Nottingham show

i dont really go to many small hall shows , but my look at this show was that it was good to see Leigh wood win his debut and he was well supported , Nathan McIntosh looked good but he was against Billy Smith who in all honestly is someone Nathan should beat with ease anyway , Maybe he needs an opponent thats not so far down the journey man route so that they actually bring it , Maybe he should box Andy Hardy , the guy who terry maughan beat , Personall thought Terry Lost that fight , I reckon it was only the knockdown that kept his nose in front with the judging , Terry wont go any further than his level , limited - But it was actually the best fight of the show due to it also being the closest match up on paper , both lads wanted the knockout .

Missed the Finnegan v Tucker fight while i nipped to the loo but my friends who saw it said Finnegan should have knocked tucker out prior to be knocked out himself , but didnt move in for the kill enough .

As for Shanes fight , he was always going to beat someone like Cover and although cover was doing a lot of holding etc i think he did what he needed to in able to give himself a better chance of causing an upset , I dont think shane seemed to like Covers rough housing inside , so despite it being a scrappy fight shane may have picked up a few things as far as experience , Cover for me is a far better person to box than the billy smith types , no discredit to journeymen but they serve their purpose and Cover provides a different purpose with different problems to deal with - and 59-56 scoring for a 6 round bout , mate there cant be too much debate there , he only had shane losing 1 round , i scored it exactly the same (although did have a few red stripes down me in all honesty ----£3.50 for a can of red stripe , whats all that about , only lager they had too)

Unfortunately £30 for 5 fights , of which only 1 was an actual contest to watch its no wonder that casual fans dont go to small hall shows , it wasnt really value for money , but with ticket sellers like Shane and Leigh the crowds will usually still be brought in , Hardcores like myself wont miss boxing thats happening in the place i live , but if i was just a casual fan im pretty sure id be a bit put off , especially if i had been paying to watch 17 bouts on unlicensed shows for a price 1/3 cheaper , im sure that those who dont go to other shows and just go to support their mate / familly member will have enjoyed it , Shanes fans know how to make a bit of noise , and Clinton that wasnt you in the white top was it that was throwing every punch at ringside , the guy looked like he wanted to get in and give shane a hand , , im expecting a youtube hit there as loads of people filmed him .

Thats the way i see it as well rhys was a top aba boxer and a decent pro and still as a lot to give. i do think he needs to move to light-heavy.

I thought that as well. But he puts on two-stone of muscle between fights and every time he does that, he get further and further away from making 12'7. Rhys is another in a long-line of Midlands-based cruiserweights who wants to do a job on Williams.

But Shane will increase his chances of getting up in the mix with another win in December. Actually, going on someone you mentioned on my link last night - even though i don't think he's boxing again - i'd love to see an all-Nottingham Area title defence against Tyrone Wright. Be huge business around here, wouldn't it?

Would be a gud fight but can't see it happening they only live down the road from each other.

The show overall was decent although i felt a bit overcharged for 5 6x2 contests. If one of the 5 had been a title match then i'd have been ok with it. I remember going to a Calzaghe promotions show in newport that had Hari Miles, Bradley pryce, Gavin Rees, Jeff Evans, and Mathew Edmonds on it.
Anyways to review the show. The first bout was totally one sided. It was between Mcintosh and Billy Smith who threw no punches what so ever. I'd love to see Mcintosh against someone like Tony Pace of newport (fought ronnie heffron) to see how he reacts when someone comes to fight. Mcintosh did what he needed to do but he cant have learned or gained any experience from this and his bout on Damian's semi pro show last year probably taught him a lot more.
The second bout of the night was between Irish Terry Maughan and Andy Hardy. It's interesting to note that 4 of Irish Terry's 6 bouts have been contested in Nottingham so he has been looked after. This was fight of the night and in the first stanza Maughan rolled under a left hook and threw a right hand that caught flush. His rolls on the back foot looked quite decent although his punches were quite predictable and footwork is very basic. His chin also looks brittle. Hardy came to fight and only lost narrowly. Looking at his record it cant be long until him fighting like this is a thing of the past and he will soon adapt a more self preserving style. Overall a brilliant little tussle. Terry Maughan will probably stay at this level and if he is very fortunate pick up an Area title. That's if he is fortunate. In his favour he was very well supported. There were a few lookers in there too, and his fiance was stunning.
The third fight of the night produced the only knockout. It was between James Tucker and Jonjo finnegan. Finnegan was boxing ok but Tucker was a journeyman who came to have a go. in the first round he whipped thudding body shots but ate a few straights. In the second he slipped a straight and came back with a left hook bomb that had finnegan finished. The ref rightly called a halt to proceedings.
4th fight was Leigh wood against welshman Chuck Jones. Leigh Wood showed a great deal of potential and was very well supported. He has very quick hands and threw a lot of straight punches to keep his opponent at bay. Still has a lot of amateur tendencies but these will be ironed out in time. Although it was his debut, you could tell this lad should go on to domestic honours.
Shane Mcphilbin almost filled that place up single handed. His fans are a noisy bunch and he is a character hence why he stands out in this sport. Coming to the ring dressed in funky glasses and a top hat showed this. His opponent however was a blown up super middle, who was once trained by Ingles and didn't come to fight. All this means that he is hard to look good against. A scrappy affair, and Shane struggled to get going but in the 6th round he landed a few good ones that had cover desperate to hold. Overall a fair score card although it was generous to give Cover one.
Shane said a few weeks back he would like the irish title against Ian Tims. Thats a good progression. The english title is probably vacant now so he could go for that. Leon Williams is very beatable. Looking at shane i was thinking he could boil down to light heavy but why would he go down to a stacked division when he is in one as open as this. Interesting to not is Hari Miles lost to Enad Licina in his last outing but gave a good account of himself. Enad licina fought Steve Cunningham for IBF cruiser title 2 fights previously and lost on points. Fighting Hari would give a very good indication of just how far Shane could go.

Any more shows in nottingham in the pipeline? Hope so. If macintosh and wood want to progress they need to be out regular

Gave a crap review though , a few examples .

Leigh wood showed flashes of brilliance but his win was just satisfactory at 60-54 and he was hardly Leigh-thal . (it was his debut ffs )

Shane Mcphilbin vs Simeon Cover resembled more of an mma match than a boxing match , was terribly scrappy

it called Terry Maughan vs Andy Hardy a cracker ( i agree that it was the nights best action but was hardly a cracker , neither are hugely talented , i think it was maughans willingness to oblige to rumble with him rather than actually box that made the fight what it was but would be and almost was his downfall )

as for the other 2 fights it cant really be argued too much i guess on their points , said Nathans was a one sided affair , and said a "fading" Jonjo Finnegan was knocked out .

I enjoyed it - and though I had a press pass, I would have paid £30 for a ticket. Atmosphere was spot-on, I enjoyed every fight [though those who didn't are entitled not to] and the venue worked well, especially as it took 20 minutes from the area of Nottingham I live. Plus, three of the fights produced decent stories for me.

Was me who originally said holds around 300 , i hold my hands up to that being wrong as i counted 360 seats when i first arrived and was also a lot standing too

Overall im sure the show would be considered a success , ok like you said sometimes the fights dont hold up and end up with less fights but thats boxing , there was definately more positives than negatives anyway .

I definitely wont be promoting there till late feb early march now as i never promote in january and ive got alot of shows planned and areas to cover before its nottingham again. I thought it was a good little show not my best by all means but everyone seemed to have a good night and i would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for supporting the local fighters. carl greaves.
