This isn't anything new. Frank Maloney used to do something similar.

I dont recall this being used by Maloney before!
Think its great for small hall boxing.

Re: Goodwin's New Idea
Maloney had a fighter of the night where they got £500 if I remember rightly.

Re: Goodwin's New Idea
The idea behind this concept (that Franks previous one didnt wholly do) is
1) Encourage the boxer in the away corner
2) Encourage those boxers to go for a stoppage rather than coast to a points decision
3) Give sometrhing for fight of the night
We are giving £600 for a non TV show which is a lot as many of you will be aware non TV shows do not make a profit.
We hope to develop this idea forward and get sponsorship and make the prizes bigger!
Thanks to Boxrec for throwing in the t shirts

Re: Goodwin's New Idea
Steve in fairness looking at your bill none of the away boxers will win a round let alone the fight. So that means there will only be £400 on offer.
Re: Goodwin's New Idea
Spencer Fearons promotional team have been doing it before aswell.
Re: Goodwin's New Idea
Good idea - it will definitely be an extra incentive, especially for the away boxers - £200 sheets, and a superb BoxRec t-shirt. I've got one, and they wash extremely well - good value at £9.99.
Johnny Greaves is due a win. Dan Carr did ok against Ryan Taylor in the pre-prizefighter bout, and he's in against another debutant in Billy Lavelle. That £200 sovs (and the t-shirt) might just make the difference.

I think everyone agrees that (1) it's a good idea, and (2) it's not as original as the article would indicate.
I do like the fact that BoxRec folk are picking the winners though.

Re: Goodwin's New Idea
It's something positive and doesn't require the fans to shell out more money, which is rather refreshing. Well done.
Re: Goodwin's New Idea
Article states new to small hall boxing. Unless I am mistaken Frank Maloney isn't a small hall promoter?
Re: Goodwin's New Idea
Do the away guys have to win to get bonus or just put in a massive effort?
Sometimes guys put in a big effort and ref doesnt recognise but everyone else does.

I believe it's the guy who comes and tries hardest. They don't have to win.jonp wrote:Do the away guys have to win to get bonus or just put in a massive effort?

Frank promotes lots of small hall shows. Any smaller some of them and you'd have to stick them in my shed.
Re: Goodwin's New Idea
Nice idea btw. hope it works.
Re: Goodwin's New Idea
Its a little bit like the UFC shows where they encourage it. It'll make for more exciting bouts. :)

Re: Goodwin's New Idea
It was my idea, and it's completely original in a sense I never heard of Frank Maloney doing it previously, and when I suggested it to him he never mentioned he'd done it before, also if spencers done it previously I've never heard of it and by the sounds of it a lot of you guys haven't either which completely defeats the idea of The concept raising the profile of fighters by rewarding them for outstanding performances and giving fans good fights.JamesH wrote:I think everyone agrees that (1) it's a good idea, and (2) it's not as original as the article would indicate.

Further to this, too many small hall shows feature bob jones 12-0 (2ko's) against mike smith 17-89-8 (1ko)- they have 40-36 written all over them! The idea that a journeyman has the chance to win a commission bonus purely by putting in a sincere performance will lead hopefully to them taking more chances. This unfamiliar exertion could lead to fatigue and mistakes being made (more ko's) or upsets (more interest).
Further to this I suggested that winners not be announced till the end of the night hopefully retaining the crowd longer- this in turn will allow attendees to familiarise themselves with the promoters other fighters and as such build more of a following.
I wanted the prizes to be significantly more, and I'd also like the websites and press to report and record winners; imagine featuring five times fight of the night winner 'Peter vaughn' against 3 time ko of the night winner Martin concepcion! It's creates a talking point, a selling tool and a it's a bit fun.
Re: Goodwin's New Idea
This is something that had been on my mind for a while and was going to mention it to a local semi pro promoter. The idea behind it makes it more of amfan friendly sport and is a very business minded venture. Kudos jeffro, great minds ei. Boxing can learn fro UFC at times

Re: Goodwin's New Idea
Thanks I've got tons of ideas that I put together mate; Frank passed them on to sky and they really liked my suggestions- but at the same time it wasn't their job to input a lot of things such as these awards. Some of my ideas are perhaps impractical but I'd happily share them with any promoter or the bbbc!kamicazze wrote:This is something that had been on my mind for a while and was going to mention it to a local semi pro promoter. The bbbc are the ones I most would like to do some work for if they gave me 2 hours of their time would change uk boxing forever. If anyone can help get me in the hot seat I'd appreciate it.

It's a cracking idea, well thought out. It's a shame Prizefighter didn't have a 'best punch of the night' last month - you'd have bagged that one by a cundry mile.

Re: Goodwin's New Idea
Jeff is a great guy with lots of great ideas. I would like the prizes to be "significantly more" but as everyone knows there is no money in small hall promoting.
Hopefully the idea gets press and then we can get sponsorship and increase the prizes to the boxers

Re the ko thing! See razak vs shinquin for example tonight
Re: Goodwin's New Idea
I remember boxing news mentioning Maloney doing a cash prize incentive on the night although my recollection of the details of it is a little sketchy. For some reason I seem to remember Tom Dallas winning one prize for a big ko... If you say you never heard of it, that's good enough for me, your a good bloke and its not about having a dig... its just that something along those lines has happened before and I felt the article slightly (though I'm sure not deliberately) misled. I did hear Spencer was doing something similar but I haven't seen/heard specifics.Jeff Thomas wrote:It was my idea, and it's completely original in a sense I never heard of Frank Maloney doing it previously, and when I suggested it to him he never mentioned he'd done it before, also if spencers done it previously I've never heard of it and by the sounds of it a lot of you guys haven't either which completely defeats the idea of The concept raising the profile of fighters by rewarding them for outstanding performances and giving fans good fights.JamesH wrote:I think everyone agrees that (1) it's a good idea, and (2) it's not as original as the article would indicate.

As for the concept itself, I said it was a good idea but all the same, you justified it eloquently
