Can't really understand why John Murray has been thrown into the lions den after a war with Mitchell.

Rios is rock solid and hits hard. Big ask for Murray here.

So Kev must be wondering why the hell the loser gets a shot ( mind you, at least he's already had a chance ).

Bad timing for John - if it'd come one fight ago, his confidence would have been sky high. Not now though....but he's got to look at it like a huge 2nd chance - work like hell over the next few months on head movement and defence.

Who's training him now ? Jimmy Tibbs would be a good call - experienced head to go over to NY with him.

I'm wondering why Mitchell didn't fancy it. I don't believe for a second they went to Murray first.
At a guess, maybe it's an issue of styles? Rios looks to be rather similar to Murray, only better, and with Mitchell getting chinned by Katsidis and coming close to losing to Murray, maybe Rios represents a tougher fight stylistically for Mitchell than he does Murray? Maybe they feel that Murray might at least be able to test Rios as far as punch resistance and stamina goes, whereas no matter how well Mitchell's able to play matador, he'd likely buckle at some point against Rios.

Have Murray fight Rios, Mitchell takes on a decent looking (but beatable) contender, and if by some chance Murray gets fired up enough to make something happen against Rios, that then sets up the Mitchell rematch nicely. The winner could then be gambled against whoever's ruling the 135lb roost at the time, the loser could rematch either Rios or Katsidis.

Even if Murray loses to Rios, that still sets up the fight with Mitchell a treat as the UK would've had an introduction to Rios. If Mitchell loses then, the rematch with Murray still makes sense.

I'm probably reading way too much into it though. It's not hard to imagine Wazza simply issuing Murray with a sink or swim mission as a means to fast track him back into contention, instead of pissing money down the drain trying to build him back up slowly. I wouldn't blame him either, the honus is firmly on Murray to prove that he had a bad night against Mitchell.

As someone pointed out, if Mitchell has a court case coming up, with a possible charge, the US will no doubt nix his visa - so that's a non starter.

Not the first time a fighter gets a world title shot on the back of a loss, if he's still in the top ten.

There's a few people over at eastside hinting that Mitchell may be thinking of leaving Fwarren for Matchroom, could this be true?

Someone also picked up a conversation off Facebook between Mitchell and a fan

Raul van den Bok
hello Kevin, Hope things are well, Let me say what a great performance you gave against John Murray, I've read on the websites that John has got a shot at the world title again Rios, I think you are the one that should be getting that. Dont understand how you can get a world title fight after a lose at domestic level (even though you are both capable of winning world titles. Hope you get your turn. Keep training hard and focused.

thought the WBC would of had something to say on the matter. on one site says you were offered you the fight first but you couldn't travel due to court case pending. if not Fwarren might of seen this is as far as murray is going and getting one last pay day out of him to pay for the contract was given

Not too surprising I suppose, as there was an obvious falling out between FW & Mitchell after the Katsidis calamity.
But to be fair to FW, if it's a voluntary, then Rios can say no to Mitchell, and yes to Murray. And by that I mean it's a money thing - Kev wants more, while the just beaten Murray will take it for peanuts....

Oh Mitchell fancied it alright, infact he actually asked for the Rios fight but Mr WWarren wants Mitchell to sign up to a new contract which Mitchell isn't happy about terms and WWarren unwilling to negotiate. Money talks and Mr WWarren throws plenty of that about where he wants it to get his own way and this is out of spite because Mitchell wont roll over for him. We know the links he has with the BBBofC and know doubt other Governing bodies. Come on, how else would a fighter be eligible for a 'world' title shot of the back of a KO defeat?! What a farce!

is it warens fault that he broke the law and would not be allowed into the US?

If Warren really wanted the fight for Mitchell we all know it would be happening in the UK so your point is irrelevant.

I can only surmise that Mitchell was supposed to be the fall guy, and that Murray was always agreed in principal to be fighting Rios.

That's if Mitchell's FB remarks hold any water.

It would appear that he know's that he wasn't supposed to have won.

Tough ask for Murray. Rios is in your face all night and packs a big punch. Murray and Rios have a similar style of fighting except Rios has a better defense and can hit harder so I can only see one winner and if it goes over 8 rounds I would be very surprised, it will be an entertaining fight for as long as it lasts. My opinion would have been the same before the Mitchell defeat aswell.

Rios was always fighting on the undercard of Cotto vs Margarito.

Unless Waren has sway with US officials at the airport, I don't see how he could have gotten the fight for Mitchell in the US.

If he was getting Rios accros the pond, that would have been expensive and we don't know if Rios would fight in the UK, especially with the ridiculous recent robberies we have seen. If I was him, I wouldn't set foot in the UK to fight anyone.

I don't disagree with any of it, but simply saying that Warren was really keen on that particular route for Mitchell, he would have waited and staged it in the UK on the basis that the additional cost would have been warrented by building Mitchell as an asset. As it stands, he doesn't appear to view either Murray or Mitchell as significant long-term assets in his stable judging by his recent actions. Mitchell's in a contract dispute and Murray's been thrown into a 'sink-or-swim' - both very different scenarios to the ones you see when Warren is dealing with one of his favoured fighters.

Agreed. I think Warren was high on Mitchell but not training properly for Katsidis and then getting blown out turned Warren off. Then the trouble with the law just added to the situation. If Mitchell is badmouthing Warren publically, he will probably be off to Matchroom

I dont know what people are so against this fight. At the end of the day, Mitchell couldn't fight in the US and there was no way Rios was ever going to leave the US, he is the champ and there is no need to. Murray will have been offered the fight and he and only he would have made the final decision that he wants this shot.

We have a brit fighting for a world title, so what he got beat last fight, so what I say. Lets get the fornicate behind him and support him and stop all this whinging.

Come on Murray, at least a few of us are supporting you.

Murrays made for Rios

Should be a cracker whilst it lasts, Brandons overrated but still beats Murray

Can see Mitchell outclassing Rios though.

Poor Murray. Warren decides to cash in and feed him to the Wolves after having him for 12 months. Rios KO 3.

:oo Really? Rios is nothing special but he's a better version of Katsidis. Acosta is a much higher skilled and tougher fighter then Mitchell and Rios stopped him. No chance Kev beats Brandon.

But I think collectively there would be a much larger proportion of people picking Murray to wear Rios down.
At last some brevity.

Murray to wear Rios down before rampaging to a win over Khan and legacy showdown with Floyd Mayweather, who will get effing mullered.

RIOS is overrated!!!!

He hasn't really beaten anyone

He is just a strong brawler type like murray

good fight - murray has a chance - neither is a big hitter, rios just isn't a big hitter, very very overated

the best lightweights are defo jorge linares and maybe katsidis who are proven world class.

Believe me this will be a good fight, can see murray using his head a bit more cos he has got good boxing ability like he showed in his early fights

he fought a dumb fight against Mitchell and just went to brawl, he defo can't do that with rios because its rios type of fight
