Re: semi pro boxing
In the UK there's no such thing as semi pro, your either amateur or a pro . I think you can have 3 pro fights and go back to the amateurs, and it may also count the boxer out of entering the ABA's, maybe someone can confirm that.
Semi pro seems to come from the unlicenced circuit, meaning these fights are not santioned by the British boxing board. And the quality and safety of these type of fights can vary greatly.

I hate it when this subject comes up as no doubt someone will make some smart arse comment that riles me .
People need to also stop painting all semi pro / white collar / unlicensed shows with the same brush .
My shows are a better nights action than most pro shows in this country , no doubt about it , people criticise the matchmaking and safety etc , well on my show youll never see a lad who won his first 5 fights fighting someone whos lost over 100 , meaning a pointless missmatch , no , they would have to face someone with a positive record someone with maybe a 4 wins 2 loss record at very worst , competitive fights are what people are always crying out for in the pros , well people like myself offer exactly that .

Not being a critic of you Damian, From what i've seen your shows are well matched and run, and i'd recommend people to your shows to fight or watch.

Think you can have 4 pro bouts and go back to Ams, but have to box am for a season on your return before being allowed to do the ABA's.Old bones Ian wrote:In the UK there's no such thing as semi pro, your either amateur or a pro . Re: semi pro boxing
Some of these so called white collar, ebf shows are the worst possible advert for boxing in this country.
Some have no weigh ins, some weigh in 3 or 4 months before the fight and that is it.
Some have opponents brought in to be bullied and knocked out.
Some do not have adequate medical cover.
Many do not have a check from any doctor at any stage.
Some are truly a disgusting advert for boxing in this country by making spurious belts up and Champions of the world, but only in their hometown.
If you like a decent street fight, go to one of these shows.

I agree some.
But that some is giving a truly bad name for those of you who want to do a decent job.
If you love boxing that much why not put on professional shows which will enable you to avoid any possible stigma or controversy.

Im going pro mate , i only do these shows to raise the money to do so , going pro as a promotor is very costly , i could buy a house for the sort of money it might cost to make a descent go of it .
Re: semi pro boxing
dose anybody no what age you have to be to do semi pro and the weight classes as iam a fly weight amuter
Re: semi pro boxing
In New Zealand they have shows that have between 2-6 pro fights and the rest corporate fights which I know is a level below unlicensed but they seem to incorparate the two. Is it not possible here? Apparantly it makes the shows alot cheaper to run as the corparate boxers don't get paid but still sell tickets. I must admit when I go to shows overthere I leave it as late as possible so I only catch the pro boxing but it really is amazing to see the amount of people who turn up just to see there mate have his one and only fight against some like minded person - often they're work aquaintences or atleast know eachother - I think they train for 3 months and then 'get it on'damianhucker1 wrote:Boxing Pirate wrote:I agree some.

Re: semi pro boxing
who did he beat ? did it end up being that pav drago ?billy bessey wrote:good point mate i often turn fights down cos they would be too easy for my lads. i went to a pro show in pompey last week with all 3-0 4-0 lads v 2-54=1 lads not good matchmaking at all(well not competitive and the bouts that were competitive the journeymen had obviously been paid to lose. For instance gents Damien had a lad that sold 100 odd tickets so if he were a pro manager(nearly all pro managers) then he would have just got a journeyman in but instead he got my heavyweight champion to come up to fight him knowing that if my lad beat him his lad could well retire or if he lost on the next show his ticket sales would drop rapidly now with the pros this very rarely happens. i ran another show today 8 fights 7 of them with 0 bout novices but because they were all well matched the feedback i have got back already is brilliant. you can fool some of the people all of the time all of the people some of the time but not all of the people all of the time and thats why mine as are damians shows as well attended as most pro shows but in most cases better received thats why prizefighter is so popular cos its 2 average lads just having a pop unlike the 6-0 v 2-54-4 lads you get week in week out on the prosdamianhucker1 wrote:I hate it when this subject comes up as no doubt someone will make some smart arse comment that riles me .

ps Dale won again today Damian looking for a decent opponent for him for the 10th december if you know anyone mate?
Im doing a small show myself same weekend but if anything comes my way that might be more suitable for dale then ill point them in your direction .

Re: semi pro boxing
Dale Bray vs Pav Drago is a very good fight , be sure to get a video of it onto youtube as the standard of that bout should be a good advert for your shows imo .billy bessey wrote:No it was a last minute stand in from London the lad done well though lasted the distance. I think hes sorted for December now Pav is meant to be coming down for it now which I really hope happens cos it's a big show and Dale wants the best his on about fighting potter/negus next year I'm not so sure about Potter but fair play to him the mans got balls
My show in december is only a small social center show , basically get the first timers etc a run out so they dont have the daunting task of boxing in front of a packed house on my main shows .
Ill be doing a prizefighter again on my next big show in Nottingham in March , not decided if its to be at Light Welter or at Heavyweight yet but if it is at Heavyweight do you think Dale might fancy a crack at it .
The Super Middleweight tournament i did in September seemed to be well received so see if i can do an even better one .
Re: semi pro boxing
This subject has been done to death now hasn't it lol. But yeah may as well give my 2 cents. Semi pro is very good in some aspects. On guy who i train with has a pro style so for him to do any amateur would negate all of his natural attributes. As for standard, some of the lads on Damien's last show looked good. The standard varies. I believe the guy that was EBF champ who has recently gone pro (Tom scott from blackpool) is meant to show a lot of promise. Nick Blackwell is another success story. I also wonder when a big story is presented that a fighter has gone pro with no amateur experience whether they have done this. The only thing many pro boxers have an issue with from who ive spoken to is the term semi pro. The pro's believe that amateur is of a better standard which i don't argue but if they are getting paid to fight then surely its some form of pro?
