules that I am familiar with (ABC). Do you know for sure that a 10-9 score for McCloskey would've been permitted under the rules that governed the bout, or are you assuming that? If you know for sure, can you post a link to the set of rules or quote the rule which supports your position?slapbangwhallop wrote:People that say "if a KD was counted then a judge must score it" obviously dont know the rules of boxing.

On a related question, do you know if judges can refuse to deduct points for a foul if they believe no infraction was committed? Can they deduct points if they believe that an infraction had been missed by the referee? In other words, according to the rules, do the judges even have to give a damn about the official decisions made by the referee?

Re: Bredis Prescott, Robbed!
If a count is taken up it must be taken into account.
It IS NOT compulsory to score a round 10-8 just because a knock down has occurred. A 10-8 scoreline indicates a conclusive round where the winning boxer has completely dominated and scored 1 knockdown.
Any point deductions made by the ref must be accounted for when submitting your scorecard. A judge cannot incorporate his own point deductions for fouls that have not been highlighted by the ref.

It was nothing like a robbery- prescott ran out of steam in the last 3rd - i had him winning by one round.
Macklin was a robbery.

Macklin similarly close, he ran out of steam too, that was a close one
the Cox fight, Tom Dallas against Page - they were true robberies - just inexplicable scoring.

What fight were you watching? macklin outlanded sturm in almost every round if not every round. In some of the rounds sturm did the classy eye catching work which i would have given him the rounds for but other than that he got clearly out worked and outlanded.

Re the Prescott fight, I watched a fairly close fight with slightly biased commentators. But I didn't see a robbery.

I agree. I didn't score the fight myself, but wasn't surprised or shocked when Paul got the nod. If I remember rightly Prescott clearly lost the last 4 or 5 rounds and although he had the start of the fight in the bag, there were other close rounds. Defo not a robbery decision in any way.housesecond wrote:Re the Prescott fight, I watched a fairly close fight with slightly biased commentators. But I didn't see a robbery.

Why do some people think that McCloksey won the 12th?

I can't really see that. He was hurt and taking punishment during the final 30 seconds and the action before that had been two way.

he wasn't THAT dominant after about round 4 - the quality work came from Sturm and he it was nip and tuck from there with Sturm landing scoring punches in later rounds - it could have gone either way.
Cox was beaten
Dallas was beaten
the only people who disagreed were the judges/refs in those situation - anyone else with eyes could see it clearly. There's arguments for both Macklin and Sturm / Prescott and McCloskey but no defending those other two

I'm always, always happy to learn.
What do the rules say, then?
I thought if a referee called a knockdown and issued a count, then a judge had to take this into account when scoring the round. BBBoC style, anyway. God knows about the WBA.
