Just thought I'd mention a nice old guy who I've just came off the phone to . I wrote a book on Dave Charnley recently and I got a nice letter from a man living in sheltered housing in Essex who just wanted to tell me he enjoyed the book . I phoned him back and he told me he was now 80 years old and that he had been a boxer himself . I searched him on Boxrec and he certainly was a boxer . He won 14 of his first 16 fights by knockout and his last fight was against Peter Waterman .
His name is Algar Smith . He was born in Ilford and boxed out of Stoke Newington . His memory is first class . It was a pleasure to speak to him .
Makes you feel humble , great old guys ,they really are .
Just a wee mention - you may or may not be interested ?

If you take the time out to listen to older people you realise a lot of them have great stories to tell

Nice story.
He had a good record, and won an ABA title - very impressive.
I agree Quixall - I was thinking recently that when I was a kid I used to get bored with the Uncle Albert "during the war" type stories and never really listened.
It is only now that I would like to hear them stories, unfortunately non of the people who "bored" me are around to tell them
