You are dreaming if you think he will have anywhere near 6 fights in the next 18 months. I'd guess 3 or 4 maximum. His last 6 fights is over a 3 year period.Wrists wrote:Your not Jimbo of howitzer league fame by any chance??
does joe skmp on training?
so where from here i think
sep 9th joe v pemberton/markuson/magee
jan/feb 06 v lacy
apr/may 06 v erdei/somebody solid at 175
jun/jul 06 v woods
sep/oct 06 v tarver/jones
jan 06 v froch hopefully just to shout this loser up
thoughts??
that would be pretty much ok for me although 6 fights in 18 months is against what joe normally does but sya he did these fights would everyone agree that this schedule was fair enough and would answer a lot of critics
calzaghe v mundine
Excellent post, sums it all up perfectly.jamesmcdonnell wrote:give over mate. Tarver and Hopkins don't need Calzaghe, they already have reputations. It's Calzaghe who has been harping on year after year about a defining fight, then pulling out. He turned down Kessler because 'nobody knows who he is outside of Denmark' except the sanctioning bodies of course, who've given him a belt.
Then Calzaghe tells us he's sorry he's missed to many opportunities because of fear of flying, and next thing he's in Vegas sitting ringside.
Then Johnson offers to come and fight on Joe's turf. He twice pulled out of the Johnson bout, which represented a genuine chance of a real belt and big name recognition and a possible shot at Jones Jr. Now he's missed the boat.
Calzaghe used to be one of my favourite fighters, but I've become bored of the endless talk interspersed with meaningless mandatory defences of his WBO belt. Whilst Calzaghe has been fighting the Veit's, Pudwill's and Salem's of this world, Hopkins has beaten Trinidad, DLH, Eastman and taken on the best of the young pretenders in Taylor. Tarver has fought Johnson twice and Jones, Johnson has fought Tarver twice and Jones.
You seriously think the onus is on any of these guys to shut Joe's mouth?
There's no need to, because these days, when Joe shouts, nobody listens.
Whether or not he would beat Mundine, who knows, Mundine is better than anyone Joe has beaten since Brewer, but Calzahe is more experienced and on paper at least better. It's not really the point, because like every other fight mentioned alongside Calzaghe's name, it probably will never happen.
Calzaghe is probably still the best SM in the world, but he certainly hasn't gone out of his way to prove it.
Let's see what happens if Lacy gets by Reid, call me a cynic, but what the chances of Calzaghe finding a way around that one too?

Joes past his best imo (if there was a best) and his punch technique is looking more and more slappy especially against Veit (maybe he was seeing if he could ko Veit with a slap). I say Kessler hits harder because his punches are technially superior.mickeybeard wrote:That's debatable. Who has Kessler stopped that Calzaghe wouldn't have?Phenomenal-Nutrition wrote:Kessler hits harder than Calazage and couldn't put him away. So slapping won't ko him. Mundine was a novice when Otke ko'd him.
While I don't agree that Mundine has a glass jaw, getting dropped by the decent-but-not-murderous punching Nishizawa doesn't suggest a Robin Reid-like chin. Joe's past his best, but he still has enough pop to stop Mundine. Is the same true of Mundine? He's a tidy puncher, and Joe's getting easier to hit, but he's always had a very good chin.
Joe catches up to Mundine late while behind on the scorecards woul be my pick.
I think Mundines speed and skills would cause Joe allot of probs.
I'm pretty tired of Calazage and wish he'd shut-up or fight someone with a pulse or retire.

Probably because Johnson did come here to shut Joes mouth and Joe pulled a sick note on him twice. Hence the name 'sick note'. And they wouldn't get near 3-4million to fight Calazage who even most Brits arent familiar with let alone a fan. Plus joe would insist on getting a large share of the purse.Wrists wrote:Maybe my point was not made clearly enough
of course hopkins and johnson etc have fought better opponents
what i am saying is why if joe is that bad then not just take 3-4 million and knock him out and get rid??
i accept joe needs a fight of substance sooner rather than later but dont cirticise just cos you dont like him
No one cares about Calazage now, not even the fans.

These days Calzaghe leaves himself wide open, and doesn't fight with the same intensity he once did.
Johnson is capable of maintaining a pretty solid workrate, and he held his own twice with tarver who is a lot bigger and harder hitting than Calzaghe.
I don't see Calzaghe stopping Johnson, and he's not beaten anyone at LH at all.
I have doubts about how well Calzaghe would handle a move up in weight, he's not particularly muscular, and doesn't look like he has the frame to bulk himself up. Guys like Tarver probably enter the ring at 185+.

That's a good point, black panther. To get his knockout power Antonio relies on you not seeing it coming. Standing alone it's pretty much a typical mundane clobber. That's the reason he plays possom so much and throws so few punches a round - sure, he's quite old and can't handle a heavy workrate, but the luring in of the opponent is a huge part of his game.black panther wrote:to b fair tarver didnt connect with much more than arm punches in the 2nd fite with johnson nt sure tarver the huge pucher everyone thought he was....... and calzone walks around at 190lbs apparently....
Joe walking around at 190lbs is about normal for a fat super-middle, IMO. Light-heavy's should be around 200lbs before coming down. I saw Tarver shortly after he knocked out Jones and am pretty good at judging weight. He was wearing a tight fitting shirt and was at least 210lbs. If I was betting I'd say between 215-220.
In my opinion, Calzaghe is a natural super-middle (going by his frame, and how long he's been able to make 12st) and all this 'growing out' of the division stuff is simply because he's finding the weight harder to come off as he gets older.
