Thaxton calls out Gomez

At today's press conference to announce Thaxton's first defence of the WBF title against Laszlo Bognar at Norwich City Football club on the 3rd September Thaxton was asked who he would most like to fight, the answer Michael Gomez.

Promoter Neil Featherby said "Once this fight is out of the way we will look at getting Gomez as an opponent, it would be a great fight"

Featherby also sent out an invitation for Gomez to invite the fight as his guest.

The show will take part outdoors and a crowd of around 6,000 is anticipated

Love a good unification.

6,000 is bloody huge.

Thaxton-Gomez would be interesting, although Gomez a strong favourite for me, depending on what he's like if/when he makes his comeback

It will be a cracking fight between Thaxton and Gomez if they could get it on, a reall toe-to-toe war

yeah gomez v thaxton would make a cracking little fight. both fighters have a decent dig and have all action styles, thaxton has come down from lightwelter( were he took ricky hatton the distance, although stopped by maggee) to lightweight and has won his last six fights, five inside the distance so looks to be in good form, but as every one knows after his performance against alex arthur you can not write of a fired up micheal gomez even if he is coming of a lose and moving up a weight! defenatly would be a hard one to call.

I'd tip Thaxton, i'm not convinced that Gomez has that much left, maybe his last fight was down to weightmaking, but it was a bad defeat, Gomez just looked shot that night.

Thaxton has got it right with moving down to lightweight, and seems to have the same strength he had at lightwelter. He's an awkward guy to fight and has good power. I don't see Gomez being able to stop Thaxton quickly , and once the fight goes beyond 3 rounds thaxton will take over and stop Gomez.

Will be exciting whilst it lasts though

excellent anylysis Topper, the fact that Jon ios enjoying an upturn in form since returnging to Lightweight (could he end up being the country's number one in he next year I wonder) and Gomez seems to have gone over that slpoe and on the decline points to a mid late round stoppage for Thaxton to me. However no one tipped GOmez to beat Arthur and we know what happened there so we cant write Gomez off.

good match up lets hope Sky are all over it.

Just spoken to Jon and it's a fight he really wants, he's amazed that Gomez is saying he would knock out any lightweight in the country.

Like he says it's a light-welter vs. a blown up super-feather.

Let's hope that he can come through the Bognar fight unscathed and they can get it on between Thaxton and Gomez

I can't see Bognar causing to many problems for Thaxton, i'd go for a stoppage inside of 6 rounds for John.

Bognar has had several useful results lately, but has been stopped in 8 of his 9 losses

I have never particularly rated Gomez so would side with Thaxton to win, i think Gomez is seriously shot, he dragged up everything to beat Arthur and has since become a hype machine angling for a big money rematch with Arthur hence why he turns up ringside for every Arthur fight. Gomez has power and courage but he has no pretentions beyond maybe being a dangerous British level fighter IMO.

I suppose how Thaxton deals with Bognar would give us some kind of form guide as to how he'd deal with Gomez.

To be fair to Gomez though, at the time Bognar stopped him and dropped him twice in the rematch, didn't his training regime consist largely of nights out on the sauce? Then again, even at that stage of his career, I don't remember Gomez looking as bad as he did in his last fight.

Lets see if Gomez's power can travel up before judging what he will be. He just seems intent on making money and less focused on his career. He doesn't seem sure what he is going to do. First its Lightweight, then its Arthur, now its Lightweight again.

He certainly has been hit and hurt on several occasions at Super Feather - he will go early against Murray and probably Thaxton.

He did actually say he would fight Arthur again but not at Super-Feather, he wanted them to go up a few pounds I believe

Assuming Thaxton's injuries continue to hold up I can see him knocking Gomez clean out.

6000!!!! Thaxton is a seriously popular guy in that part of the world.

Yes very popular in Norwich, the atmosphere at the Sports Village was amazing so can't wait for this one
