Angulo really blew himself out in that first round attack, his punches seemed so much slower than Kirklands. Hats off to the american though, he came through some big punches to win.
I'd like to see him fight Alverez, just for what might happen in the 1st round!!

Great fight. Angulo was spent after that first round. Impressed with how Kirkland broke him up. As Ians just said stick him in with Alvarez.

As I was watching the 1st round I was thinking that if this was in a British ring with a British ref - Kirkland would never have had the chance to comeback.
Great fight

EDIT After watching the McEwan fight it seems its not just British refs that are prone to premature stoppages!

Brilliantly brutal fight although it did become a bit of a one sided beatdown. Angulo took some brain shaking punishment..
What about Kirkland he is a real powerhouse at the weight, sweet skills too.

Yep, there are far too many trigger happy refs around that would have stopped the fight when Angulo had Kirkland backed up against the ropes after the first knockdown.the patriot wrote:As I was watching the 1st round I was thinking that if this was in a British ring with a British ref - Kirkland would never have had the chance to comeback.

Fantastic fight.
He is a beast when he wants to be and the fact that he has a shaky chin will always make his fights good to watch.Final round wrote:Brilliantly brutal fight although it did become a bit of a one sided beatdown. Angulo took some brain shaking punishment..

Sensational round, surely that's not gonna be topped in 2011 - reminded of Corrales/Castillo - Kirkland proved he's the new Nigel Benn there, amazing comeback. He's been knocked over 5 times as far as I know, always in the 1st round (?) it's like he gets caught cold early, then warms up and holds a shot better. Though he really got clipped by Angulo in the 1st. Another ref could have easily turned that into 2 1st round losses for JK and pretty much finished his career.

It just goes to show that giving the guy a chance to fight on can be the right decision.
Kirkland would have been stopped 9 times out of 10 in a british ring. He took far worse than Smith did.

Not for me, smith's legs had gone completely and whilst angulo was throwing the kitchen sink, not a whole lot was landing and Kirkland was looking solid. More like Haye v Thompson in the first 2 minutesforcefraser wrote:It just goes to show that giving the guy a chance to fight on can be the right decision.

There are not too many refs who, in a British ring, would have let Kirkland get through that first round.Lenny wrote:Not for me, smith's legs had gone completely and whilst angulo was throwing the kitchen sink, not a whole lot was landing and Kirkland was looking solid. Re: MUST WATCH FANS FIGHT - Alfredo Angulo vs James Kirkland
I agree and I was fearing the worst when the ref started warning Kirkland of a stoppage. He was defending against a blitz, did all the right things and came back with just enough punches to stop the ref from jumping in.
I actually had a feeling Kirkland would land something on Angulo whilst he was wide open and emptying the tank and turn it around. I certainly didn't think Angulo would fail to get his second wind though and full credit to Kirkland for being intelligent after that first round. Keeping his punches accurate and tight with his guard kept high never gave Angulo a chance to swing the fight again and proved a lot more effective than going all guns blazing whilst looking for the quick stoppage.

Anyone know if Sky are going to be showing this again?
Re: MUST WATCH FANS FIGHT - Alfredo Angulo vs James Kirkland
Wow! Angulo's heart must have been completely broken after the first round!
