Set my alarm and got up to watch this, fair play to barker, top fighter and top bloke. It makes it even better when pretty much every yank had wrote him off completely when the fight was announced. They Couldn't even get his name right :lol: hopefully this massive step up gets him more bigger fights he deserves.

Also I'd love to see Alvarez move up and fight martinez :box:

SGM would stand Canelo on his head, mate. In two/three years, maybe SA will have learned more & more importantly Martinez would slow even more but soon?

Nah. Chavez'll be in Alvarez's future, mucho diñeiro.

SGM = Sergio Gabriel Martinez.

SA = Saul Alvarez.

Canelo = Saul Alvarez.

So sorry, was typing quickly. The Spanish was there because they're both Mexican.

Well done to Darren I really thought he was going to get mullered early doors but I'm very pleased he was able to give a good account of himself and bloodied Sergio's conk nicely. :bag:

Daz's bravery, discipline and smart boxing and impressed me just a shame he couldn't weather the storm.

Official scores were 99-91, 97-93, 96-94 Martinez

I had it 98-92 for Sergio at the time of the stoppage. A lot of people got the scoring wrong in this one and were giving Barker rounds simply because he was doing far better than expected. Brave effort that definitely exceeded expectations, but Martinez was throwing more and landing more in almost every round (and he landed almost every notable punch in the fight), and because Barker's output was so low he was unable to do meaningful work in the vast majority of the rounds.

Nevertheless, based on this performance I would give Barker a good chance of beating every middleweight aside from Martinez.

Nuff respect to Darren he proved he can operate at world level and should get another world title shot at some point. Some of those judges scorecards in particular the 99-91 card is just a shambles. Talk about home judging that is a joke of a card imho.

Darren outboxed Martinez in quite a few rounds I had Martinez 2 rounds up going into that 11th round. Taking bias into account maybe take a round or 2 more off Barker = 3-4 rounds, not 7 rounds! Martinez got his nose busted and was eating the Barker jab in the first half of the fight.

The main thing that impressed me was that Barker was in with this 'pound for pound' guy and at certain points he was just outboxing him with better skills. Whether Martinez was taking this lightly we don't know but immense credit must go to the London man.

So should we be disappointed in martinez for last nights performance or surprised in how well Barker fought ?? as i am little confused at the reaction on other forums :-?
End of the day i thought martinez would starch Barker in 4-5 rounds but in the first few rounds i see martinez getting out boxed/bloodied up with the Jab !

dont forget if you take two off Barker you add them to Martinez giving a 4 point swing on the cards. So the 2 point margin is easily converted to 6 with the judges giving all the close rounds to the champion.

I gave Barker two rounds, some rounds were close, but it was a damn fine effort.

We should be impressed with Barker. I didn't see anything wrong with Martinez, other than Barker making him look a little clumsy in rounds 3-5.

Yeh fair point, lol! I kind of lost my point halfway through, but I do feel that Martinez coasted through half that fight and only picked up so many rounds for being the favourite/hme fighter. Barker was looking the much tidier boxer earlier in the fight and a lot of Martinez's work was hitting gloves.

A large part of people's reactions to this are explained by Darren doing better than expected, an even larger part is ignorance of Martinez, because they've only seen the second Williams fight & the Dzinzururk (sp?) one.

No-one who saw SGM fight Alex Bunema (or Richard "The Secret" Williams) for instance, would have expected him to blast Barker unconscious in a handful of rounds. So, if you knew very little about the guy, you were maybe looking at his recent form & expecting Rodrigo Valdez, when in truth he's a bit closer to say, a Hugo Corro... A very good champ, but certainly no tell-your-grandkids-you-saw-him all-timer.

I think Barker has answered alot of critics on this forum. Alot of people didnt think he'd even beat Macklin let alone do that well against number 3 pound for pound fighter in the world.

They next fight is now massive for Barker. Step up Eddie, make the right choice.

Well done Barker, you did this country proud

martinez had a real off night.
barker can't punch, didn't want to punch, almost lost every round and then looked to have bailed out at the end. what's so good about that?

Log out FFS.

So Barker blocking Martinez's shots, walking forward behind a high guard and landing accurate jabs and right hands didn't happen then?

Barker wasn't exhausted and out on his feet before Martinez landed the final combination?

I suppose you'd rather him throw bombs from the first bell and get KTFO, eh?

Barker did a lot better than what I expected. At the end of the 10th I had it all square, but was worried after the 10th that Barker wouldn't be able to finish the fight standing.

I think we have to give Barker credit for his first half showing as he stopped Martinez doing what he does best. The only problem was Martinez was just too good and that showed in the end.

Hats off to Barker though.

thought barker did very well im just gutted he got stopped and to be honest the shot that stopped him looked to have hit the gloves rather than land clean.

imo he fought a good fight, but i would have liked him to try a few 3/4 combos instead of single shots, he was picking him of nice but he would have really caught the judges eye, if he was landing combos.

good effort overall tho and he can walk away with his head held high :TU:
