Jean Claude Chanet, Fabrice Benichou. George and Tony Collins were good fighters too
yeah benichou won world and european titles, perhaps his most memorable fights being vs john davison (two very close 12 rounders).

That could be the only time I've cheered a Geordie on.

Best Irish traveller ams imo are -

JJ Nevin (2 time World Medalist) 22
Joe Ward (2 time World Youth Champion) 18
Davey Oliver Joyce (E.U Champion) 24
Michael O'Reilly (European Youth Silver Medal) 18
Gary Sweeney (European Youth Silver Medal) 17
Davey Joe Joyce (World Youth Bronze Medal) 20
Michael McDonagh (Irish Senior Champion at 17) 18

Also Joe Wards younger cousin John Joyce who is only 14 is a special talent Ive seen box once and he was going to the body like a seasoned pro stopped the lad in the first minute, he won the European Schoolboys this year and also won a medal in last years Europeans even though he was only 12 and supposedly robbed in the semis against a Russian .

Some other good pros are -
Michael Sweeney
Paddy Quinn McDonagh
JJ Quinn Mcdonagh

Buckland is a traveller? :o

We forgot Willie Casey, from a well-known Limerick traveller family, some of whom are heavily involved in crime. He's related through marriage to Wayne Dundon, the most notorious criminal in the country at the minute.

Also, Collins is a traveller name, especially in north Dublin, and Steve and Roddy Collins have the look of it. Wouldn't be too many generations removed from the wheels, maybe...
Steve was my favourite ever fighter by the way.

I know he was Irelands first ever Traveller Olympian even though he wasnt allowed to box in the local club as Travellers were barred and had to learn in a container on his site .

Ive heard he beat Ricky Hatton in the ams .

Seen plenty of Francie.

He wasnt barred from clubs. He trained in Chick Gillens gym. They did have a container on the Hillside halting site that they trained in as well.

Spoke to Gary recently - it's due in this month's Boxing Monthly.

Tony Borg, his trainer, gives some good insights on him. One of those chaps who just enjoys swapping punches and has done since he was a kid.

What about 'The Easington Road Tornado' himself Michael Hunter? Little known fact but was brought up and influenced a lot by his Uncle Little Blacky Tyers and was a regular at Appleby Horse Fairs with Blacky and his relations from a camp in Lynmouth on the auld hoss and wagon. Half his family were Travellers. Nice story about Hunter's uncle on link below:

Could be a mis print, but Gary was a tough man, he is from the New Forest. He gave Gary Stretch a good arguement when he lost his British title. And his last fight was a win over future british champ Ensley Bingham
