Re: Pan American Games 2011
Team USA members were all one and done. Many of the boxers had tough draws. Only 3 boxers had OK draws. We needed those boxers to win those bouts. Queen Underwood and Christina Cruz both lost on tie-breakers and Danny Kelly lost 13-11.
Re: Pan American Games 2011
Cuba has 9 boxers in the semis. They haven't lost a bout. They have a few tough bouts in the semis and will have a few in the finals. Worst case scenario for them is 3 gold, 3 silver, & 3 bronze medals. Any other country would celebrate that total. I predict more like 6 gold, 2 silver & a bronze. Even 9 gold is realistic.

Re: Pan American Games 2011
Tremendous dissapointment from the US team. Not one single victory for 5 male and 3 female boxers! Of course the best american boxers weren´t here but in the past the No 2 US boxers could even win a silver.
It looks like the Yamagcuhi Falcao disqualification (low blow) was overturned and he is back in supposedly.
Dennis, was the Payares stoppage "an accident"? He was leading 7-2 after the first right?

Valera is still listed as the winner on the official website.

Re: Pan American Games 2011
Yes it is a tremendous disapointment. The whole problem started with the way the team was put together due to a grevience that was filled by a boxer that ended up not making the team anyway. The team that was supposed to go were the US Champs but after the grevience was filed a trials tournament was quickly put together that most of the top boxers could not get to due to cost and them being involved in the local golden glove tournaments that would lead to the national GG's and an Olympic trial slot that ended up not really being an Olympic Trials but a world championship trials...seems to be a pattern here. Hopefully, one day USAB will get their act together and we start to see some results again.locoxelbox wrote:Tremendous dissapointment from the US team. Re: Pan American Games 2011
Yes Payares was easily winning. It was weird. Inn the 2nd he got hit with a good punch. The pressure was getting to him and all of a sudden he got very tired. It then appeared that he hurt his shoulder and sort of quit.locoxelbox wrote:Tremendous dissapointment from the US team. Not one single victory for 5 male and 3 female boxers! Re: Pan American Games 2011
The boxers were some of the best in the U.S. However, Team USA is not giving boxers the best chance to win. They don't have the team together for any period of time prior to the tournament. They don't have long camps. They don't have the boxers in shape. They don't give the boxers ongoing international competition so that they are sharp for the big tournaments - Pan Am Games, the World Championships, and the Olympics. They didn't even send any boxers to the 2nd Pan Am qualifying tournament. USA should have had a full team at the Pan Am Games. 5 more male boxers would have increased the likelihood that a couple of boxers would have won medals.JMac wrote:Yes it is a tremendous disapointment. Re: Pan American Games 2011
Yeah it´s incredible how the US team has reduced their participation on the international circuit. I remember in the 90'ies there were the annual duals vs Cuba (until mid 90'ies), Russia and other top countries shown on ESPN. Also american teams participated regularly in tournaments in Europe and Asia. What happened and what is the USAB doing to reverse the situation?

Re: Pan American Games 2011
Oscar Molina isnt the only boxer in the Pan Ams with a US connection.Isnt Armando Pina representing Mexico here from Chicago and he is in the 178 final.
Re: Pan American Games 2011
Florentino beat Pina so Pina is not in the finals. He did get a bronze medal though.
Cuba won some tough bouts in the semi-finals. I had thought they might lose one of them. With 9 boxers in the finals, they are likely to have a minimum of 5 gold medals. Probably will be 6-8 gold and 1-3 silver. I just think they will lose at least one. If they win all 9 that will be very impressive.

From what I could find, he's a Mexican citizen and not eligible to compete for the US (except in Golden Gloves, who consistently breaks the citizenship rule.... 8) ).Isnt Armando Pina representing Mexico here from Chicago and he is in the 178 final.
Re: Pan American Games 2011
Mel, GG isn't the only one to have non-citizens in its tournaments. The National PAL has done it. USA Boxing has done it too.
