Selby vs Simpson

Post by el_grande_mauro_mina »

An assortment of Jock dingbats over on the other forum are saliviating at the prospect of John Simpson taking the titles off Lee Selby when they fight in November. A lot of them focus on the telegraphed punches Selby threw.

I don't know about anybody else on here but the reason Selby telegraphed those big punches is because the aggressive, come forward style is alien to him but he still won the fight. Selby and his team knew they had to KO Smith to win in Liverpool. When Smith raised his arms after every round after the 5th - he wasn't proclaiming victory but rather saying to the judges 'remember where you are'. Selby had to knock him out to win and he did just that.

Even though in my opinion, Simpson beat Smith twice - both of those fights were very close and I think it is a given that Selby will go back to fighting his own natural style. If Selby beat Smith convincingly with a style that isn't naturally his - how is Simpson going to beat him if Selby goes back to his natural style? Simpson barely beat Smith remember - I don't see where a Simpson victory is a given thats for sure.

Newsflash for the Welsh mafia- something was seriously wrong with Smith on Saturday, he looked awful and I wouldnt be surprised if it comes out he was severely weight drained. I keep hearing about this brilliant masterplan of throwing insane roundhouses. That worked because Smith was having a bizzare off night. If he's tries that against Simpson he's going to be in a whole world of hurt.

If Selby's alter ego is a Pernell Whittaker style master boxer, how come he didnt think it would be enough to outdo Smith?

I take Simpson to punch the daft moustache right off his coupon.

The serious problem Smith had was .... Selby!

But your right - there will be the weight making/sore toe type excuses soon enough though..

He will beat him coz hes better than Smith and Selby imo and yours coz you had Simpson winning both fights against Stephen! Stephen also raised his arms nearly every round against John to try to influence the judges it shouldnt happen but there we go.
Simpson to make Selbys reign a very short one and get his belts back that should never have been taken away.

Simpson won both fights but they were also very close, Selby won his fight convincingly and he applied a style which isn't natural to him to win. The injustices you and John Simpson have suffered should not be reflected on Selby who won those titles fair and square and very convincingly.

He is more of a boxer than a puncher is he not? It would be like Herol Graham headhunting against Tony Sibson and KO'ing him. It takes a fighter of a certain talent to win against his strengths which he had to do or else be jobbed out of a desicion.

Well actually Adam - that is all opinion and not fact but you are entitled to state your opinion on what might happen with the future of Smith. If it was the weight that stopped him from performing then he will need to move up and win those titles in the super featherweight division. If it wasn't the weight then he has some serious work to do and sometimes it doesn't matter what you do (Arguello vs Pryor) some fighters just have that 'Indian sign' over you. Too bad for Smith if that is the case with Selby!

So glad for Selb, maybe now he'll get the credit he deserves but I'm sure he won't. A lot of people made out that his KO on Smith was a fluke but he showed again tonight that he's a level above. Simpson is as good a domestic fighter as you can get and Selby beat him when boxing within his limits when Simpson has given pretty much everyone he's fought before hell.

Hopefully Selb can get a European fight by this time next year, I hope Simpson doesn't retire because there's still some very good fights and wins out there for him.

He is the official challenger for Mirskiktchian and Truscott has already beaten him so take the European title first and then do the Smith rematch, more bargaining power for Selby, same result though I think. This kid could be anything I really like him, he has one of those attitudes that just seems to want to better your work all the time.
