Lamon Brewster vs Frank Bruno. What If?

Post by KOJOE90 »

If Frank Bruno was around in his prime today and it was Big Frank and not Luan Krasniqi who was challenging Brewster for the WBO title in September who do you think would win?

Frank Bruno was a powerfull, big hitting Heavyweight with bags of heart and a very good jab?

But Brewster appears to be a little better than many of us first thought and wethered the storm against Wladimir Klitschko another big, powerfull Heavyweight and stopped him.

But in his next fight struggled to beat Kali Meehan a fighter in my opinion a level below Frank Bruno.

Would Brewster have the chin to see him through the early rounds and come on strong in the second half of the fight to wear down the tiring muscule-bound Bruno?

Or would Bruno be able to use his strength, power and Jab to dominate Brewster like he did for a while against Lennox Lewis and the unpredictable Oliver McCall?

What do you think fight fans??? :box:

Joe..

Many years before Lamon Brewster was losing to fringe contenders and journeymen like Clifford Etienne & Charles Shufford, and knocking out a near 40 yr old Golota, Frank Bruno was blasting out Gerrie Coetzee, outpointing Oliver McCall, and hanging tough with all time greats liek Lenox Lewis & Mike Tyson.

Add opponents like Tim Witherspoon, Bonecrusher Smith, Carl the truth Williams and crew to the mix, and its pretty obvious that despite bumping off a long list of bums, Bruno was on a completely different level to Lamon Brewster.

Bruno would have annihilated Etienne, Shufford, Golota, and Meehan, probably in one night. Big deal Brewster outlasted Wlad Klitschko, Bruno would roll right over Little Klit.

This is a complete mismatch.

OR-No-one will argue that Bruno didn't beat or fight the much better competition.

BUT

styles make fights. Brewster is tough and durable with punching power. Bruno was slow and could tire badly late in a fight. Those facts combined show that Lamon would have a chance. Bruno was a pretty good big man with lots of power and lots of heart, but he was no great.

I say Bruno by decision but mismatch this is not.

No offense intended gentleman, but Frank Bruno was never that respected on this side of the Atlantic. True he did have an impressive list of knockout victims, but despite what two posters maintain, I do seriously question his heart. I remember Bruno's debut on American TV when he faced a relatively unknown Bonecrusher Smith. Bruno was on his way to a one sided decision when he wilted in the final round under Bonecrusher's first offensive of the fight. Then a year later he faded badly and was knocked out in front of a home crowd by a very out of shape Tim Witherspoon. In fact one boxing magazine over here had a photo of Bruno moments after his loss that was remarkable for it's irony. A man with an impressively muscular physique lying against the ropes, while another man with visable rolls of flab stands with his arms raised in victory. Kinda looked like Mr Universe had just gotten knocked out by the Pillsbury Dough Boy.

So I won't make any enemies though, I think Bruno would stop Brewster after a few knockdowns inside of 3.

What if what? Both fighters are tomatoes. The british have never had a good heavy weight, and never will. They imported negros, then adopt them, and try to say they are British.   :TU:

What are you talking about? There is no bash of anything in there. Just my opinion of how the Brits always try to adopt whatever fighter happens to show up on their shores. Then the britts try to pass the obviously non british fighter off as one of their native sons.........Why? Because they are so hard up for real fighters. Heck look at them talking about Dave "Boy' Green as if he were something special!! He was a club fighter, a "ham & egger".

Freddy Roach had more talent than Green.  But you don't see this side of the ocean idolize him as a great fighter. :TU:

Back to the original post.

I also think Big Frank would have blasted Brewster inside a couple of rounds.

The only thing Lamont has in his favour is Frank did lack confidence in his own ability late on. If he didn't finish the fight early he lost confidence in himself.

10 rounder against Bonecrusher, Bruno 9 rounds ahead and fell apart in the 10.

!0 rounds ahead of Witherspoon then crumbled in the 11th.

Frank would lose it late.

However majority of his fights never got that far.

Maybe, but I always put Brunos late round problems down to nerves. He seemed unable to proberly relax in the ring and was always very very tense. The man really did seem to carry the weight of hopes of the UK Boxings fans on his broad shoulders.

So after a few rounds of Boxing a combination of nervous energy lose and the build up of lactic(?) acid in those big muscules used to tire the poor guy out.

Also when hurt late on he seemed to mentally freeze and lack natural defence instincts.

I have to go with a more proven Bruno. But I would be nervous If I had money riding because the guy could fold at any moment.

Thats exactly what I mean.

Frank could blow away most ppl in the early rounds. But he lost his nerve and his confidence went out the window when the fight went beyond 8 rounds and then he could get caught.

As for his build, it let him down in the first Tyson fight. Look at Mikes eyes after that uppercut in the first round, Mike is all over the place but Frank is too big and clumsy to move back and catch Mike with that final punch. No he catches him and they clinch, giving Mike the time to clear his head enough to survive the round.

I never did advocate muscle bound fighters as it does slow them down but Frank also had problems with nerves & confidence.
