I was looking through the records and i came accross this fight. with the points it says Archie was leading the fight untill he got stopped, was he really beating patterson up untill he got beat? has anybody seen the fight and can share what happend in the fight?
also how come Archie was chosen to fight patterson for the vacant heavyweight title, when he was still lightheavy champ? and even after losing to marciano.
also looking at his weight during fights i noticed that archies weight ranged from 85+ then would come down to 79 kg in light heavyweight title fights, how come he did this? wouldnt this be bad for his trainning regime having to lose so much weight? Royjones cant really use that excuse of weight drainage when you look at archie, he seemed to do it all the time and win.
Archie Moore vs patterson
I might be wrong, but as I recall that fight Moore was not at his best, and was generally outworked by Patterson until he was stopped. I don't remember him being ahead in the fight, rather that he was a shadow of the Moore who fought Marciano.
As to how he got the fight, Marciano did say that Moore and Patterson were the best two guys to fight for the vacant crown, but I guess the real logic behind the match up was that Moore had done well against Marciano, and most of the other heavys he fought, while Patterson had beaten Tommy Jackson (who himself had come to the top of the heavy's at that stage) and was seen as the young contender that had emerged from the bunch. So it was a logical enough match for the vacant title.
Regarding Moore's ability to loose weight, he always claimed that what he did was to chew steak, swallow the juices and spit out the meat! I suspect that while he may have done that, he more than likely also sweated off the pounds on the road or in a steam bath... but he did go through some long fights as a light heavy and he hardly fought like he was drained.
