Two boxing tragedies this week
1) Death of the great Joe Frazier
2) Stark realisation that unless the sport is given a much-needed marketing and PR injection we may never, ever see a period like the one he fought in again
Let me know what you think guys.....

Nice piece, though I'm not so convinced that Frazier would have walked through the Klitschkos. You only have to look at the fits that Foreman gave Smoking Joe due to his superior size and strength to see that it wouldn't necessarily be as straightforward as you portray.
Don't get me wrong, he's obviously the technically superior fighter, but I really think the Klitschkos would present problems for any heavy in history due to their size and athleticism.

Fair point mate...
I think a peak Joe would have beaten both, though I did have a couple of seconds of doubt in putting that
...stuck with it as feeling nostalgic

Good article. I feel as long as those running the sport continue to do so in the way that they do then it'll never improve.
Obviously the Klitschkos have all the physical advantages over Joe, and even more so than Foreman did, but I don't see Wlad letting his hands go to take Joe out early like Foreman did. And if he didn't do this then I'd fancy Joe - with Wlad discovering that he'd never faced anyone like Joe before.

I agree Hook...........
Nice succinct little article and you made all the salient points. As Deserter said, the Klitschko's would have been competative in most era's purely because of their size and athleticism, but i know roughly the point your trying to make and i agree with you.

Its not just the way boxers from the 70's boxed. It was also the personality of them that helped.
And now we don't really have that many guy who are media friendly, Vitali and Vlad are now more relaxed into it, but still don't quite have it.
