Frank maloneys Heavyweight Tourney

Post by rhino222 »

ive just listened to little frank talking via you tube about his new tournament culminating in a finals night at the excel next june. im liking the idea and frank always brings a bit of excitement to the sport, he is still so infectios after all of these years. frank says they are getting lots of interest from home and abroad, max 5 fights as a pro etc, and with an appraisal system he is going to get the numbers down to 8.... my idea is this:

get the numbers down to 16, do a draw, then have 8 4x3 min fights on a single bill to get the 8 names to enter the competition.

what do you think frank?

I hear what your saying pal ,but thing is there will be substandard guys in there if as many as 16 are used i reckon , if its 8 he can pick and choose the best , but not only the best but the ones with the charisma to cross over to the casual fan too , one of my heavyweights , who has previously told me " im the coolest person youll ever meet" was considering applying as he wanted to go pro anyway but he suffered a BIG k.o on saturday so he may now reconsider that idea , he was winning before the k.o but was one of those punches that you just dont get up from .
Anyway straying off point a bit , while i think getting more on board would be good and give more the maybe once in a lifetime opportunity i think the quality would suffer from it .

remember its not just for uk heavyweights, and who cares if the standard is not brilliant, we just ask for even-ish fights thats all

well to be honest mate , if hes looking for the next heavyweight star id imagine the standard should be good , otherwise its pointless , hes not doing the tourny for the entertainment of us , hes doing it as a long term investment to maybe find the next lennox lewis etc .

I do agree - however, I don't think that he will find the next Lennox Lewis in this kind of format and it looks like some kind of cheap gimmick to me.

To be honest I don't think it's really about finding the next Lennox, I think he's looking for an equivalent to prizefighter as it is that tournament which has turned Matchroom into Skys most wanted.
