AIBA rankings and seedings

Post by mike222 »

Has anyone actually looked at these lists because they are laughable or would be if they didnt form the basis of seeding at both the worlds and the Olympics. Here are my top fifteen
1 Frankie Gomez is ranked 6 at lightwelter despite having eleven professional fights
2 Kubrat Pulev is listed as 20 at superheavy-he has had 13 pro fights
3 Craig Evans is 45 at feather-he has a 4-0 record in the pros
4 Luke Campbell possibly the best feather in the world is ranked at 39 so will be unseeded at the worlds
5 Raushee Warren is not even ranked so could meet Mischa Aloyan in the prelims
6 Clemente Russo is listed as the number 44 at heavyweight whereas
7 John Squillance of Australia is no 6 at heavy
8 Mike Jewski is listed as the 33rd ranked welterweight
9 Alfonso Blanco who has a 6-0 Pro record is listed at 11 at middleweight
10 Denis Sergeyev who retired in 2009 is ranked 31 at superheavy
11 Blanco Wharton of Nauru is the number 10 at lightfly
12 Norlan Vera is the number 1 cuban featherweight in the lists next is Ivan Onate at 41
13 Alexander Ivanov a promising young boxer is shown as the number two Russian Heavyweight ahead of a lot of big names
14 Russian 64KG Champion Alexandr Solyankov is ranked number 28
15 Joseph St Pierre is ranked the number 3 welter
Remember the AIBA is the sports governing body

AIBA has a very poor system for their rankings with only points given for the World Championships, Continental Championships and World Youth Championships. So boxers are basically ranked on one or two tournaments only.
About the one´s that turned pro, AIBA has no clue whatsoever on the pro scene.

Not much one can add to Mike's excellent post but try these;
1)The Irish 69kg fighter O'Reilly(Euro youth silver) is at no 36 at 60kg
2)Zou Shiming unbeaten for years, World and Olympic champ, not rated!
3)Nordine Oubali of France, wsb r-up, not rated in the top 50.
4)The accepted top p-4-p in amature boxing, Lomachenko only number 4 at 60kg.
and so on and on.
