Darchy on free to air?

Post by Grant »

I must have dreamt it cos it's not on here as a topic. But no it's real Vic darchinians on 7 mate.
I was taken aback when part of the story stated that the last overseas world title fight containing an aussie was fammo vs saldivar in 1970. I remember that.

I seem to remember Tony Mundine fighting Carlos Monzon on free to air TV (there was no other kind) in Buenos Aires. Argentina on October 5, 1974.

The Dib and Lo Porto fights apparently on Fox, as Andy Raymond said per last telecast on Fox.

But this is even better.

Hungry boxing champ Vic Darchinyan believes he can win a record tally of world title belts by the end of next year.

IBO bantamweight champion Darchinyan is gunning for title belt No.9 next month when he fights Panama's WBA bantamweight super champion Anselmo Moreno in California.

The big-hitting southpaw couldn't find room on a table to accommodate all of his belts on Friday, when it was announced the Moreno fight would be shown on free-to-air television station 7mate.

While the proliferation of organisations and the legitimacy of some of the title belts of the less recognised ones has made records hard to claim, Darchinyan is convinced he is closing on one.

"I think the most belts, Oscar de la Hoya won 10 world titles, I have eight belts, I am chasing more," Darchinyan said on Friday.

"I'd love to have three more belts, that's my goal, that's what I'm going for.

"I want to have three more belts and I become No.1 in the history of boxing.

"After retirement I want to be someone that people are going to talk about, remember me, everyone is going to mention my name."

Darchinyan thinks he can attain the landmark by the end of 2012 by beating Moreno and having two more title bouts next year.

He is determined to move up to super bantamweight in 2012, but could stay at bantamweight after the Moreno fight if there is a chance to unify the division.

"I will go to super bantamweight 100 per cent next year," Darchinyan said.

"If before I can fight unification of the bantamweight world titles I can collect all belts here and become undisputed world champion, I'd love to do it.

"If someone challenges me for a unification, I will wait, if not I'll move further up in weight.

"Jorge Arce has become a world super bantamweight world champion.

"When I fought him the first time, he told me 'I want a rematch with you'.

"I told him 'anytime you have a belt, I'd love to fight you'."

Darchinyan was excited at the potential to broaden his fan base and expand acknowledgement of his achievements by fighting on free-to-air.

"People don't know about me in Australia, they will see me on free-to-air and they will start to talk about me," Darchinyan said.

"It's nice to be free-to-air here and I'm looking forward to knocking out my opponent.

"I'm happy he's never been knocked out, because I'm going to knock him out.

"I'm very focused for this fight and I'm going to show my best."

Fox is cable, not free to air.

Both those fights were in Australia. Fenech/Shingaki in Sydney, Ellis/Sequenan in Melbourne. 26 April 1985.

I remembered reading about Sequenan in Lester's book and had a vague memory of Fenech fighting Shingaki in Sydney, I checked with Boxrec and it confirmed it.

Does anybody know if Vic has been sparring with Biko? I am trying to think of another reason that Sakio is fighting an 8 rounder with a ham and egger named Contreras on the same card.
