Olympic / WSB bribery scandal
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-15020658
"BBC Newsnight has uncovered evidence of secret payments of millions of dollars from Azerbaijan to international boxing organisation World Series Boxing (WSB).
Whistleblowers say that WSB's chief claimed the money was in return for a guarantee that Azerbaijani fighters would win two boxing gold medals at the London 2012 Olympics."

Wish i could watch this interview in the states. The interviewer was really pushing him which caused a no comment to come out but still denying they allegation is true. This is bad...very bad

I'm surprised that the press haven't picked up on the allegations of corruption levelled at the ABA of England that resulted in an internal and external audit following further whistleblowing?
Perhaps the awarding of the European Championships to Liverpool in 2008 would be worth looking at?
Maybe asking some questions as to how the ABAE managed to pass accounts without a *nominal ledger that showed an increase in overheads from around £40k to over £500k in just 3 years?
* at a time when Liverpool Direct were handling the accounts for ABAE.
NB: Former ABAE Financial Director Dr David McElhinney, now head of Liverpool Council and former CEO of Liverpool Direct may have the answers? Or even Derek Mapp former head of Sport England and now Chair of the British Amateur Boxing Association and former Sports Minister Richard Caborn, now President of the ABAE?
Would the placement of Tomlin (gagging) orders on the legal situation regarding the payment of bonuses to the Bejing boxing medal winners be worth looking at?

Re: Olympic / WSB bribery scandal
PS: Mr Wu has spoken of cleaning up AIBA and referred to a number of dismissals which no doubt included former ABAE CEO Paul Kings removal from his position as EUBC head of finance where again there was failure to provide suitable accounts.
Re: Olympic / WSB bribery scandal
No surprises there. It just amazes me that for some countries, they will do anything to win gold especially at the Olympics.
Re: Olympic / WSB bribery scandal
Not saying Paul King was good or bad but Wu wanted him out since King wanted to run against him.Tarquin Tarpaulin V wrote:PS: Mr Wu has spoken of cleaning up AIBA and referred to a number of dismissals which no doubt included former ABAE CEO Paul Kings removal from his position as EUBC head of finance where again there was failure to provide suitable accounts.

In my opinion, there is not much difference between Chowdhry and Wu - except Wu, and Kim, is slicker. 8)

Kings dismissal from EUBC was of his own making.JMac wrote:Not saying Paul King was good or bad but Wu wanted him out since King wanted to run against him.Tarquin Tarpaulin V wrote:PS: Mr Wu has spoken of cleaning up AIBA and referred to a number of dismissals which no doubt included former ABAE CEO Paul Kings removal from his position as EUBC head of finance where again there was failure to provide suitable accounts.
We're talking about a man who went on a live radio link and declared that a letter had been sent to inform the Bejing Olympians that they would not receive medal bonuses. There was no letter........

Did you see my use of the word "slick" to define Wu and Kim? And it also took years for any real allegations to be 'proved' against Chowdhry. And I'm not really sure they were......I've heard a number of people say this Mel, but allegations against Chowdry were proven and i've not heard the same about Wu?

It's a two part with the second being a direct interview with Wu.
I also see that AIBA posted a reply in regards to the seeding for host nations. I'm sorry buy I don't think a host nation should get a privilege solely based because they are holding the competition there. All athletes should earn their spots to compete.
I don't see any NBA or NFL team having to give up a position on their team for the host city's player because the super bowl or Finals is taking place there.
People may argue and say "well you want the home country involved in regards to attending and taking interest in it", but thats still a weak excuse and it's a business excuse and has zero to do with the athletes.

Re: Olympic / WSB bribery scandal
It is complete bullshit that they told us at the coaches congress or the technical meeting or at the draw. They never mentioned anything about the azeri boxers being seeded. At the draw I was surprised so many azeri boxers being seeded but I thought it might be through the WSB as the Baku team did quite well there. I don't like the concept though I acknowledge it will be good for AIBA as more countries will want to bid for the major championships.
Re: Olympic / WSB bribery scandal
More countries may also want to invest in AIBA's ventures like the WSB and APB if they are guaranteed medals.
Re: Olympic / WSB bribery scandal
AIBA's rationale (international standard in sports) is bad in my opinion. Wimbledon and IAAF doesn't seed wild card players and host country competitors, they let them participate. Taekwondo gives 4 places to host nations for 8 weight classes (and seeds them last, if not higher in the rankings). Poland and Ukraine are seeded into category one out of four.
AIBA is doing the most for the host by far.
edit: this is regarding the draw

Re: Olympic / WSB bribery scandal
AIBA's internal investigation conducted by its "Special Investigation Committee" (SIC) has concluded that there was no wrongdoing and the claim that there was a promise for gold medals in exchange for $10,000,000 as alleged by the BBC is without merit. However the BBC still stands by its story and is helping the IOC with a separate independent investigation into the issue. Article at: http://www.stabroeknews.com/2011/sports ... on-claims/
