Kell Brook emerges as genuine world class welterweight

Post by danfoster »

A very pleasing performance - Kell out-thought, out-boxed and totally demoralised the guy ranked #7 by The Ring. As has been said, RJ was made to look like a journeyman. I thought Kell looked like a veteran world-level operator, not a promising contender. He also showed a water-tight defence, contrary to what some on here (no names mentioned Jon Saxon!) have said about him (Ezekiel tells me he took three clean shots all night). So what do you guys think? And who wld everyone pick for his next fight? All feedback appreciated, Kell is keen to read what you guys think ...

I'm not sure if he's world class yet. He's been matched very carefully.

I cant believe people are doubting Kell's performance. Pure class on Saturday night and i believe her is ready for Berto.

I reckon he will have a warm up fight against a half decent name on the Froch undercard to see how he goes down in America before fighting Berto next year for the IBF title

I didn't agree with the stoppage, but Kell produced an extremely impressive performance against an opponent who is being massively underrated in hindsight. Given how the bout turned out it’s easy to portray RJ as the typical foreign import, but we are talking about a fighter who was ranked #7 by The Ring only a few months ago due to victories over Jan Zaveck, Delvin Rodriguez, and many solid continental level operators.

I think Kell has firmly ensconced himself within the top ten of his division, and hopefully we will get to see him prove himself against the likes of Berto, Ortiz, Jones, and Zaveck.

Those from the Scottish countryside who criticised his defence will now criticise him for not being as flamboyant as Naz.

Fuk off :D

Now onto your point.
I'm not sold on him one bit, he fought a bum and not a quality black american (who are usually better fighters) and he looks.. well...kinda pish to me in terms of the fake hype around him.
Like I said I think he's gonna get brutaly ko'd by someone like Ortiz who I think would be all over him like a fungus AND I think he's a front runner fighter without heart (that part was a guess) and once someone good takes it to him he will fold like wet washing.

You can bum him up all you want but I'm not sold on him one bit and I will be on here when he loses explaining to you all (again) why the Ingle style got him his ass kicked a top level.

He should try to box like Khan, he might learn something there.

So no he hasn't "emerged" as anyting yet. In order to do that you have to fight someone with a pulse.

Okay Jon's post wasn't articulated very well and was totally OTT. However, I think he has a point. Kell looked good on Saturday but the guy he was fighting looked poor (regardless of rankings) and the stoppage was an absolute joke.

I don't see Kell getting past Ortiz, Khan or Berto. I think he's just being hyped by Sky because Welterweight is the division of mega fights. IF Brook is better than I think he is, and IF he gets past the Berto's or Ortiz's of this world, then a shot at the likes of Khan, Mayweather or Pac is not out of the question, and this is big money for Sky, meaning they can justify the return of PPV events.

Does this not having anything to do with Kell outboxing him or are we going to put everty good performance by a Brit down to a bad opponent?

Agree regarding the stoppage though, poor

lol what part about that dont you understand?
He fought some white guy who looked like he had been clubbed on the head down the docks and dragged into the ring.

So you and a few others can't seem to grasp why they they did not bring over a good black American (I know why..because the kid aint good enough to beat a Berto) with good rhythm.

How mad is that?

Well said. It's a very good result. I haven't seen the fight yet, but I'm impressed with what I've read. This is great stuff for the British boxing scene. I hope Kell goes all the way.

This was a eliminator for the WBA. So bringing over some rhymed black fighter like Berto was out of the question. Saying that maybe he should have asked Mayweather to hop over for a fight…..ffs.

I dont think your two bob is not that far away but actually i would say Sky are hyping Kell because they are looking for a new British star, period - regardless of weight.

I would say after Froch, Haye and Amir - Kell is the next one to make the jump to potential PPV status.

fighters like Berto come over to the UK for eliminators, like, all the time. ten a penny, they are, over here. you see them at places like Doncaster Dome or the Harvey Hadden all the time.

its not as if the only named US fighters who ever come over here have to be paid £millions, after all, is it? and not as though they'll only ever come over with a belt on the line. nah, the likes of Berto do eliminators against unheralded british fighters for fun. coming over to the UK to fight at a sports hall in sheffield would just add an extra layer of giggles for Berto.

Can some one please explain to me what Brook has done to be considered a "genuine world class welterweight" ??
Would i be so wrong in saying surely to be considered a genuine world class welterweight you need to have beaten world class genuine welterweights ?
Surely beating a few names in the top ten might help this cause ??

this guy was rated above Kell in the Ring rankings, 7th compares to 10th, so it makes total sense. fight lesser boxers who are higher rated to progress

x2. Really Jon, you're not doing yourself any favours here at all.

On a nicer note, I haven't had an opportunity to see Saturday night's fight, but I'd like to ask a question of those who have - could it be the case that it's a styles make fights issue? To use an analogy, was RJ to Kell as Kotelnik was to Amir? In other words, would Kell always look good against this type of fighter even if they're fringe world-class opponents?
It's not a leading question as I'm just genuinely interested in finding out whether Kell really is that good, or whether he'd potentially have a far tougher time shining if he faced a Maidana equivalent?
