2012 US Nationals
According to USA Boxing web sight the 2012 US nationals are an open tournament and you don't have to qualify through LBC or Regional tournaments. This is a first.
Re: 2012 US Nationals
It's not the only first for USAB this year. It's also the first time winning the Olympic trials doesn't mean you actually made the Olympic team and get to go to ALL of the qualifiers. There are pluses and minuses to every decision.clarkringone wrote:According to USA Boxing web sight the 2012 US nationals are an open tournament and you don't have to qualify through LBC or Regional tournaments. Re: 2012 US Nationals
At the Olympic Trials, they did not tell everyone until the draws that winning the tials would only get you to the Worlds. And that if did not quailfy at the Worlds you were out, and would have to re-qualify through the US championships. I am sure there are lawyers for 7 OLYMPIC trials champions hard at work right now.
Re: 2012 US Nationals
It was previously approved by the USOC in the US Olympic Qualifying procedures and HPP. 7 guys may be giving their money away as well. It was already in place by the powers that be and I hope that none of the guys are letting it eat at them negatively but instead pressing forward and working harder and smarter than ever before. The negative thought will only take away.clarkringone wrote:At the Olympic Trials, they did not tell everyone until the draws that winning the tials would only get you to the Worlds. Re: 2012 US Nationals
All this says is that we have no confidence in our coaching abilities as a National Staff. Why not use the time until the the next qualifier to get the current Olympic trial champions ready for that. Why was it called Olympic trials instead of world championship trials. How do we know the national champs will be ready for the next qualifier. I guess this is why we went out and got Freddy Roach because we need coaching help at the National Level. This is SAD!!! Anyone agree
Re: 2012 US Nationals
FYI - Freddie Roach has a very successful pro gym in So. California and does NOT train amateurs. I'm hoping he is good at motivating.I guess this is why we went out and got Freddy Roach because we need coaching help at the National Level.

I know his track record and I agree he's a great coach however I think we as a coaching staff can do better with this "Reload" situation. I just think the coaching staff should concentrate on getting the current Olympic Trial Champions qualified instead of reaching for other boxers. That would be a true coaching accomplishment to get all them qualified and have a full team at Olympics.
Re: 2012 US Nationals
I agree, it should of been called World Championships Trials, why advertise it as Olympic Trials, because trying to get more money from sponsors?. Spend more time with the guys who won the trials in more camps, dual and coaches who have experience in International competitions. Freddy Roach is a good motivator and a good pro coach, but no experience in the amateurs and International competitions, our purpose is to beat the computer. We have good boxers in our nation, but most of them only knows how to beat boxers in this country, not international boxers. Keep what we have, they earned their spots and take them out there to hard competition until the next qualifier. We need to invest in order to see dividens. We will be getting kids from just getting out of the juniors who are tough but with out any international knowledege and throw them to the wolfes. Am tired of all of this embarresment in boxing in the past 3 Olympics when we use to be a power house.
Re: 2012 US Nationals
Think that the Olympic team should be picked two year prior to the the Olympic games / So that we can get them more international experience ..... So if we would have taken teamusa from the 2010 National championships... I think we would have a better chance to qualify more boxer for the Olympics and also have a good show in the London ....just my opion..
Re: 2012 US Nationals
We had 3 returning Olympians from the 2008 Olympics/Olympic Qualifying Tournaments who received substantial funding from the USOC. However, how many international bouts did they compete in since the 2008 Olympics? Not many. If it weren't for the WSB, Rau'shee would have had next to nothing for international bouts from summer 2008 until the 2011 World Championships.
Re: 2012 US Nationals
USA needs to organize more international training camps and competitions for boxers. They can allow boxers to attend on their own dime and many would be willing to do so (actually through sponsorships from family, friends, and businesses). The more boxers we have who have international experience, the better all of our boxers will become. We should be doing duals and tournaments against our local neighbors - Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Bahamas, and Barbados.
Re: 2012 US Nationals
Dennis, USAB definitely needs to provide more international competition but just a quick note, Raynell Williams hasn't received any funding from USAB or the USOC since Beijing

I read the high performance plan and it said that he was.boxfan08 wrote:Dennis, USAB definitely needs to provide more international competition but just a quick note, Raynell Williams hasn't received any funding from USAB or the USOC since Beijing
Is it because the contract stipulated that he had to remain #1 to get the money? I think I remember hearing something about that.
If he wasnt recieving the money though, thats all the more reason to do what Dennis said and spend the money on international trips.
Re: 2012 US Nationals
My understanding was that Raynell received the money until mid 2009 when he no longer qualified as he didn't remain ranked in the top 4 (the semi-finalists at the 2009 USA Boxing National Championships).
We do not make good use of our available funds. Waste money on non-essential personnel traveling with the teams. We send teams overseas and don't have them train with teams from other countries. We don't have them spar with boxers from other countries while overseas. We often don't have our boxers train with the other teams when those teams come to the U.S. for competitions. We are missing out on so many opportunities. We also send boxers on international trips and have them compete in duals when we know that they have no intentions on staying amateur. STUPID!!!
If money in amateur boxing was abundant, it wouldn't matter so much. However, there never seems to be enough money in amateur boxing and then they use what they get foolishly. There needs to be wholesale changes and to focus more on growing the sport at the grassroots level.

Dennis - unless things have changed - it is my understanding that the USOC funds the elite stipend AND the monies for international competition. We do not make good use of our available funds. Waste money on non-essential personnel traveling with the teams
Re: 2012 US Nationals
The USOC only gives USAB so much money for international competitions. That is probably why USAB didn't have any money to send boxers to 2 out of the 3 Pan Am Qualifying tournaments. If they use the money the get wisely, they could send boxers to more competitions and camps.
