British Amteur Boxer Tribute Thread/Where Are they now?

I'm pretty sure he fought Marsh as a pro.

Yea he did mate and got beat on points in a final eliminator for the british title.
He won the irish title at the liverpool stadium but didnt do much after that.
I'm pretty sure that nobody has ever been convicted for his murder but I doubt he would missed to be honest as he sounded like a wrong'un.
Who ever it was that killed him shot him over 20 times with a machine gun.

good to see steve bunce was here am gutted about shaun gray. on a different note; what about darren mcarrick who iced adrian stone in a final and bradley welsh was a good boxer who seemed to beat about everyone he faced. allan hall was a good n who didn't do that great as a pro but he was a brilliant amateur.

This is going back a bit but Nicky Gargano always looked a potential world class welterweight, won a bronze at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics but never turned professional. I never knew the reason for this and I was chatting to a cousin of his the other day but she did not know either.

what about John Lyon, who i think was a Flyweight/Bantamweight who won multiple ABA titles and represnted England many times including the Olympics....He never turned pro, What's he up to these day's?

i was on a coaching course about 5 years ago and he was working for the a.b.a doing the assesments, talks etc.

i think mcarrick is coaching with boarshaw he boxed kostya tsyzu as well. most of them halls were good amateurs.

andy silk who boxed in the jnr olympics won bronze same year as khan won gold he won a load of titles as a jnr but didn't box much as a senior.

john green who got to two a.b.a finals he did turn pro but never really did much.

Ned lee and bobby beck were top class boxed for repton both southpaw and beck could bang! Also albert coates from Medway golden gloves he won everything as junior had a right tear up with ricky hatton! Hope there doing well.

Alberts Brother Levi was Class to... Nee Lee knew how to box, one hand pawwing out in front use his height and great boxing skill's.. Loved watching Booby Beck he could fight.. The Tokley Brother West Ham was Class. PJ Gallagher's Brother's was Great, really good to watch Sure John had a WAR with Hatton?

another good amateur,was rudi pika he give frank bruno a helluva fight in the aba final and really should of won it. he did turn pro and i believe was unbeaten as a pro as well but sadly took his own life over a bird i believe,he was a good fighter rudi, r.i.p.

another class fighter who you never mentioned is my pal terry waller,5 times a.b.a. champion and boxed in the 68 olympics. he beat boy green and maurice hope but terry never turned pro,after he finished boxing he kept a pub for years but had a accident. i see him from time to time,hes living in kent now but hasnt been too good as he has had a heart by pass.

I worked with a girl who knew I was into boxing and she casually remarked that her former boyfriend (Fiance?) used to box. When I asked if he was any good she said he reckoned he was but she didn't really know. His name Terry Waller!

Any memories of Edika Ward? Won a NABC junior schoolboy title (Class A) in 79 at the Bloombury Centre Hotel and boxed for young England for a time. Gave the game up to become a sea-coaler (I kid you not) and Erroll Christie once drank a glass of his piss (but that story is for another day).

another one who never went pro was the great,late bruce wells. he was a brilliant amateur,he never went pro cos he had a good job on the airlines for years but later got into acting and stunt work. one of his most memroable roles was in "the krays" as he was a good pal of theirs and joey pyle,i liked bruce as he was a gent. he sadly passed away last year as he had cancer and had alzeimers disease,legendary amateur.

Clayton Smith had a couple of wars with my friend Adrian Stone in the amateur"s,won one each if I remember correctly.
He was definitely in Cardiff prison in the early 90"s.
Russell Rees is Gavin"s brother,all part of the all-conquering Gilfach Goch schoolboy squad also including Neil Swain and Gareth Lawrence.

Gareth Lawrence was a class act, dunno what happened to him. Swain was always a bit of a headcase, ended up a smack head, regular jailbird, robbing houses all the time, even heard a rumour he had HIV, def had all the hepititus etc

Great call on Darren Mac Simon, who was a fantastic example of a kid who got there in the end (ABA title)- very unlucky in bouts vs Richardson and Stone in his previous go's at aba's but took revenge over Stone in the final. Saw him also lose a close one to world class Ray Oliveira in Boston. Brain scan did him over here so i think he had a few wins with Beau Wiliford then rapped up. Would have been a knocking bet for British title at least imo.

Gareth was still a boy in the seniors, 17 0r 18 then went pro, Vince was a man when they fought, but nevertheless still a real good fighter.
Lawrence impressed in the pro's then disappeared, same as Rees, lets hope they didn't go the same way as Swain. A tough place to live up in Gilfach, not a place where you have a lot of choices in life.
Having real talent like those boys gave them more choices than most.

I knew Clayton smith ,quarter cast kid ? he was in jail in 1991 ;;-)
