Doctor in the Morales v Cano fight needs to be struck off
Cano, a very brave young fighter who looked like having a great future in front of him before last night, took a hell of a beating. He's obviously finished by the 9th, and has been for 3 or 4 rounds now, but too brave to quit. The ref leads him over to the clueless doc, who takes a look at his face: covered in blood, battered to a pulp & eyes closing, he looks like he's been in a bad car accident.
So what does the heroic good "doctor" decide is best to do ? Send him back out for more. Unbelievable. God help you if you're in trouble and this doctor shows up.
Even a fighter as ruthless and Morales was gesturing for the idiot ref to stop it by the end.

I agree that the fight should've been stopped when the doctor was summoned, but Cano was right in the fight until the 8th, which is when he really started taking punishment.MightyWarrior wrote:Cano, a very brave young fighter who looked like having a great future in front of him before last night, took a hell of a beating. Re: Doctor in the Morales v Cano fight needs to be struck off
you are used to seeing brit doctors stop fights ridiculously.
cano could see out of both eyes and his cuts werent bad enough to warrant stopping the fight. if his corner wanted to stop it they could have. they know their fighter. cano could have stopped himself. the doctor did a slendid job. this is boxing, not marbles. the boxer was cut and his eyes were swelling but he was still able to fight.

The doc is meant to be there to assist fighters, who might be let down by thick refs or brave cornermen - Cano had been beaten to a pulp, what possible good was there in sending him out for more. I really can't see how anyone would want to see that fight carry on - seriously?
Re: Doctor in the Morales v Cano fight needs to be struck off
By the time the doctor was called to the ring Cano was getting hit by every right hand launched at him. He clearly was not able to defend himself properly, and was therefore getting beaten to a pulp.allahsnackbar wrote:you are used to seeing brit doctors stop fights ridiculously.

The doctor is not a boxing expert or even a boxing fan.crusader wrote:By the time the doctor was called to the ring Cano was getting hit by every right hand launched at him. He is paid to look at injuries and assess the injuries.
Canos injuries did not warrant a doctor stopping the fight due to those injuries. His cuts weren't really that bad and his eyes were open. Maybe if an eye was swollen shut or a cut was as bad as Vitalis but the injuries themselves did not warrant a stoppage.
Re: Doctor in the Morales v Cano fight needs to be struck off
If an injury is so bad that a fighter cannot see , the doctor has every right to stop the fight. This has nothing to do with whether he is a boxing fan or not.
Cano could no see anything Morales threw with the right hand and his health was in jeopardy due to this fact.

I understand your point but I think you are wrong. Cano could see clearly out of both eyes. That is what the doctor checked. As far as Canos injuries went.. he was ok to fight on.crusader wrote:If an injury is so bad that a fighter cannot see , the doctor has every right to stop the fight. So the argument now turns to the doctors responsibility to stop the fight if the fighter is taking punches. Well, thats not the doctors job. Thats the job of the referee, corner or Cano himself. The doctor assesses injuries. Thank God he didn't behave like Brit docs who stop fights at the first sign of blood. (the fighter stopped is usually the foreign fighter of course).
Re: Doctor in the Morales v Cano fight needs to be struck off
I thought it was very clear that Cano was having trouble seeing. His eyes were almost completely closed, and he seemed completely unaware of when a punch was coming and where it was coming from. I'm not sure of the process a doctor uses to test a fighter's vision, but the doctor took a very short look at Cano and never spoke to him about his visual capacities.
I have seen fights where a doctor calls a halt to a bout (or asks the ref to stop the bout) because one fighter is taking a beating, not because of a grievous wound, so I don't think the corner and the ref are the sole arbiters of whether a fighter has taken too much punishment. I believe the doctor is there to stop things when a fighter's health is in jeopardy, whatever the reasons are for that. Cano was cut, swollen, and getting battered to the point where the action was difficult to watch (I strongly disagree that he was 'still able to fight'), and I believe that the bout's continuation produced only negative consequences. Thankfully Cano's corner realised this after ten rounds.

Well the doctor can only look at the injuries presented and make a quick judgement based on his many years of experience as a medical professional. He is the one who has a hands on view of the injuries and we have to trust his opinion that they were not sufficient enough to warrant a stoppage.crusader wrote:I thought it was very clear that Cano was having trouble seeing. The main arguement here is the doctors responsibility to stop a fight if a fighter is taking punches. I think the referee and corner (and fighter to an extent) have more of a responsibility than a doctor. I think we disagree on the doctors role. During the fight, is his job to assess the injuries of the fighters and make judgements on the severity of the injuries. Or does he take a more proactive role and have a say in stopping a fight if he thinks a fighter is getting hit too much.
Well I would strongly disagree that a doctor should be able to stop a fight unless the fighter is physically wounded to the point that he cannot fight on due to his injury. THAT is the doctors job imo.
If you start expecting doctors to stop fights if the fighter starts taking punishment you will get a lot of ridiculous stoppages because doctors are supposed to stay on the cautious side. You wouldnt have seen Gatti vs Ward 1 go the full distance for instance.
