Is the British forum on Boxrec respected ?

This thread is being made after a post by King Geedorah on another thread.

It has been suggested that the British forum was once the "daddy" in terms of boxing forums on the internet, but King Geedorah stated that he felt it had declined to the standards of the other boxing forums in recent times and that a lot of the threads were "guff" and not worth reading. This is not a criticism of King Geedorah and i don't know if this British forum was a lot better years ago, but it is something that i have often thought about and wondered how much of a reputation this forum has in British Boxing circles and whether it is the case that the forum has declined in quality.

I personally have never boxed, but love the sport and come on here because a lot of my friends are casual sports fans and don't know enough about boxing to have a conversation at length about the sport itself or particular fights and fighters. I enjoy the fact that i can come on this forum and read posts and get into debates that extend my boxing knowledge, though i know that some people on here know a great deal more than i do. I think it's good that we have both amateur and pro boxers, trainers and the odd tv pundit come on aswell and have always found that if you express and opinion in the right manner, people will not jump down your throat if your post or thread is a little naive or off the mark.

I think we have to accept that not everybody's knowledge is at the same level and i think that a degree of patience should be shown to new posters who like i was love the sport, want to express an opinion, but in doing so may appear to lack knowledge about particular aspects of the sport that others take for granted. In this respect i think the forum will always and should be filled with a mixture of people, differing personalities, who have varying degrees of knowledge. Sometimes it is hard not to repeat what someone else has stated or to shower fresh light on a subject, but i think we will all agree that some threads are trollish in content and appear to serve no function other than to cause a bit trouble or gain some attention.

I personally think that British section at Boxrec is a great place to come and discuss all aspects of the sport

What do you guys think ? Has it declined in standards or does it still have respect and a valued place as a forum for debate ?

Only one I visit frequently.

Some very knowledgeable posters here and a good atmosphere.

Don't find that combination on many (any?) other boxing forums.

Its a great forum that's well moderated.

But like any sports forum, if there ain't much happening in the sport itself, it dips - and when the sport is full of good things happening, then it will ramp up in quality.

That's true, i have noticed that the quality of threads increases when you have up and coming fights that generate a lot of excitement.

I think as boxing forums go this is the best but the standard has dropped and I find myself reading more these days than posting. There are several posters on here who are always interesting to interact with but these days there are a lot of trolls or people posting under different names to stir things up. it is great as a fan to have a chance to mix online with people within the trade like Bomber, Glyn, Ed, Ed Robbinson, Buncey, big Larry etc but a lot of these types of poster are often put off by the grief they get. Glyn for my money has been a welcome addition to the forum
Also i don't post as much as before because I find a lot the subjects have been gone over several times.

Sometimes you want to express an opinion, but seldom can you add anything of real worth to a discussion so don't bother, but i find that it's a great place in which to try and get a consensus of opinion about a particular issue. An example of this was the Clev - Bellew fight when Parris scored the bout 117-112 and immeadiately i posted a thread because i was thinking " Is it just me who thinks that score is way out......." and in that respect it's very good. There are trolls and some debates do descend into something from the current scene, but maybe there is a tad of rose tinted glasses as to the quality of threads in the past compared to today. Put it this way Mark, i wouldn't go back to the other site that we both were involved in and i can't see me leaving boxrec to find sanctuary elsewhere, i feel quite at home here and you get to know people and their opinions.

I think the British forum is big steaming pile of donkey poo. In fact, the people on here should be locked in a cellar and fed nothing but scatter cushions. Some of the biggest culprits are leforge (a rave damaged loon) and yid14 (a plastic jew). These two should be banned from the forum and only allowed back for Fury's world title tilt. Thanks god for this new comer Karl Jade, this guy is so knowledgable and considerate towards other posters - the lad is sheer class.

The British forum on boxrec is a good place to see what's going on current and past and what the thought of other fans or fighters good or bad I think the fans who come on here who just watch the sport can give a good insight into what they think and some posters like me have a tie with certain people and think it's a good place to get people talking whether it's good or bad every1 has a opinion and it's always good to hear the good and bad criticism.. Think the forum I'n a whole is a great place to make contacts and friends I've had the chance to speak to people I probably wouldn't have been able to get I'n touch with such as steve Bunce, dean powell, Jane couch and etc. so it's a good platform for fans, fighters, promoters, matchmakers to see what the talk is and you can build interest into fights by posting and starting up discussions so definitley a respected forum!!

But if there's a better British boxing forum, please tell me and I'll visit. I go on ESB which is also good but for different reasons and has different qualities.

I had been reading the British forum for years before I joined proper around the time you first needed a password to get in and I needed to get my fix of the discussions on the Forum. Some discussions have been downright hilarious. There used to be one poster whose name I forget who just constantly asked for the reach and height of random boxers from history! That seemed to be all he wanted to discuss.

I rarely if ever use the Current Scene as I find that there is far too much goading of posters than discussion and any debate usually descends into name calling. Maybe it has changed but the British & Irish forum is the place for me.

My time on here has been full of peaks and troughs.
When its good it's excellent, when it's bad its awful.
That said it's the best.
I get frustrated when threads / posts deteriorate into slanging matches and often on issues that have fornicate all to do with boxing.
If you use your settings properly it's easy to avoid the trolls, and those with an underlying motive to have a pop just because its you thats posting, not due to the content.

eeeeeh, things were better back in my day, Carbo, Spud, Chambers, Lighstoot, Sheffieldsteel, Payne, Fennel et al were not only a good laugh and reasonably knowledgeable about the sport, but they also knew all the best dogging locations.


Go and look at some of the old threads on fight hype, for a look back into a golden period for boxing forums.

'Virgins' was clearly a term to describe Virgin users, but 'Bell End' was mainly used to describe you (quite accurate IMO)

Yep he did say it, this is what he put in another thread that is currently being read.........

It has all become a bit too ESB my liking. Boxrec's British forum used to be the daddy, you'd get a lot of people in the trade following it closely and it never usually needed defending but now falls in line with the standard criticisms that get thrown at forums. Of course it is a cyclical so will probably be worth avidly reading again at some point but I honestly skip 50% of the threads these days as it they full of bog standard guff.

Apart from my cheeky comment above, I have to say that I really like this forum. There are really good people on here, with good personalities and good boxing knowledge. It's the only boxing forum I use and I would have no reason to go elsewhere. Yes, there is the odd plank on here, but hey, that's just life.

The easy way for me to measure how good the forum is, is to think how I would feel if it got shut down. The answer to that is that I'd be gutted.

There are still some good posters around but it seems like they rarely post about boxing. You're a prime example KG, capable of improving the output on the British forum but posting nowhere near as much as you used to.

I don't need to start inflating peoples egos by listing names but there is still a solid group of around 20 British posters whose views I still enjoy reading.

The people who shout down others giving an opinion and annoy people have always been here and rarely stick around. It would just a shame if people stop posting because of it.
