How much would you guess Sky paid for boxing rights in the Bruno era compared to 2012? If Sky paid what it did then, or even close, BoxN would not exist. But Sky has squeezed boxing for years.

In the early days of sky boxing got the viewers so they paid money now it does not! Even when Setanta were paying more for fights it still did not get the viewing figures. Have the general sports fan lost interest in the sport.

Crunch time for allegedly

Post by dalcumly »

Well this it . We've enjoyed not paying extra for allegedly ,we've seen some great fights ,got to know more about Steve Bunce ,and he's not a bad chap ( but everytime he starts speaking I knock my coffee over and my hands start to shake-can anyone explain that ?) but its decision time .

I hope it does well because we all want to be able to see more boxing , but for me the wallets empty . Boxing News , Boxing Monthly , TV licence , SKY subscriptions , ESPN subscriptions I have to draw the line somewhere .
I was told recently that on average SKY SPORTS boxing programmes get between 70,000 and 100,000 viewers . I have no idea if this is true , but the guy who told me seemed to think so . Can allegedly get some of these viewers on a regular basis ? They will get some but not them all ,and I think they NEED them all .
I'm only one individual but I will never again , on a point of principle , pay for PPV , so I'm not going to shell out ANOTHER £10 a month for ANY boxing coverage , unless SKY SPORTS throw in the towel as far as boxing goes .
So , can SKY SPORTS confirm to us they are going to last the course ?

Boxing figures on page 9 of thread. I don't think it will get the same number of viewers as sky due to that figure including casual boxing fans who will not pay a £10 a month.

And now this channel will take the sport even further away. I have said before that I happy to able to watch a lot more boxing but this is really really bad for the long term future of the sport and IMO is a bad move.

I have always been a fan of Bunce but surely IMO even he can see (when not wearing his paymasters hat) that this channel is a huge blow for the sport as this country's biggest promoter fights will only be seen by a hand full of fans
Both BIG MARK and Macho have summed up perfectly what I feel about this sorry episode. It's not about 'hating' on Warren, its what he has knowingly done to the sport, (though admittedly he is not the only one, there are others), without giving a s*** about it. All in the name of making money. Boxing and money have always been interlinked, but along with that was forsight, to keep it going in order to keep the money coming in. This type of move reeks of desperation, of squeezing every last penny out of the sport before bailing.

Watching the sport go from an 'Event', with millions and millions of viewers to a few hundred thousand and now to even less than that, does not fill me with optimism.

PS Did anyone hear Buncey, last night. telling people not to harass him in a week or two about subscriptions and to 'get it sorted now'. Don't blame him for that, to be honest. Also heard him mention ESB boards and their scoring on last nights cards, we had scoring on the fights too. Didn't get a look in :D Not that bothered, genuinely but impartiality and a 'fair crack of the whip' seems to have gone out the window.

Are the subs not at the levels they were expecting? Or was it just a bit of a plug to get things going. Found it interesting, nonetheless.

I was thinking about paying if it was available on the internet but from what I here that might take a while. Also I was only going to pay on a month by month basis to avoid the shitter weeks which is bound to happen but apparently you need a minimum of 6month sign up. The channel has been pretty good so far but I aint a fan of Allegedly gettin his fighters to vacate titles just so he can save shows, Bellew with the light heavyweight title and now Groves supposedly giving up his Commonwealth super-middleweight title.

Who going to fight for Groves title? Rocky Fielding is it?

That's not exactly anything new. Jamie Moore and a host of fighters gave up titles to save Sky shows.

For me, I get to watch a lot of boxing that I wouldn't have otherwise seen, like last night. It means more shows happening in Britain, boxers being more active and having more chance of building press interest or support. It will be interesting also if allegedly get some kind of terrestrial TV tie-up, maybe some kind of weekly magazine show like KOTV, to build the profile.

As for the guy saying he has ESPN and draw the line - well, you don't get ESPN for boxing. Their refusal to show boxing has been very sad.

apart from a few fights on dec 3, december is a washout with shit bills like the degale one. i am not paying a tenner to watch him beat Miasisalwais Ondicanvus from Vilnius. there are other ways to watch the fights on dec 3. and the 6 month tie in - smacks of not being confident that their product will keep subscribers happy.

There are many factors that have contributed to the current state of boxing. Dreadful, over-protective match-making leading to awful mismatc fights was the biggest factor of all, in my humble opinion. I don't think Sky were to blame for this; and perhaps if they hadn't been rubbish then they'd have remained a bit freer with their chequebook.

I agree that anything that keeps fighters busy and increases the number of fights on tv MUST be a good thing. I hope it works but i am dubious for reasons that i wont go into again.

Lets not pretend November has been great either, only 1 show in the entire month has actually stood out. They need to realise they aren't going to get subscribers if they are only showing 1 or 2 good cards ...and are picking up cards from the US at 2AM, only hardcore fans will bother staying up. They need to do all they can to make deals with promoters in Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland and even Turkey (Oner) to get primetime shows. I saw that Premier had Aydin v Jo Jo Dan and that was the perfect sort of show to pick up to fill the schedule and likely to be relatively cheap.

It'd be great if they got stuff from Japan or Australia as well and then they won't have Lillis saying things like "We never see those Japanese fighters like Nishioka until they come over and school Marquez" as we'll get to see them on UK TV (rather than streaming).

I seem to remember there's some sort of ban on Boxing News articles but hopefully this one will be allowed as it has a bit of actual concrete insight to things, rather than speculation from the punters and silence from the company:

Nah, they aren't banned Oliver...they're allowed two links a week to their own stuff, same as others...

Interesting piece.

Anyone got any idea how the 6 months for the price of 5 for Sky customers works? Do I get December free? Or maybe May 2012? It's not very clear.

I have, however, signed up. So long as you've got all of your details in front of you, it's pretty straight forward, but I can see a number of people being put off by having to set up a Paywizard account (in effect another Paypal type of service).

Ts and Cs state a minimum 6 month contract after which it automatically becomes a monthly rolling contract (which is a lot better than an automatic 6 month contract).

So your having to commit to 6 months without knowing the schedule. Lucklily its month by month from word go on Virgin. Don't see how this is going to get the numbers required to make it work.

If it starts falling apart after Jan / Feb, I'll just cancel my payment and let them chase me for their £10. If I'm in that position (ie that I want to cancel), allegedly will have more pressing concerns than recouping my £10!
