Re: Joe Frazier has died.
He will forever be one of my favorite fighters and this is a tough one to swallow. Maybe Joe wasn't the greatest fighter, but he was for one night and on the grandest stage that Boxing may ever have he produced his best stuff and absolutely whipped Muhammad Ali's ass. Nobody can ever take that away from him.
And good for Floyd for footing the bill and saying the Frazier family has suffered enough.
RIP Champ, there has to be Boxing in heaven and I got $50 on you against Dempsey tomorrow night.

Re: Joe Frazier has died.
A class act, between & beyond the ropes, & unquestionably one of the greats of his division. Human beings just werent meant to be as tough as Joe Frazier was. Theyll have two dates on Joe's headstone...
1944-2011, & 8th March, 1971.
The interesting thing is the very next ex-champ to go will likely be his old nemesis.

Very sad to hear of this loss. I wonder why he chose not to go the liver transplant route?.....these days much can be done. My guess is that he simply was not a complainer, and didn't even tell anyone of his suffering until it was way past the time anyone could help. He sort of struck me as someone who would operate under that retro ethic. He may have only recently had his cancer confirmed, but he probably had if for quite sometime. Just like the way he popped back up when Big George clocked him square, he probably just got back up every day and simply "battled back" despite the rather profound and unusual suffering that this particular cancer can create, once it reallly latches hold. I know he was doing promotional appearances as recently as a few weeks ago which in hindsight is flat out astonishing that he could have possibly found the energy.
I met him, he was a gentleman, and you recognized a great soul when in his presence. I find the world less complete and a bit more of a desolate place without him.

Re: Joe Frazier has died.
For some reason, my mind keeps coming back to the words of Wilson Mizner, who uttered, upon hearing of Stanley Ketchel's death,"
"Tell 'em to start counting ten over him, and he'll get up."

Planet Earth now contains one less man.
That might not have meant so much in Joe's time, but we seem to be a dying breed.

Re: Joe Frazier has died.
This is very hard to swallow. One of the greatest fighters in history, pound per pound, and definately a top 10 all-time great heavyweight. He may not be the greatest heavyweight, but when it comes to grit, determination, heart and desire, there was no fighter around at any weight class that could have matched him in that area. Smokin' Joe was #1 and in the biggest and most anticipated fight of all-time, he whupped the great Muhammad Ali in probably the greatest performance of the last 40 years. Nobody could take that away from him.
Goodbye champ. Rest in peace. You will always be in our hearts. You will never be forgotten in this forum.

Re: Joe Frazier has died.
You'll be sadly missed, champ. I still remember riding the school bus home from 2nd grade in early 1971, and having a raging debate amongst us boys about the upcoming championship fight. Ours was a hardscrabble, blue-collar midwestern town, so the "Frazier"s greatly outnumbered the "Ali"s.

Though granberry claimed photos such as these are "hidden" "banned" and "unavailable" I find them easily accessible. And a testament to what only one man ever accomplished. Defeating Ali in, or close to his prime.BoxBuzz wrote:

Ali was far from his prime surely when he fought Joe the first time. :??BoxBuzz wrote:Though granberry claimed photos such as these are "hidden" "banned" and "unavailable" I find them easily accessible. Please, let's not go there in this thread. Joe was a great fighter with a great career, the highlight of which was beating Ali in the FOTC.Srebmun wrote:Ali was far from his prime surely when he fought Joe the first time. :??
Re: Joe Frazier has died.
It was a question - I wasn't knocking or anything, thus the question mark, I love Frazier and everything about him as a fighter. A thread is a thread is a thread and it was a valid question to a pretty solid statement. The Great John L wrote:Please, let's not go there in this thread.
