Marvis Frazier.

Post by KOJOE90 »

Does anyone know the amateur record of Marvis Frazier? I've read that it was 56-2 with one of the loses coming to James Broad.

Does anyone have anymore information? :TU:

He split a pair of bouts with Tony Tubbs. The Tubbs lost was his first, Broad his second and last.

Broad stopped him with a tap to the top of the head. See,s Marvis had a nerve in his neck that was pinched, and caused a sort of paralysis.

Frazier had the nerve operated on, and you can see the scar on the back of his neck in some videos.

He beat Mitch Green on Jun 16, 1980 in Atlanta, in the quarter finals of the Olympic trials. His loss to Broad was in the semi-finals on Jun 19. Time 21 seconds.

So what happened in the final - who would have been the US heavyweight entrant?

Some good wins there - Witherspoon, Bonecrusher, Tubbs, Mitch Green. He did manage to avenge that loss to Broad as a pro as well.

Interestingly by my calculations Smokin Joe was only 16 when Marvis was born - he wasn't hanging about there. Smokin!

Just doing some more calculations and in fact Joe must have been either 15 or just turned 16 when Marvis was conceived - the lad! :TU:

In his bio Frazier bites back at all the critics who said he mismanaged his son as a pro.
Frazier asks them all to show him another heavyweight of that era, outside of Tyson, who made more than 2 million dollars for their first 21 fights.
After Tyson, Marvis was the best paid heavyweight around in the mid 1980s. He was earning more per fight than the alphabet champs in their title fights (remember Tim Witherspoon bringing home 83.000 dollars after KO'ing Frank Bruno in London in '85?)
Mis-matched maybe, not mis-managed.

Yes, Witherspoon blew all his money. Later, in 1991 I think it was, he won a 1 million+ dollar lawsuit over King for the earnings he was stiffed out of in the 80s. Guess what? Ol Tim blew that too in record time.
I remember a journalist went to interview Witherspoon in his home in the mid 1990s. Witherspoon's phone had then been cut off for months because he couldn't afford to pay the bill. In even harder times his electricity had also been cut.
Luckily I understand Tim is doing better finacially these days, enjoying success as a trainer for several ranked fighters.

What's sad is that nearly all those champs from the 80s have to scrape to make a living. Tony Tubbs lives with his mother and still has to take fights for a payday. Greg Page was pretty bad set finacially even before his tragedy. I can only assume he is even worse off now after all those medical bills. Trevor Berbick is poor. Carl Williams works or at least worked as a security guard at Ground Zero.
Tony Tucker and Pinklon Thomas are OK, so is Tyson as long as his name has some value. But a troubling number of ex-chams and contenders are poor. Worst off may be Iran Barkley, who lives with his mother in a cramped appartment in Bronx, NY.

Was his win over Green unanimous or split?

Why didn't Marvis fight in the 1979 National AAU tournament?
