Thats interesting, I always thought they measured fist size but wrapping the measure around your fist (there is a video of Tysons fist being measured that way), however that photo shows them measuring Liston's hand span.

That's a photo op. His wife Geraldine measured his finger span like a piano player. But since he's not stretching his fingers out it's clear they're funning for the camera. The real measurement is around the end of the fist without getting the thumb involved -- which inflates the measurement -- the end of the fist is what you hit opponents with, not the thumb.
