Montel Griffin's decision wins over James Toney

Post by 6 Pack »

I didn't see either fight, but read the fight reports. Flippin' through some old magazines the other night I came across the fight reports again.

Both decisions were controversial, but both fights were extremely boring with very little action (which usually makes a rounds able to be scored either way).

Can some one who seen both fights (or at least one of them) let me know their take on who won the fights?

Griffin may have two wins over TOney, and a win over Roy Jones, yet beaten neither of them!!!

Ive seen both of these fights. I saw them a while after they were first aired and I felt Toney won both. One of them was closer than the other, cant remember which. The funny thing is that after seeing these and talking with people I got the impression that I was in the minority in thinking Toney won. This always shocked me because I think Toney is talented but overrated so I wasnt going easy on him in the scoring. Despite this when I talked to people about it they acted like I was nuts and that Toney clearly lost.

I know what you are saying, in the other forum if posted the same question and gave gotten mixed feed back.

These fights sound like they are hell to score. You ask 10 different guys their scores and you will get 10 different answers!

I guess for that reason alone the decisions for Griffin are acceptable. Not robberies or rip-offs. They were honest decisions on a fight that it really depended what you were looking for, and what you perfer to see a fighter do.

These two should never have fought. Neither fight was good, and neither fight was won conclusively.

Not much gained, even by the watchers!

But I guess Griffin is happy as hell to have two wins over a great fighter like TOney, and Toney was obviously not too bothered by the losses (not that any one holds them against him or even bring thems up really).

I saw both fights on tv as they happened and thought Toney won both and thought the first was closer than the second, if I remember correctly. In the 2nd there was a missed ruling on a knockdown I'm pretty sure though which way it went escapes me.
