Youngest middleweight champion?

Post by Grimm »

From my understanding it was Al Mccoy but I recently heard James Toney say it was him in an interview?

Any reason to this?

McCoy was born on October 23, 1894. He won the middleweight title on April 7, 1914 when he stopped George Chip in the 1st round.

Toney was born August 24, 1968. He won the vacant IBC middleweight title on June 27, 1990.

You do the math . . .

I understand this but I was wondering what would lead Toney to say this. Like maybe McCoy won an unofficial title or something

Maybe he was referring to chronological age, factoring in emotional and mental maturity, creating a unique "statistical curve" which he and other "social/mathematical authorities espouse as being the real "litmus test" for assessing one's true age. Attempts to use this approach have been reported in certain legal proceedings.

.....I'm just sayin'.......he's quite a thinker that one.

Yes, I'm told that, at an early age, Toney had to decide between as career as a professional boxer or a nuclear physicist . . .
