Re: Maloney heavyweight tournament
This is where I stopped reading. If there is going to be a Heavyweight Tournament then for it to gain credibility there needs to be eight recognised Heavyweights.leforge wrote:8 novices picked. Does not mention tv.
On the British Heavyweight scene, imagine if these eight fighters got involved:
Dereck Chisora, Sam Sexton, Audley Harrison, David Price, Richard Towers, John McDermott, Scott Belsahw and Martin Rogan.
(I've kept Williams, Skelton & Sprott's name out, because we really need to ove on from these guys).
Re: Maloney heavyweight tournament
The idea is novice heavyweights, give a young lad a crack.
I'm all for new idea's, i'll try and follow it, nothing to lose. If its rubbish, at least they've tried something different

Replace Fraudley Harrison with Big George from down my road and you have my vote mate (You won't know Big George but he'd put up a better fight than that clown)Crease wrote:This is where I stopped reading. On a serious note, Recognised heavy weights would just be a better than average prize fighter and these sound like two different things
i think its a great idea for novices to be given a chance
Re: Maloney heavyweight tournament
Get sky on board. Try get them to do it on another night like they doing with prizefighter now. Who in it?FtmPress wrote:Here hoping ?leforge wrote:DO you think tv will be interested?stevegoodwin wrote:and Scott Belshaw who has lost his last four fights (ALL BY KNOCKOUT)!!!!!

Re: Maloney heavyweight tournament
Just read the blurb. An unashamed rip off of Prizefighter, but spread over a few months rather than on the same night. Best of luck to Frank I suppose but I can't see this taking off, who'll really care about the outcome ?
It would have worked better the other way round, if Prizefighter tournaments were spread over several months, and somebody decided to stage the whole thing on one night I'd have said "genius", but doing it the other way round.... hard to get excited. Maybe I'm just in a mood. Good luck Frank

Re: Maloney heavyweight tournament
How is this a prizefighter rip of a complete different format and is on a league base and is only open to novice boxers we are looking for a star of the future not to bring back old guys.JimJim2009 wrote:Just read the blurb. Re: Maloney heavyweight tournament
Fair enough Frank, if its open to novice boxers, and to search for new talent, and not to bring back oldies then yes its different. Best of luck with itFtmPress wrote:How is this a prizefighter rip of a complete different format and is on a league base and is only open to novice boxers we are looking for a star of the future not to bring back old guys.JimJim2009 wrote:Just read the blurb. Re: Maloney heavyweight tournament
This could be good, the best thing about prizefighter is seeing a good young fighter like Rocky Fielding coming from nowhere and winning the thing, seeing people like Robin Reid who is way past his best is a bit sad imo.I hope this concept finds a good young heavyweight for the future

Re: Maloney heavyweight tournament
An absolutely fantastic idea and no way a 'prizefighter' rip off - they were doing novice heavyweight competitions way back in the 1950s and 60s for a prize of 2000 pounds.
I would like to see 8 pro debutants make the show - something like the 'next great heavyweight' show that was done over in Canada.
Because then you add another 8 heavyweights into the domestic scene - no bad thing.

Re: Maloney heavyweight tournament
Interesting idea .
when it says novices does it mean current pros with just a few bouts under their belt or are we talking about guys just turning over ?
if its new pros turning over then its terrible timing for guy i know , he was going pro in april just passed but got offered a job in australia , which he starts at the end of this month so is going to turn pro over there instead , already got a gym sorted and everything .

Re: Maloney heavyweight tournament
Well Prizefighter itself is a ripoff of the Superfighter idea (which never happened), which was a ripoff of the Thunderbox tournament (won by Maurice Harris), which was a ripoff of the People's Choice tournament (won by Tony Tubbs). Barry Hearn is credited for making it a regular and ongoing concern, though.JimJim2009 wrote:How is this not a prizefighter rip off ?

Re: Maloney heavyweight tournament
Got me interested. I like the idea to give new guys a chance and exposure. People need to get over the fact is may be similar to Prizfighter, who cares if it is as this is potentially more boxing for us to watch. Give it a chance people, I will.
