FLOYD MAYWEATHER: A FANS ATTEMPT AT BEING OBJECTIVE !!

Post by Quixall »

Yes, i am a floyd Mayweather fan..........There, i said it, now where abouts do i stand for the firing squad :D

This post is an attempt to give an objective account of Floyd Mayweather form a fans perspective because i'm a little fed up with all the "Floyd is the best........" and then "Floyd is a jerk......" remarks that are getting boring in there predictablilty. It seems that people are not willing to see Floyd in a proper perspective, its i people loathe him and he is the worst thing ever to hit a boxing ring or they slavishly love him and can't see any negatives and jump down the necks of anyone who dares make a critical comment. I am writing this post, as a fan of Floyd Mayweather to say that not all of his supporters are blind to his faults, but neither are we prepared to accept that he is the worst human being to walk the earth, surely there is a middle ground to be had, where people have the intelligence not to swallow all of the hype, but also acknowledge that maybe some of the criticisms are not totally warrented and to a degree slightly overboard.

Floyd Mayweather brings excitement to the sport even if some of his fights are not exciting in the respect of say a fight like the Khan - Maidana where to guys slug it out for dominence. Mayweather appeals to boxing fans who appreciate the finer points of the arts of the ring and his talents are unquestionable, only his way of gaining victory is debatable in that some fights like to see a tear up and others can appreciate more subtle approaches. Mayweather is a complex but charismatic character who people are drawn to for his boxing ability, his personality, his brashness, his confidence, his lifestyle and maybe in their hearts they would like a slice of his attitude, some of his money and can appreciate where he is and where he came from in life. On the other hand his detracters and a lot of his fans would acknowledge the more grostesque aspects of his personality, his some time aggressive nature, his disrespectfulness, his childishness, his selfishness, his own sense of self importence, the utter garbage he can come out with, his nauseating self promotion and the sheer contradictions he can come out with at times.

However, very seldom it is talked about what Floyd does for people in his community or the lifestyle that he gives to his family and some would say that they are not bothered about those aspects of Floyd's life and that all they want to hear about is the time he spends in the ring and all aspects to do with that, which is understandable. But to not talk about Floyd the fighter outside of the ring means not giving a sufficiant hearing to those aspects of his life that would possibly go some way to neutralising the opinions that people have of Floyd Mayweather the fighting man. It has to be remembered or acknowledged that Floyd the fighter is a character that has been built up over the years and has been a succesful tool in selling Floyd to the public and making him a lot of money, the "money" character has become a brand in which he can invest and hide behind and it's something that has been succesful, so he will continue to use it. Iam not saying that some of those "money" traits don't find there way into Floyd's private life, because they will do, but a lot of it is staged managed for effect and it works in themes and techniques that are used to sell fights today, such as face off's and 24/7.

I personally think that Floyd Mayweather inspires more people than he is given credit for and i think the intelligent people on this foruma and in the boxing world can seperate the bullshit from the reality and can give credit where credit is due and give criticism where criticism is due without willfully taking sides in this relentless yet predictable debate on Floyd and what sort of a person and boxer he is or isn't. In defence of those people who choose to see Floyd in a negative light, i feel that he purposely takes on the persona of the villain and revels in it, because it matches up with the "money" character, but deep down he cares about his legacy, he wants respect for his achievemenets, he ultimately wants people to see the good in him, but maybe has to settle for the fact that the price he pays for his fame, money and notoriety is the fact that his character, the "money" character can never slip in public, meaning that any good sides to his character will go unseen and unwritten about.

Good points, Quix. I, for one can accept all of that. I can't say I like his fighting style, cherry picking and deluded assumption that he is best boxer ever (he is a looong way off that). He does beat up women, which doesn't get mentioned enough and whilst for his flaws, he is a great boxer, history will never regard him as one of the greatest.

I believe he is a man with deep lying issues, he puts on an amazing front when the camera rolls, yes he seems to have done some wrong things in his private life and he does a good job of hiding it, he is a star...I am a boxing fan and he can box, he is one of the best IMO...I hate his mouth when he opens it but so what, as long as he wins, hes a winner..I believe boxing would not be where it is without him, no1 generates the build up like he does...no one.

I just hope he fights pacman sooner rather than later/never...it would settle many an argument...or would it?? Thats the beauty of the sport when hes involved, always...ALWAYS something to discuss!!!

I think you can only be the best in your era, the rest is up to other people to judge..........

Right now it's a toss up between Floyd and Pacquiao, so the sooner they fight the better. I think it is very difficult to say that any modern fighter will go down as the greatest ever, because how do you get any better than Sugar Ray Robinson !!

Welcome to Boxrec :TU:

I agree, i feel that he has deep issues, but that's not suprising given the background he came from and the experiences he has had in his life. Floyd sells himself very well, he gives people want they want to see and hear and it works well for him.

I also would like too add i believe the sport of boxing is keeping him mentally sane, when he retires..(for real)...He might just be on a long. lonely dangerous road in 10/20 years...i hope not but it would not surprise me.

"when it's all said and done"...Hes a megastar with the record and the skills to back it up.

I think that is down to how much is between the ears, but all boxers and sportsmen alike seems to struggle when they retire

Agreed. An incredible talent. One of the greats without a doubt: cool under pressure, hard to hit cleanly, tremendous stamina, can take a shot and pin point counter-punching ability + underated punching power.

I have said for a while that his punch power is under-estimated and i think this is because it's not associated with Floyd, who is primarily seen a cautious fighter who has gone the distance many times in fights, he isn't seen as a knock out artist. For me it's the speed, timing and accuracy of his shots, rather than out and out power that cause the damage and i think fighters are slightly shocked when they get in the ring with him and face these shots. When Floyd goes from pot shotting to two-three punch combinations he is one of the most dangerous fighters out there IMO.

Mayweather is without doubt one of the greatest to ever lace up gloves. He makes the best fighters look ordinary and he does it without working up a sweat.

Lulls you in to thinking you can hit him then mixes it up. He's as close to perfect in boxing as you can be - best punch efficiency in the game and looks after himself outside the ring as well.

For all my contempt (there is a lot) of Floyd Mayweather Jnr the personality, I can not say that he is not one of the most talented fighters to grace the sport of boxing. All the attributes listed by "big lennox" and "ThereByTheGrace" are hard to find in any one fighter. I just wish they were all attributes of someone that didn't have the mouth of Mr Mayweather.

Fair enough mate - your opinion. But if Mayweather retired again tomorrow then boxing would have a massive gap to fill which wouldnt be filled again anytime soon - once in a generation fighter. Attitude isnt great outside the ring, but he's the best in it at this present time.

I agree with that as would alot of people, but it also has to be recognised that a lot of people tune in to see all the profanity, the flashyness, the cocky attitude, the bust ups etc etc, it's part of the appeal of Mayweather.

He is the best fighter inside the ring and the best self-promoter outside of it. There is no disputing that in my opinion. I also don't disagree that when he permanently retires there will be a big void in the sport. I am all for being flashy and a bit of a character (Eubank and pre-Barrera Naz are two of my favourite fighters) but I just don't like how Mayweather does it. He's more than entitled to do what he does and say what he says because he keeps winning and his hard work has afforded him all the riches he has, but it's just not to my taste.

However, in a discussion about his talents in the ring, I'll be one of his biggest backers because he is supreme.

Jesus christ man, i thought you were going to rate his career or something. Is there a point to any of that, really? Are you a closet anthropological behaviorist, or just plain Mayweather obsessed?

Over on a tennis forum i could wax lyrical all day long about Andy Murray. Do you know that he's not really as glum and downtrodden as he seems? He's into comedy, always doing charity gigs, and he always takes his Mum out for tea on a Sunday. But what the fcuk would any of that have to do with tennis and the fact that Murray has never won a slam?

If you thought that way, was there any need to reply ??

No there wasn't, but your typical of the arseholes that can frequent theses boards !!

Everyone knows his career inside out, so what's the point in talking about that ?

I think you have willfully miss read the thread, his behaviour vs his talents are the main issues right now.........

Next time just don't read on when you realise you don't like the thread after one paragraph, Prick

Is mayweather one of the greatest boxers boxers ever to of lived ? Yes ( IMO )
Is mayweather the most charming man in boxing. No ( but who cares )
Is mayweather the most horrible man in boxing. No ( certainly not )
is mayweather one of the most colorful boxers around. Probably
His not going to be around for much longer so we might as well enjoy him !
Love him or hate him outside the ring is obviously your own opinion but if you can't admire what he does inside it then you can't appreciate the art of boxing, I'm fed up people saying he won't be an all time great because of his attitude, he may not be as loved as say Ali or de la Hoya but who cares ? I judge a boxer by his boxing ability and Floyd has it in abundance !

I believe MAyweather is essentially a flawed individual, but aren't we all? As long as he is boxing the sport has more relevance.

Pac is nowhere near the level of Floyd but Floyd needs to be active and employ a savage body attack then he beats PAc with ease......ease!
