I'll repeat about a month ago people were signing the praises of Sky - great fights, dropping PPV etc - now there are threads about complaining and cancelling etc.

It is an interesting period for Sky - normally when there is competition around they will up their game..... but this is the first time there is competition from possibly 4 different sources (allegedly, Primetime, Premiersports and five)..... it is a testing time, and I think it will answer the question if there is money in the pot (or the interest to spend it). There are still options available to sky to show decent international bills. allegedly don't have a monopoly over everything.

Credit where credit's due, thanks to SKY I've seen dozens of classic fights. They have done a hell of a job bringing so many great fighters into my living room. :TU:

I totally agree there but I only watch boxing on sky sports so its barely justifiable now. Im sick of the shelling out I just don't see how allegedly can pay for itself either it seems a bit of a rush job.

If you pat for Sky Sports, then you already get 5 and probably Eurosport. If it's PPV, then it doesn't matter if it was SKY or is Primetime - you still choose if you're gonna pay or not.

allegedly sounds like a good idea in theory, but I'm gonna wait and see if it comes to Virgin and then decide.

Nonito Donaire vs Omar Navaez on allegedly live 22nd October

ITS OK SAYING SKY ARE JUST GOING TO CONCENTRATE ON DOMESTIC SHOWS, BUT SADLY TO SAY OUR DOMESTIC FIGHTERS ARE NOT THE BEST FIGHTERS IN THE WORLD.

TRUE UK BOXING FANS EXPECT AS WITH PREVIOUS THAT THERE SKY SUBSCRIPTION WILL PAY FOR ATLEAST SOME BIG FIGHTS INVOLVING THE BEST OF THE SPORT - OTHER SPORTS ARE SHOWN AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL NOT JUST DOMESTIC.

WE NEED TO COMPLAIN BECAUSE IF SKY IS DUMBING THE BOXING DOWN THEN WHAT RIGHT HAVE THEY GOT TO USE OUR SUBSCRIPTION MONEY SHOWING AVERAGE HATTON, MALONEY CARDS AND HAVING A MILLION PRESENTATORS, PUNDITS GETTING FATTER WALLETS TALKING SHIT BUT NOT SHOWING THE BEST OF THE SPORT

IF THEY HAVE GIVEN UP AND CANNOT COMPETE WITH OTHER CHANNELS THEN WHY TAKE OUR SUBSCRIPTION MONEY AND WASTE IT.

SKY NEED TO SHOW THE BEST LB FOR LB FIGHTERS - COVERAGE THIS YEAR HAS BEEN AVERAGE COMPARED TO LAST YEAR. WE ALL AGREE WITH SKY'S STANCE ON PPV AND HAGLING PROMOTERS FOR BETTER FIGHTS BUT THEY CONTRADICT THEMSELVES

DON'T COMPLAIN BUT I WILL BECAUSE I HATE IT WHEN SKY COULD EASILY AFFORD TO SHOW THE BIG FIGHTS BUT SORRY THEY HAVE THE INTEREST TO SPEND THE MONEY BUT THEN HAVE A MILLION PRESENTATORS ALL IN THEIR FANCY SUITS GETTING RICH OFF OUR SUB MONEY WHEN THEIR NOT SHOWING THE BEST THE SPORT HAS TO OFFER. CON TO QUANTIFY THEIR JOBS

Now that Sky don't appear to be showing any more big cards from the US, I'm not regretting my decision to cancel.

After 18 years, I cancelled in August and went to Freesat (Mrs Heiwa must have her soaps...). Sky offered me a year of Sky subscription for half price to try and keep me, but as my reason was their lack of boxing coverage, I didn't take it - I made this very clear each time they phoned. I'm definitely missing it, but as all I watched with real interest was boxing, I can live without my casual non-boxing viewing. Its sad, but at the end of the day, its all too easy to watch fights online in one way or another. And I'm saving about 70 squids a month which is nice :) I will miss the all-nighters though.

I'll keep an eye on allegedly, but for now I'm done paying for anything more than my TV license.

Personally, I'm not fussed if SKY cut back on showing international fights. If you're that desperate to see them there are other outlets who are clearly prepared to put their hand in their pockets. As ever, as consumers we have the right to choose whether we want to pay to watch Boxing or not.

My main concern is that SKY continue to support BRITISH BOXING, BRITISH FIGHTERS AND BRITISH PROMOTERS to ensure our sport remains healthy and alive in Britain. Other broadcasters' affections for televising boxing come and go, we've seen it time and time again, but SKY have been the one constant thing for more than 20 years. I understand people's current frustratations with the current downscaling of international fights but I'd be more alarmed if it was the other way around with promoters like Matchroom, Maloney and the Hattons forced to put on non-televised shows or scramble for yet another media outlet to support them.

We can't have it all ways. But thanks to SKY, Channel 5, Primetime, allegedly and Premier Sports we've got it more ways now than we've ever had.

Ben,

Your post is as always very good and I agree with large parts. However, what I do disagree with somewhat is your "don't care about lack of US coverage" - IMO it is the coverage of the "big" fights is what helps keep the sport alive here.

Ask any fighter approaching or just in their 30's now, who inspired them to go to the gym.... they'll either say Rocky Balboa or Mike Tyson. You won't here them say Jess Harding or Gary Mason (RIP).

Its the glory of the "world" title fight shown by the stars, the true elite, that gets people wanting to give the sport ago - wanting them to follow their hero. Unfortunately, while we anoraks love the lonsdale belt, call it the most beautiful belt in the business etc.... the kids (as has always been the case) are truly inspired by the "best".

Now, recently we have had a few Brits who have combined both the glamour of the bright lights and being British (e.g. Hatton, Haye, Calzaghe.... and here is hoping Froch and Khan get the big nights). It was fantastic for the sport that their big fights dominated the news (and not just Sports News) and were making the back pages.... but it was their fights with the "best" that did this.

We need to see the likes of Mayweather and Pacman on accessible (financially also) formats to inspire the kids. This will have a bigger impact on the future of British boxing (IMO) than making sure the likes of Jason Booth vs Scott Quigg is on TV.

Take your point, Stu (and Terry). SKY do need to pick it up re: international coverage but if it means this comes at the expense of cutting back on domestic bills then in the long term we could be in trouble. Less money could lead to fewer shows / opportunities for fighters climbing the ladder. Personally, I don't think Primetime and allegedly will be with us for the long haul.

A very salient point. I'm sure Sky would like to broadcast Pacquiao v Marquez III but it shouldn't be at any cost. If PrimeTime or allegedly are bidding big for these fights then it will almost certainly be at a loss with the intention of using the fight to boost subscriptions and PPVs for that channels fights that are more profitable. As I see it the 5 way broadcast split in boxing at the moment is financially unsustainable, with the only real winners being the Promoters who are the benificiaries of a price war inflating rights prices.

Unwise to write Sky off but they need to adjust to the new landscape and quickly.
They knew FW had something in mind, many did, but they were caught on the hop by how quickly it happened and still appear to be struggling to get up to speed on the evidence of the overseas fights going elsewhere.
Sky isn't the only game in town anymore. The days are gone when they could sit back and pick up Alvarez-Rhodes for 25k at the last minute because it was Sky's offer or no one's.
It's a competition now, the cheap deals are over, but I'm certain Sky has the resources to outbid any of the rivals if it wants to.
I'm not reading too much into Pac and Cotto going elsewhere at this stage. I think that's more down to complacency and slowness to react than any lack of finance or will. But time will tell.

They take the piss, overhyping kell yesterday and now this, makes me sick that were just paying for poor b level domestic cards (hatton or hearns) with a million presenters talking shit.

In the last couple of years SKY have shown all or most of Pacman's fight ( best fighter in the world right now ), it looks like since Adam Smith took over, we have lost out, SKY should remain consistent with previous years and must show the best fighters in the world and not let these fights go to Primetime PPV!!

We need to tell how annoyed we are about this fight being on Primetime PPV, makes me sick.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, do a quick e-mail to sky requesting both, the only way we can change things

Manny vs Marquez 12th November
Cotto vs Margarito 3rd December

[email protected]

I will be cancelling my sky sub if this continues
You are laughable. But I'll bite...

Cotto - Margarito is on allegedly (Non PPV but will set you back £10 a month for the privilige of a few live fights and lots of repeats.)

There has been no indication whatsoever that aAcquaio v Marquez will be on PrimeTime. None. It doesn't stack up with their PPV history either so I really can't see it being on PPV.
They secured Manny over two weeks ago with Fury said to be leading the British part. Khan is still on the boil also.

http://www.BS.com/primetime-ma ... ans--43871

Khan's bargaining power has probably increased somewhat since the above article was published due to allegedly's launch so he may well come back home to Sky. Who knows, he is in a really strong position right now.

I think we need to do an e-petition as they're always such a raging success.
If Ghandi, Scargill or the Tolpuddle Martyrs were here they'd all start one, saves going out in the cold.

It's also been said about every sport that got into bed with Mr Murdoch. Looking at Football, Cricket and Darts in this country doesn't give the impression that a great deal is wrong.

If boxing struggles with anything it is a reluctance to move with the times. Innovation is seen as a dirty word and anything that isn't the same as it was during some mythical golden age is modern, crap and a sure sign that the sport is on its knees.

In terms of mainstream awareness and popularity, boxing is at its lowest ebb. Even the most blinkered, optimistic fight-fan must see this.
I suppose. But boxing's downfall has oft been written. And it was only a few months ago we marvelled at PPV figures for Haye, craved multiple boxing channels and success in the Amateurs.

Has that much changed.....it seems Andre Ward got cut, Adam Smith over did the custard on Kell Brook and the arse has fallen out of British boxing.
