Brit/IRE boxing's greatest nights 2001/2011 - Please vote!

Post by shaunundisputed »

I'm writing a series of articles on British and Irish boxing's greatest nights from 2001-2011 (up to and including Oct 15.) I'm avoiding the 90s just now because Eubank, Benn, Watson has been done to death. At the moment I have no idea where this serial may land - maybe self publish, published, magazine, website...

Anyway, I would sincerely appreciate it if you could pick your top ten fights to have taken place on British and Irish soil from 2001 to 2011. I'm going to be contacting a host of boxing writers to get them to vote as well.

The fights with the most votes will be made up into a top ten. From there I will write about them and interview every person possible who was involved with the fight, from the matchmaker to the ref to the fighters themselves.

If it takes off I'll look at doing other eras as well.

I'll keep the thread alive for a couple of weeks and let you know the results.

So if you could take the time to cast your top ten, as I said, I'd sincerely appreciate it.

Thanks

He is my favourite fights between 2001-2011. If you could have stretched back to 2000 I think this list would be better. But here goes in no particular order:

Dunne V Cordoba
Brodie V Chi I
Moore v Macklin
Froch V Pascal
Calzaghe V Brewer
Hatton V Tszyu
Maccarinelli V Hobson I
Arthur V Gomez
Neil Simpson v Hastings Rasani
Alan Bosworth v Gavin Down

Dunne - Cordoba for me. Epic fight, Dunne was a massive underdog going into the fight, nearly stopped in the fifth and was behind on all three scorecards going into the 11th round but managed to pull it off in front of nearly 10,000 home fans (including me :DD )

I've been to a lot of the fights listed about and I can genuinely, hand-on-heart, all bias aside I can say that Dunne-Cordoba is head and shoulders above any event boxing, sporting, musical or otherwise that I have ever witnessed.

Nothing comes close, it had everything bar a streaker!

A fight that always goes unmentioned when people talk about cracking domestic fights and atmosphere's is Tony Dodson v Tony Quigley at the Echo arena. Absolutely brutal fight and had an unbeleivable atmosphere, one of the best i've been to. :TU:

Some that haven't been mentioned

David Walker v Jimmy Vincent
David Walker v Spencer Fearon
Jamie Moore v Michael Jones 3
Bradley Pryce v Gavin Down
Young Mutley v Kevin Anderson

Although my favourite would be the first between Chi and Brodie, loved that fight

Thanks for that. Fine choices. Mutley v Anderson is one of my personal favourites.

Your Brodie v Chi vote has nudged that into the top ten for now.

Dunne / Cordoba was special. There was a bit of a buzz in the arena before hand but what we saw was an absolute war in front of wild crowd. The atmosphere was insane and when Dunne stopped him, capped off the night magically. Such a great night.
