DAVE 'BOY' GREEN VS COLIN JONES

Post by silkov »

:o ...I think this would have been a humdinger! :box: ...Green the faster starter, throwing more punches against Jones, a bit of a tortoise but when he got going he could knockout an opponent with either hand!.
I find it hard to pick a winner here... Green would build a strong lead but could he survive Jones onslaught in the later rounds?..... Jones probably had the better chin and defence and perhaps his stamina would take him to a late rounds ko victory over Green.
I've always thought that Colin would have won the world title had his fights with Mccorry been over 15 rounds..... :box:

I think this would be a great fight to watch. I agree with you, Jones would slowly get better as the fight progressed and would eventually wear Dave down over the 15 and maybe win a behind on points TKO.

I remember watching Dave Green on the TV show Supertsars as a kid (I think he won) he was a bit of a hero and always seemed like a good bloke.

I thought Jones McCrory were 15 rounds? I'll have to check.

No it was 12, you were spot on... :TU:

Jones was unlcuky in those fights with Mccrory. I felt they could have gone either way. Then he ran into a peaking Curry. wasn't the cut against Curry on the bridge of his nose?

Yeah Curry was at his best against Jones and cut him up pretty bad... Jones had a badly cut eye as well as the split bridge of his nose which was very nasty.
Shame there was never a 3rd fight between Jones and Mccrory.
Interestingly I saw Jones in a doc talking about the Milton fights and he said that the first one could have been in London but they decided to take it in Lasvegas because it was more money... I'm sure he would have got the first fight had it been in London!......

Totally agree on this. The "Fens Tiger" was a likeable guy but I think Jones was too strong late on for him.

Speaking to my Managing Director recently, he is a big rugby fan/player.

He was down in Wales for an international with Scotland and a conversation in the bar had one of his mates who played in the second row or something, big guy built like a brick shit house anyway he was challenging ppl to take him down.

The bar man pointed to the skinny little guy in the corner and said he'll take you out cold for a pint.

The macho rugby guys went yea right. The skinny guy got up hit him ONE hit on the chest and put him through the swing doors.

After that fight Curry really arrived. He blew McCrory away and I rememebr all the talk abotu him moving up to beat Hagler. i thought all of thsoe saying Curry was the best p4p in the world at the time were wrong. Marvin had to sweat blood for that mantle and they wanted to give it to Don after that fight when Milton wasn't even on the same planet as Hearns.

I remember when Honeyghan beat Curry. It was coming on TV sunday night and the fight was on Saturday. I avoided the result, then turned up to play football on the afternoon and my friend ran in shoutign "Honeyghan beat him!" I was pleased with the result but choked that he'd given the result away.

Honeyghan blew it in the fight with Starling. He just fought totally the wrong fight, and played right into his hands.

If you were a supporter of any other Welsh Rugby club (other than Swansea) a few years back and your team were playing Swansea you would all be singing "Colin Jones, Colin Jones, Colin Jones" (to the tune of "Here we go") becuase Colin flatterned Swansea legend and former Wales Captain Richard Moriaty - all 16 stone of him. One clean punch.

Jones vs Green would have been a thriller but I feel the Welshman would have been the favourite.

I know a large band of people (I've seen the fight and I'm not one though) who still think Colin would have beaten Curry if he hadn't sustained that damage to his nose - he was distraught when the fight was stopped - much like McCullough two weeks backs. "He's not hurting me at all" and "I'm just getting going" was what he was saying in his tears. Many believe him, I personally think Curry had another level, but he wouldn't have KO'd Jones - but won decisively on points.

I think Curry would still have beaten Colin inside the distance... he was cutting Colin up... Colin had a badly cut eye as well as the nose and it would only have got worse. Really Colins style was made for Curry, he was too stationary and Currys handspeed was a big factor. Colins best chance would have been to come out fast and bull Curry around much like Honeyghan did... this was the way to beat Curry, but Colin was always a slow starter and looked sluggish and slow against the Cobra... it wasn't the Jones who had fought Mccorory imo.
The Jones who fought Mccrory would certainly have done better against Curry.
Its a shame Colin came along when the title fights had been reduced to 12 rounds as he seemed a natural 15 round fighter and would have done better probably in the 15 round era.

Green was a BUM!! Another example of a British fighter. He lead with his head/chin. Ray Leonard destroyed him. Dave "Boy" Green was nothing but a barstool club fighter at his VERY best. :box: :box:

I agree with what someone else said about Jones being too strong for Green.

Jones was a viscous hitter with either hand and he had to be one of the more unlucky fighters when it came to world title bouts. Both fights versus McCrory were close with McCrory boxing early and piling up points and Jones coming on strong at the end. The first round knockdown that Jones suffered in their second bout was seemingly the deciding factor as the scoring was extremely close, hell it was very close in both bouts.

Then Jones had the misfortune to face a peaking Donald Curry who landed something like four, or five to Jones' one. If I recall correctly the cut, which was on the bridge of the nose, required eight stitches to close. I couldn't image what his face would have looked like had the bout went the full 15.

With respect Barry I find that a bit rich coming from you as I've seen you get into arguments with plenty of people on this forum and generally arguments a lot worse and long running than this!. Or does being a mod mean theres one rule for you and another for everyone else.
I've been coming on this forum a long time and generally get on with everyone ...Ringsider made an idiotic comment which I felt obliged to reply to just as you replied to people who said same type of comments to you.
If you don't want these spats then stop ringsider making his dumb comments on threads which are only designed to wind people up and ruin the whole thread.
Also I find it ludicrous that you deleted my last mail while keeping all the crap that ringsider wrote.... whats going on here???>....... are you going to delete this too?...

You're little holier-than-thou rant sounded the same in the other thread, but like I said in it...go back and read this thread again....Ringsider gave his opinion of Green, which you obviously did not like so you call him an idiot and start the childish name-calling argument. Yeah I do get into arguments, but the one thing that is being elimintated is calling people names, which I don't do anymore, so if you don't like someones opinion...don't respond to it...I nicely asked for you two to be civil, yet you felt the need to post another insult about Ringsider and pretty much to ignore what I asked, which I deleted the post instead of giving you a warning like I should have, but that was my mistake...it won't happen again!

So calling a fighter a 'bum' is constructive criticism is it?.

So this is the first time that you have heard a fighter called a bum...that's even more interesting...I guess you never have called a fighter anything derogatory though...right?

New stance on the forum rules, as it has been posted on the current scene for a couple of months now, targeted mainly toward showing one other respect: In case you missed it...

Forum Members,

Recently many members of the forum have been requesting that something be done to clean up the forum. I have always been a major proponent of free speech, but the manner in which the forum has transgressed has gone far beyond free speech and insults, racist remarks and just complete nonsense is commonplace and consistently an everyday thing. I’m not trying to sit on top a high horse as I know that I have been just about as bad as some of the worst that we’ve ever had, but I’m glad to clean up my act and others will need to do the same thing.

Boxrec has become a very important part of the boxing world and people look upon the database of records with much respect and we need to have the same kind of professionalism in moderating the forums as well. A lot of people are turned off by the forums and it’s time that we take care of the problem.

The main issue that everyone needs to comply with is respect. Show each and everyone the exact same respect that you would like to have your self. No racist remarks will be tolerated. Bad language, well there is nothing against using bad language, but try to use a certain amount of discretion. Basically, all of the rules that have been in place from the start remain the same, but now people need to take heed because they are going to be enforced. Any person that does not want to comply will first receive a warning on the forum, second the person will receive a warning on the forum and a PM, third time the person is gone…no ifs, ands, or buts. There can and will be exceptions to the rule as in some cases the person may be banned after one warning.

This is a forum to talk about boxing, not to air out one another’s personal issues between forum members, so if you want to bicker between one another, find another location, or in the least send PMs, but if someone contacts a moderator because a person is threatening with violence, well that most certainly will not be tolerated. There was talk of an off-topic forum, but at the moment an off-topic forum will not be started…perhaps in the future, but right now there are other matters to deal with.

Good debate and discussion is what we want to see. No one has to agree with anybody, but keep it civil and do not regress to name calling if someone proves you wrong, or serves up a better argument. We are all linked by the fact that we love the sport of boxing, so let’s try to make the place more of a brotherhood instead of a Hatfield & McCoy like place.

Also, before starting a new thread, please do a quick and simple search because more than likely, a topic has already been covered already.

Please respond with any kind of questions on this thread.

Ringsider can you let us have a copy of that Benny Leonard v Sandy saddler tape that you claim to have?
Where I have I said I have a tape of that fight? Can you show me? I said I have seen clips of the fight on the TV.

If you have problems with reading and memory that is OK, but please do not misquote or try to give me credit for things I have never said...... :TU:

Me have problems with memory???. My memory is just fine, please ask my nurse!. Dear Ringsider I fear this may come as a shock to you but Benny Leonard was a Lightweight champ in the '20s while Saddler was Featherweight champion in the 40s and despite them both having long careers they never did meet in a fight in the ring... save perhaps for a fight of Saddlers that Benny may have refereed... I'll get back to you on that one!.
If I can be of more help for you in learning about boxing please feel free to let me know!.
Love and kisses.... Peace!...
