Will we see another legend fall this Saturday ???

Post by Foggy »

Just looking through the schedule for this weekends boxing and to be honest not much is happening, although we have a legend in Tommy Hearns making his comeback (god only knows why), so will we see another ring legend get beat to a pulp or does anyone have high hopes for Tommy this Saturday. Lets just pray he doesn't get seriously hurt even though he should wipe the floor with the kid he's facing.

When Hearns fought and beat Nate Miller way back in 2000 I did have some hopes for him. He was shot, but not completely shot and the Cruiserweight devision was dire - I actually was pleased he had that 6 times champion ambition cause I saw it as a real possibility. I thought at that stage he would beat Virgil Hill again who was a champion.

Now though, he just has a vacant look in his eyes everytime I see him. There looks like there is nobody home, I believe (but not sure) that Emmanuel Steward has turned his back on him - which says alot.

Perhaps Hearns will win this particular fight, but he will not progress much further.

If Hearns hadn't have been robbed against Leonard the second time... And would have retired with a record of 47-3, He'd be doing fine today, with very few problems, a good legacy, and a big bank roll.

Shame life never turns out the way it should for some people.

I can't believe they've given him a license, he can barely speak.

I have seen John Long here in Denmark vs Martin Nielsen, and Hearns should have no problem beating him.

I don't know about that, Long has a victory over legendary Reggie Strickland.

He's virtually at the stage where he CAN'T speak. Hopefully the commission did some tests, and found that he still had his marbles inside - a la Stephen Hawking (sp?).

Still don't see the point of this at all.

Unless they've agreed it'll just be an exihibition type thing, with lots of posturing and mostly jabs/playing to the crowd?

Hearns-Hawking would be a good match. Hawking has a KO win over Homer Simpson. 8)

Hearns has only come in two pounds over the Light Heavyweight limit so at least he is in good shape and won't look like a fat shot fighter, just a shot one.

I don't know if there are any pics.

Anyone know what weight he intends to fight at, seems like he can easily make Light Heavy but I don't see any point in doing that as he already has held that title twice.

I love Hearns and so I am hoping that he gets stopped or koed... or just looks so bad that he can't get another fight. The worst thing that can happen is that he koes this guy gets some people thinking of the 80s and then steps in with someone who can really fight... then we will see Tommy get hurt... not that he's in great shape as it is.

The leeches promoting this fight are probably the same people that promoted Jerry Quarrys last fight.... Jerry died at 51 after having been reduced to a vegatable more or less... meanwhile the promoters are still promoting.... no wonder boxing has such a bad name.

Really this is the worse thing that could happen... a so so win which will allow him to go on and fight someone better till he gets beaten up.
I read that Hearns was staggered in the first round himself.
Some people need to be saved from themselves and the people around them... I notice that Hearns family are involved in his comeback, just hope they don't have cause to regret this 5 or 10 years down the line... Tommy should be reminded of what happened to Jerry Quarry, Greg Page and Wilfredo Benitez....etc.

Ironically, the only way is DOWN from this win.

His attitude, and the attitude of those around him, ensure that.

The guy has been buzzed at some point in almost every fight he's ever had, and I think the next one or two hard fights he is in will accelerate his dementia to no end.

My prediction: Hearns is a vegetable by 2009.

A sick prediction and one I hope against hope that turns out wrong. Sadly unless he gets out soon you may not be. :(

What I can't understand is that how his family can't see what has happened to him already and figure out that fighting again is not going to be conductive to Tommys health. His son said in an article how Tommy has trained hard and got very fit but that is just physical fitness... we are talking about the brain here... I remember reading how Jerry Quarry was still fit and strong Physically in the early stages of his dementia and used to walk something like 20 miles a day..... but his brain was totally shot.
The bottom line here is with the commissions though... if Hearns couldn't get a license or find a promoter to pay him then he wouldn't be able to fight anymore... perhaps his family are living in denial or perhaps they are willing to let Tommy risk his remaining marbles in exchange for money and glory for all, but I can only see this as having a sad ending and it breaks my heart.
I mean from what I've seen of him in recent interviews going back the last 5 years he already seems halfway to being incompacitated are they just going to let him carry on till he can't lift his arms up anymore!... its really quite sickening!.

It's truly sickening, and all Hearns fans in the US (who are near the area) should take note of the MI Commission meeting that takes place on 15th September at 2501 Woodlake Circle, Okemos, Michigan. Turn up at 10am - it's open to the public. Let these clowns know how you feel about one of the best boxers of the 80's committing fistic-assisted suicide. Here are the men largely responsible for his future health:

Albert J. Low
James K. Sype
Douglas J. Maskin
Robert S. Watson
Rene Muniz
Bradley A. Wright
Earle L. Robinson

Don't expect intelligent boxing talk, though. Remember it was exactly a year ago we saw one of these fucknuggets exposed on C5 by Teddy Atlas immediately after that Augustus - Burton disgrace. The bloody COMMISSIONER didn't even know what a Majority Decision was!!!

You'll be surprised to learn, then, that they actually never did overturn that decision despite all that hoopla that went on.

Cowboy commissions like this lot really puts some of the crticism of the BBBoC in perspective.

Doesn't MI not actually have a proper boxing commission?

Hearns claims the speech pattern is caused by nerve damage to the face from an operation on his nose, which is possible I guess, but I have severe doubts about that. That may be what is partially causing it, but he sounds punchy as hell, there's big delays in his speech which is normally caused by a punched up brain.

I'd really like to belive that Hearns isn't punchy and that he is 100% ok but that excuse is just denial... I have lots of interviews with Hearns from about '79 to present day and if you go through them you can see a steady deterioration... as early as the second Leonard fight he didn't sound too good. In the recent BBC interview there was a long lapse of time between when Hearns was asked something and when he answered you could actually see him having to process the question... this is a definate sign of braindamage, theres no two ways about it.
Another thing I've noticed about Hearns is his face has lost a lot of expression... its become very flat and masklike which is another sign of damage.
One of the things that really alarmed me about the BBC interview was how badly Hearns had deteriorated from the last interview I saw him in back in 2000 when he fought on the Hamed bill... and he'd only fought once since then!. If he's deteriorated while being inactive what is going to happen now he is fighting again and sparring etc!!!.
My guess is Hearns is aware of the facts himself but wants to fight on regardless... which is probably the saddest thing.
I'd really like to be wrong about all this but I've seen so many great fighters go down this road that its got a horribly familiar feel about it.

They do indeed have a boxing commission. Here is their site:

http://www.michigan.gov/cis/0,1607,7-15 ... --,00.html

Compare their license requirements:

http://www.michigan.gov/cis/0,1607,7-15 ... --,00.html

to those of the BBBofC:

http://www.bbbofc.com/boxer_info.html

A bit too much seems to be based on "good moral character", IMO. What does that mean anyway? Doesn't it have something to do with tie's and school?
