I watched a seasoned pro Johnny Melfa fight bare knuckle against a travller in gloucester ,Melfa was no joke and had fought Steve Collins ,Chris Eubank ,Herol Graham as a pro ,Melfa started off ok but in the end got chopped to bits by the young gypsy lad and was stopped..like i said different game with no gloves or time limits or rest periods ;;-)

i dont know.
but its a fight so different boxers wil ladapt differently and same goes for bare knuckle fighters.

doesnt the adage styles makes fight still rain true.

so wat am saying is i doubt either is better than the other prolly jus depends on who is fighting who. as it is hard to categorically say one is better.

Melfah didn't have many pro fights and lost half of them. And most of those were by knockout.

We have all different opions and mine is that a Good Boxer would beat a good Bare knucked fighter ;;-)
I was brought up watching all the fights my self and to be honest most of them are shit..
They don't need time limits coz the Pace is terrible, don't get me wrong you do get a good odd fight but 9 out of 10 are shit..

I agree to disagree with ya mate :)
I have seen lads with 30+ fights in the AMs ,fight on sites and get beat in no time by harder more seasoned bare fist guys that have had far less Amateur boxing fights than the guys they are fighting,
My experience has been that fighting with 10-12 oz gloves on is a far different dynamic than fighting with just a clenched fist ,firstly you cant block half as many shots ,this something Naively forgotten by boxers wanting to bare knuckle, another thing is the use of the thumbs and finger nails that cause terrible cuts/injures etc this another thing normal boxers ent used to doing or having done to them in a ring boxing fight ...also blowing/ your hands out early can make guys pack in etc
Some fights can go long but some can be faster paced ..not all are slow...remember there ent no weight limits ether so you could get a 12 stone man fight a 16 stone man .
It all depends on style But My point is because you a good ring boxer don't necessarily your gonna be a good bare fist man and visa versa etc

Fought for a British title ;;-)
I still see a gypsy lad with no boxing fight experience beat a Pro boxer in a bare fist fight ...that was my point mate..he cut him and stopped him ...Melfa couldn't continue .

Melfah was an ABA finalist, losing to Nigel Benn on his feet. Lost to Herol Graham on his feet and Kid Milo via body shot KO.

Eubank's right hand left him in intensive care though with a completely shattered jaw and severe concussion.

When did the Melfah fight with the gypsy take place?

I live near Gloucester and occasionally see him in town ...... and to put it kindly, I always get the impression he's taken one shot too many to the head. :-?

I had to ask Melfah a few questions back in the 1980s, one of which was, "what job do you do?"
"I'm an artist," said Johnny. "I draw the dole."

What a shame. Melfah gave Rod Douglas a really good fight in an ABA final (and later Benn) and had a look of Randolph Turpin about him. He could fight.

How come the last fight in the film, the one in England for the big money, was a draw? I thought they carried on until someone gave in, or have I missed something?

Looks like Michael Quinn McDonagh may have killed his wife. He's the guy who bit Paul Joyce & was DQ'd when he was 18 or 19 & redeemed himself 9 years later in a rematch with Paul at the end of doc.

Bareknuckle boxer Michael McDonagh has been charged with murder after his wife’s body was found in their home on Wednesday.

McDonagh is familiar to many MMA fans as a central character in the documentary Knuckle, which followed the lives of some Irish travellers who make their money by participating in bareknuckle boxing matches with fighters from other traveller clans and families.

Police say his wife Jacqueline was found dead in the early hours of Wednesday morning after neighbours reported a disturbance. She had been battered with what appears to be a blunt instrument of some kind. McDonagh handed himself in to police shortly afterwards and was charged with murder today.

most of these guys couldnt fight sleep. they just have a bit of bottle and are prepared to have a go. as londonirish put, there is NO pace whatsoever. a sharp fighter with good footwork would destroy them. tire them out and then unload. most of 'em blow like trumpets after 5 minutes. obv. like anything, im sure there is the odd exception. but most people just love the fantasy of these tough, macho bareknuckle brawlers like in the films, the reality is they are out of shape and only mostly fight their own.

If you watched the film you'd know this has less to do with fighting & more to do with these families problems with each other. This is some Hatfield's & McCoy's sh!t not some Hagler & Sugar Ray sh!t.

i may be jumping to totally unfair conclusions here, but Michael looked to be a rabid sted-head and cokehead to me, from his behaviour.

Yea at first when I heard this I thought it was James McDonagh & was like "damn he seemed like the most normal & humble of them", but soon realized it was Michael & thought "okay that makes more sense."

ha, same here. that programme made me hope James could find a way out of the whole thing. it seemed his family was a real millstone to him.
