I've always thought a hardline approach to IJL would result in hilarity:
'I am the weferwee!'
'Er, no you're not.'
Re: Ref carpeted over Cox v Sai
Seriously though you have to wonder how bad they need to mess up for a suspension or to stop getting fights once they are a big name referee.
If the judges in the Williams-Lara fight were Roth/Trowbridge/Byrd do we think they would have been suspended?
Has a top ref ever been stripped of their license? There's too much of a lack of responsibility because a fight is subjective.

I think something needs to be done about the poor officiating in fights over here, it's just happening too often.
The Board of No Control just sweep it under the carpet as they could in the dark days, but they need to move into the 20th (never mind 21st) century and get a f**king grip.
If it's a low blow, warn him.
If it's repeated, take a point.
If it's still repeated, throw him out.
End of story.

The officiating that night was disgraceful, but both the referees and the judges. We cannot allow ourselves to be labelled like other nations like the German's are. Action must be taken against all involved and they should all be suspended and for more than just a 'token gesture' amount of time
Re: Ref carpeted over Cox v Sai
A common excuse that gets trotted out is that ''it's a Warren card''
fornicate sake.... what's he gonna do, kill them?
If you lose, you lose - deal with it!!
Another thing that's really annoying is that every fight that is remotely close ends up as a split decision. Might start logging onto SkyBet and shoving a fiver on both fighters by both split and majority decisions if I can't really make a confident pick! The odds are great.

Suspend his A star status.
Re: Ref carpeted over Cox v Sai
Some refs do actually carry this out. My favourite example is Howard Foster reffing Alan Bosworth v Matthew Hatton. Hatton had been warned a few times, got a point off and did it again (Bosworth was milking it, mind, but he was hit low).LeedsLad wrote:I think something needs to be done about the poor officiating in fights over here, it's just happening too often.

It was the last round of a British title eliminator (from memory) and Hatton was winning comfortably. Mr Foster threw him out anyway. The Hatton fans went mad at ringside...I think Howard had to slip a few shots from an enraged Carol

Mike Jacobs was a Star ref from not so long ago who was demoted down to an (A) ref, appealed against the boards decision lost that aswell then disappeared from the boxing scene :(
I agree 100% with the comments made by LeedsLad, short & sharp but straight to the point & absolutely correct.

His performance needs looking at, but I hope they dont kick him out or anything. We need to work with the refs to up the standard, not be kicking them out.

The thing is we need to know why he saw the fight the way he did and stop it happening again. He doesn't need firing he needs re-training so that he improves his performace in the future. Everybody makes mistakes, but on the night he made too many bad calls just to say it was human error.
Either he was incompetent or he was cheating, I for one just hope he was incompetetent. Incompetence can be rectified through teaching, that surely has to be the answer

Re: Ref carpeted over Cox v Sai
But surely if he was incompetent he would not have risen to the "rank" he has as a referee ?themadmariner wrote: Either he was incompetent or he was cheating, I for one just hope he was incompetetent. Incompetence can be rectified through teaching, that surely has to be the answer
I assume it is not a case of ringing up the BBofC one day saying you fancy being a ref. and the next day reffing a title fight live on TV ?
Rather than use the word cheating, the referees and officials know which side their bread is buttered.

Re: Ref carpeted over Cox v Sai
Not many fights get so many nut shots either, so that is were you could say he may have been incompitent. The fight was strange and Cox was wrong on many occasions, some of which could have been missed by the ref not looking properly, but not miss as many as he did.bripez wrote:But surely if he was incompetent he would not have risen to the "rank" he has as a referee ?themadmariner wrote: Either he was incompetent or he was cheating, I for one just hope he was incompetetent. I think what arouses suspicion is that it's never the ''away'' fighter who benefits from a questionable cut stoppage or a one-point decision..... it's human nature to think that way when it seems to happen every week.
I'm struggling to think of many examples where an away fighter has received a close decision in recent years - Thaxton vs Mezaache springs to mind, Laryea vs Appleby wasn't that close in the sense it was debatable.... Sai clearly won more rounds than Cox and also had two points in his favour
Kinda reminded me of Martinez vs Cintron.... one man wins more rounds, gains points (in the form of deductions as opposed to a KD) yet doesn't get the decision.
In the days of two tins held together by string being the only form of communication (though that's better than the reception on my iPhone) it was possible to sweep these things under the carpet, but was a global TV audience with eyes and ears.... can't get away with it anymore.
One thing I was pleased to hear was that a significant % of the complaints to the Commonwealth Council were from British viewers, obviously we are concerned that our officiating is becoming as bad, if not worse, than Germany.
They truly are THAT bad at the minute.

My personal belief is that some referees and judges are simply corrupt - I could of course be very wrong but I would take some convincing. One of these days some enterprising journalist might blow the whole thing wide open and throw in the journeyman issue for good measure. Might take a while though.LeedsLad wrote:I think what arouses suspicion is that it's never the ''away'' fighter who benefits from a questionable cut stoppage or a one-point decision..... it's human nature to think that way when it seems to happen every week.

Yeah a bit harsh in hindsight, it's quite a drop from all the title fights to area level reffing.peter1948 wrote:Mike Jacobs was a Star ref from not so long ago who was demoted down to an (A) ref, appealed against the boards decision lost that aswell then disappeared from the boxing scene :(

Funnily enough, i was thinking about this fight the other day. I did wonder if there was going to be a re-match, since it was formallly recognised that a lot of e-mails expressing disatisfaction were recieved. Anyone heard / know of anything?

Great piece by Martin Supple on referees
