The North East needs a boxing hero..

Post by dondada »

Now Newcastle United are doing well, Wrists has to channel his negative energy into something else

Seriously though, a good read (especially if you come from this neck of the woods):

Good read that was! :TU:

I remember back in the 1980s that the north east always produced good domestic heavyweights and I remember Horace Notice going up there to box Paul Lister for the British and Commonwealth titles, Lister was a good boxer, fit, decent record but wasn't much of a puncher and was brushed aside easily by Notice who was approaching world class, but if I remember the fight (it was shown in the Granada region on the 'fight night' series) it was in front of a packed audience and Lister was cheered to the rafters.

In fact, blame Notice as he also walloped Dave Garside who went down to cruiserweight and scored some really good wins in that division. Who remembers John Westgarth who took Steffen Tangstad to a split descion for the EBU title in Denmark and Stewart Litgo who went to Australia to annex the Commonwealth cruiserweight title. The North East has produced some good big men but the fighters who had the most success (with the notable exception of Glenn McCrory) were Hardy (robbed in his fight vs Canizales) and the Feeney brothers.

I think once the North East start producing more Tudor crisps and Tyne Brand pies - like in the good old days - then the fighters will reappear! :box:

One is Newcastle and the other Sunderland so it makes sense and should get press also off the back of Travis beating Groves as an amateur and Jefferies Olympic medal. plus both guys can fight and it would huge if pushed right in that part of the world, stick them on the same build before they fought on the day of or eve of the derby
Jeffries is a waste of time, he spends more time on Twitter and doing fashion shows than in the gym.

Disagree - he has based himself in the US, away from all that he knows. Hardly the actions of a timewaster.

As the article suggests we have a lack of heroes in the North East, the ones who may become one like Jeffries should get our backing

He came back from the US, looked worse than he did before he went, Maloney read him the riot act live on TV. He's going nowhere in the pro ranks.
