jeffries the great white HW champion been retired for 6 years and u got jack johnson comin through as the HW champ (black) and white people are pissed cause johnson keeps beating all the white guys they throw at him (all the while ducking/avoiding the tough black challengers ;;-) - sorry johnson fans - it's the truth). so everyones thinkin "yeah we'll get jeffries out of retirement and get a win for the white folk!" and well as ray stated jeffries simply didnt have it anymore and the fight was a stinker.

its probably the most hyped (using terms of relativity)/historical fight after FOTC (Ali/Frazier I)
I hear you Barry but newspapers can only tell so much. One would have had to actually lived through those times to feel the magnitude of the event and the anticipation of others'.

Interesting read about jeffries btw..

Were you even around during that time? You speak as if you did..

Unless you've actually lived through those events, it's really hard to speak on it..
Not if you read the contemporary newspapers and eyewitness accounts about it, and see clippings of the fight. (It's called "research." Try it some time.)

Leonard V Benitez always disappointed me.

Monzon V Griffith II also.

Ali vs Frazier III

2 guys that used to be something, that had lost almost everything that made them great. But for the way the bout finished i found nothing at all interesting.

I think much of the disagrements have to do with personal taste. Some people don't like chess matches while others don't like "wars".
The like or dislike that people have for particular fights must certainly be a factor as well. Otherwise there is no way that some of these fights could be labeled as "sucking".

People that don't like "chess matches" probably aren't going to like Benitez-Leonard. (Though it had a few fireworks). I liked it because of the skill level and the strategy and tactics.

Other people don't like "wars" probably won't like Ibeabuchi-Tua or Gatti-Ward. I liked the Gatti-Ward because you had two guys giving it there all, and using the talent that they did have. No they weren't legends, but they were certainly weren't tomato cans either.

For me , I love variety and different types of fights. A fight between 1 or even both guys that I don't like can still be great to watch.

Some awful shouts on this thread.

Ali Frazier 3? Hearns Hagler?

I suspect people are being all interesting and controversial just for the sake of making an impact.

That could be another reason why some of these are on here. It is hard to justify those two, Norton-Holmes and a few others.

If you think Holmes Norton sucked, then your benchmark for what represents good boxing is VERY very poorly calibrated. IMHO.

Not saying it was the best, but for those in the seats, and for the millions who watched it live, it was pretty damn riviting. Both men gave what they had, and they represented arguably the best of HW's for that moment.

LOL at fresh hold, pretty ironic that it comes in a condescending post about others understanding. But I definitely wasn't in Zaire. I'll give you that. Of course I never said it wasn't a great event or accomplishment. It's just an overrated fight that has been replayed to death.

lol  not my intention to be condescending.

you saying how ali soaked up the body shots wasnt pretty amazing???

i think big george regaining the world title as a big old slouch speaks volumes of how a young foreman once was.

Sure, I can only comment on my own feelings. I thought it was sloppy and a tad dull as far as replay value goes. Even the KO is uninspiring for me. Though the atmosphere was awesome. It's like Holyfield/Tyson for me where what happened was way greater than how it happened.

You can add Foreman-Moorer to the list. Average fight, historic finish and an amazing achievement by the old man.

I love watching the entire Holmes-Norton fight . . great swings in momentum, great boxing/stamina displayed, and the last 3 rounds are as good as any HW championship fight in history.

Another Ring FOTY I think was not deserving at all was Zale-Cerdan. The fight is pretty much a one-sided thrashing, and besides seeing the great skills of the frenchman I don't see the appeal in seeing a past-it veteran like Zale just stand in there and get beat around round after round.

Ha, I'll throw another oddity. Tyson-Spinks. Of all the first round KOs I'd like to rewatch or show somebody, this ranks near the bottom. This fight was all about the hype and buildup leading up to it, but the KO shot isn't even that great. Spinks clearly wanted to cash his check and go home.

My first thought upon reading the title of the thread was Holyfield-Foreman. They've shown that fight so many times over the years and it always annoyes me how boxing writers and critics think it was so entertaining and whatever.

I really found it a disappointing bout when i first viewed it and never saw the reason for it getting replayed so often, and highly regarded as a so called classic battle or whatever.

I guess a few others that maybe didnt so much suck but were at least quite disappointing would be...

-Chavez - DeLaHoya (just a sad,ugly and methodical beatdown,terrible style matchup) :(
-Lewis - Morrison (No aggression from Morrison whatsoever,no left hooks, would've preferred seeing Morrison lose brutally in the 1st round if he had at least thrown some legit left hooks and shown some fierce tenacity, instead he just looked like a little lamb overmatched against a bigger lamb ? )
-Leonard - Camacho (Talk about laymest of the lame ! This was a mega time disappointment. Leonard pulls his ankle and is left a sitting duck trying to ropa a dope camacho ? :-?
-Quarry - Chuvalo (I think this would have to be king of the list. It would'nt be so bad if they had had a rematch. Quarry was boxing so nice and then gets dropped, gets up at 3 or so,then is told to stay down and wait out the count and misstakes the refs count and accidentely gets counted out. That fight always made me cringe. Quarry would've won by ud,and they probably would've rematched then. Very Strange they never had a rematch. :geek:

It get what you're saying.

The occasion was way better than the actual fight.

I've long said that if the fight had been between 2 less celebrated fighters, nobody would have mentioned it since April 7th 1987.

I thoroughly enjoyed that fight, a very satisfactory result.

Unsatisfactory result for sure but even as a big Quarry fan I did not think he dominated the fight at all. He was ahead after a fast start but Chuvalo was coming on and the fight was reasonably close when it ended. Given Quarry's stamina problems I would not have been surprised if he had dropped a decision had he not missed the count.
