Andrew Selby

Post by dewipowell »

What are everyone's thoughts on his situation?

I'm not going to go overboard because we all knew the situation before the world championships. But I find it baffling how he can win a European gold, a world silver and he's now ranked no.2 by AIBA yet he's still not in the Olympics and has to have a 3 fight 'box off'. Yafai is a good fighter but hasn't had the achievements Selby has, Selby's met 99.99% of requirements yet he's still not in the Olympics?!?!

I think its shocking that Selby has got to have a best out of three box off with Yafai,he won the Euros this year&lost in a world final by a point, hes proved better than Yafai in every tournement this year, but as John Dennen said to me on twitter they both knew that if they didnt win the worlds there would be a box off..Hopefully Selby is victourious&justice is done...

Yafai has beaten him twice before I believe.

Don't underestimate Yafai's previous acheivements. World Cadet Champion. Medalled all over the place, and lost to the Cuban in the previous Olympics.

Will be an interesting Box-Off :box:

Im not saying it wont make a good fight, but Yafai shouldnt be giving the chance,Hes had two chances this year&Selby has done much better in the Euros&Worlds&its not as if Selby had easy draws either...

But that's not how qualification works. There are very specific criteria laid down and, despite his achievements, Selby is yet to secure his own place. Once both Selby and Yafai secured places in the last 8 at the worlds, they both knew only winning the title would be enough to secure the place. It's unfortunate, but the criteria was pretty clear. If Selby is good enough, he should beat Yafai.

Yeah, it's one of those things - those were the rules. As it turns out, it's just so happened that he's done everything BUT qualify.

On the face of it it looks unfair but I'm sure it was unintentional.

Hope the better man wins the box off. :TU:

Yafai lost to the American Warren, who im sure Selby would beat...Would there be any betting odds on these fights? I think the only reason there was talk of a box off if neither won the worlds is because Yafai is one of the faces for 2012&on alot of promotion clips&the GB selectors didnt think Selby would have the year he has had..Also i think Selby should have been the boxer of the year&not Joshua...
