I only ever saw him get stopped by Michael Spinks and that was years ago so I was wondering if anyone here had anymore memories of the big Norwegian fighter.
Looking at his record he must have had some ability as he drew with the young Tyson slayer Buster Douglas and beat the likes of Joe Bugner, Ken Lakusta, Lucien Rodriguez, Alfredo Evangelista and John Westgarth but also got stopped by the big Swede Anders Eklund.
He was quite a busy slugger type... not very big... I remember his bout with Bugner and Joe should have won really but seemed out os shape and was outhustled. Spinks looked pretty good stopping him.
I'd say he was an above average European 80s heavy, which would make him about an average 80s heavyweight on a world wide scale. He never deserved the titlefight vs. Spinks though, as his 4th round stoppage against Spinks suggested.
After retirement he worked as a boxing commentator for Norwegain TV, then later tried his luck as a promotor and manager. His promotional company, Modern Sports & Events, went bankrupt in 2004 and he has kept a low profile since.
Lets set things straight.
He first was a commentator for the scandinavian TV station TV1000 (Viasat).
He was never a promotor. He was the director of the viasat backed Modern Sports & Events, but the promotor in that firm was Gert Bo Jacobsen. They first held a few cards in Denmark but didnt have any real succes, biggest card was Harry Simon vs Armand Krajnc. They they promoted a few cards in Finland most of them on the island of Aaland which is close to Stockholm.
In 2003 or 2004 Viasats motherorganization, MTG, pulled the backing for MSE so they had to let go of the MSE fighters. They did not go bankrupt just closed down.
The most wellknown fighters were Thomas Hansvoll, Paolo Roberto, Samuel Kebede, Ahmed Kaddour and Christian Bladt.

Just out of interest was there any specific reason Michael asked Leon for advice about fighting Tangstad?
Had Leon and Tangstad sparred or fought each other as amateurs?
