In my book Ben Jeby died 7-27 1949, he's listed here as dying in october 1985

I didn't enter the date of death, however my 1981 RRB gives his date of birth as 27 Dec 1909 and no date of death. Gilbert Odd's Encyclopaedia of Boxing (1983) also gives no date of death. Via http://www.ancestrycom I got into the register of births, deaths and marriages. There was one Ben Jeby. The date of birth was given as 27 Dec 1909 and the date of death as October 1985 !. There was no Morris Jebaltowkis, his real name according to RRB registered.

I have a later edition of Gilbert Odd's book (1988) and the date of death I mentioned came out of that book.

OK. I looked up my "Guinness Boxing Who's Who" by Ian Morrison, published in 1991. He gives the date of birth as 27 Dec 1909 and, lo and behold, his date of death as 5 October 1985.

As Yul Brunner would say (as the King of Siam) "Tis a puzzlement !"

At least now we have two exact dates and I will check the New York Times obituary column for both dates, hopefuly later this week.

Checked the New York Times for October 1985. There is a death notice for ben Jeby in the paper on Tuesday 8th October. It was placed by the President of the VBA Ring 8, which I presume is a chapter of the Veteran Boxer's Association. It did not give the exact date of death but the 5th was a Saturday so it's reasonable for a non-relative not to have known until the Monday.

It's a mystery where the date in Gilbert Odd's 1988 book comes from then!
