My God, who are you then? Have we met? Sounds as though you must have been there in the very early days at Notting Hill Gate, before I arrived. Steve and Tony had gone by the time I joined the company to work on Boxing Weekly. George was editor of BM and the Update at the point BW folded and I was kept on to work on BM and BMU. George went on to become editor of BO (and boy did we take those initals literally, the way that mob had dumped us!). That said, genuinely like George always have - great to see him at Wembley the other week. Crawshaw was my boss, he didn't have a clue about boxing, but knew enough to fire me as advertising manager, as I was useless at it ( boxing is a nightmare to sell to advertisers - I was fired over a full page Sky ad pulling out at last minute, while I was on holiday) and I worked alongside the Connolly brothers, Steve and Tony, ex Boxing News men and great to work with, plus George Zelaney, who I think edited outlook (?) and good old Barry Hugman.
Graham Houston was a total legend for his American Scene in Boxing News, which was must read stuff. Hugman and Crawshaw managed to persuade him to join BW and BM though, which was a major coup. When the BM/Outlook split happened, Crawshaw managed to persuade him to stay with BM and to come back to Britain and edit it. Myself and Chris Bryans kept the pot boiling until Graham arrived, which is the start of what I view as the BM of today - a bit of Graham, a bit of me. I can't overstate how important Graham has been to the mag and to my career, fantastic pro to learn from and a great writer.
