I don't think i'm getting things out of perspective Ian, i have thought this way about Bunce for a long time. Yeah, there are positives, but that can be said for all posters, we can all have our day in the sun and then come out with half thought out crap. All i am saying is that Bunce is no different to us in that respect, he isn't like listening to the late Reg Guteridge and picking up something new to learn, he just repeats pub opinion on television and that is where his qudos comes from, the fact that he is on tele and radio, not from his knowledge, which is no better than say your good self. I don't think that half a sentance finished with "adios" every month and the odd comment on his show justifies some sort of hallowed place for Bunce on this site.Ian 'Mr' McNeilly wrote:Let's not get this out of perspective, fellas.
Buncey didn't mention BoxRec on his show - it's entirely his choice and it really is no big deal.
As well as the negatives about him quoted, there are positives too, let's not forget.
And no, I'm not being sarky.

he got a reaction, its a negative one..why would he want a negative reaction as he like his ego to be topped up at all times?its not the kind of attention he craves so I do not subscribe to your point that this is what he was looking for..he's gone and done a smigga and cried off like a baby mate.Cardiff-Lad1 wrote:But the issue was surely not going to be discussed anywhere apart from here - if he was not mentioning Boxrec on purpose then he was hoping for a reaction from Boxrec.... Bunce loves being the centre of attention and you have created a thread about him. I think that by not mentioning the site he was probably hoping someone would kick up a fuss and thats exactly what has happened but yours reasons are more than justified, i still think Bunce will be smug about it though! and for the record, i like Bunce. He's not everyones cup of tea but the boxing world would be a duller place without him IMO.......
also..
His piece about Kirkland Laing a few years ago was awful..it was like he was trying to be some mike hammer character

Thanks for clearing that up
Re: Bunce, boxrec, his show
It is new and it is a live show - with more risk - so it is never going to be as polished as Ringside and the old Setanta show wasnt polished either but it worked a treat. Some people use any excuse to lay the boot into Bunce, I don't agree with everything he says - but then does any of us agree with everything that someone says on the sport of boxing?
So, Ismail Syllek got it in the neck the other week, but it wasnt a patch on some of the Chad Dawson or Max Kellerman rants we got on Setanta - but dont act all surprised or annoyed about it - that's his style - it is an entertaining thing (for me at least) listening to a classic Bunce rant
Also, I have noticed that when Bunce used to put up his threads about his radio show etc, it didnt get much comments, so he mainly uses eastside now - which is understandable.

Re: Bunce, boxrec, his show
Some valid points with which i agree and i understand the logic of what you are saying and i'm sure that programmes are often edited to suit a particular audience or gain wider popularity. I'm sure that Reg Gutteridge did repeat himself, don't we all, but my point was that at least i learn't something new from him, where as Bunce offers nothing in that department for me personally. Also, i think that your argument can sometimes be used as an excuse for the likes of Bunce, where he can blame his lack of deep seated knowledge on the way his show has to be presented to gain bigger viewing figures, ie, "I'm keeping quiet because you haven't the intellectual capacity or knowledge to understand my level of discussion". Your analogy can be used for a whole host of different subject matters, where appearance or output overides quality and depth.MachoMan09 wrote:Reg also repeated the same things over and over. There's a fine balance to be struck, for instance: whenever an expert is on the television conducting analysis or giving opinion on my profession, I invariably find myself thinking that the level of depth is extremely shallow. That's because the subject matter is an area in which I have specialised for years; my knowledge and experience is deep. Were the expert to pitch at my level, he would quickly go beyond the capacity of the majority of viewers and it is plausible that it wouldn't be long before even those with an interest in the subject would also be struggling to keep up. At the conclusion of the piece, only a portion of professionals and those with a significant volume of background knowledge would still be listening and able to take away some value added.Quixall wrote:he isn't like listening to the late Reg Guteridge and picking up something new to learn...
The same applies across the board. If a boxing show was pitched at the level of the typical forumite, it may well go above and beyond the level of detail and nuance that the general audience a. wants and b. can understand. The skill for the broadcaster is being able to keep as many people happy as possible.
Another good example is Prof. Brian Cox's Wonders of the Universe shows. Pretty much every layman I have spoken to raves about those programmes and treat them as a genuine learning experience. Pretty much ever physicist I know either scoffs at the simplicity or begrudgingly concedes that as basic as the information is, it is a good way of generating interest in their subject.
ps How are you involved in boxing ? You seem preety confident in your opinions, which isn't a criticism !!

His radio threads used to get a lot of readers, but not necessarily much feedback. It's not like his threads were compleytely ignored by the site. I'm sure people listened to his show on the back of him making a thread.gasman wrote:It is new and it is a live show - with more risk - so it is never going to be as polished as Ringside and the old Setanta show wasnt polished either but it worked a treat. I have been positive about Bunce before. I'm merely reflecting an opinion which has changed over the last few years.
Slap, who thinks they run boxing? We're offering opinions, which is what you are doing. Fair play you think he does a great job, I don't. Doesn't mean its moaning for moaning sake, its an opinion. It's what forums are for.

One moment they are clambering for an off-the-cuff lighthearted show such as this and then when they get it they pick holes.
Granted that is what forums are for but its fairly predictable.
Re: Bunce, boxrec, his show
Used to be a bit of a proponent for Bunce becoming the face of boxing on the commentry side of things, he's a big personality, very 'casual' friendly. I used to try and counter some of the more malicious things posted about him on here, defend the man, back in the Setanta days.
I've definitely picked up on his snubbing of the forum a little since then. That and a few slightly idiotic posts on here, and he can do one for all I care now. The BN show's not a patch on the old one and I really can't be arsed bothering with it.

Bunce fans should need to realise that the thing that distinguishes him as a favourite of them, can be the very same thing that turns another away... When I was pro-Bunce, I certainly understood why many wouldn't be. It's what is annoyingly referred to as 'marmite' in some quarters.

JamesH - what a fantastic post, well said. So glad I'm not the only boxing fan to find Bunce a boring, one trick pony.
Re: Bunce, boxrec, his show
When I've been on ESB previously it had an element of trolling/tackiness/flaming that put me off. I think in general you get a more sensible lot on here.
As for Bunce, he can be a bit wearing at times, when he's on form he's good but sometimes it just grates when he doesn't shut up and let the other people speak. Same can be said for a lot of pundits though!
He defo lost a bit of my respect for the rants at Ian McNeilly on the other threads and his views that 'real fans' would subscribe no matter what, duno where they came from but I never put Buncey down as a 'sing for his supper' type, it's really opened my eyes a bit.
